Re: [ubuntu-uk] Joggler as a File server

2010-08-19 Thread Kenny Coyle
Hi Cornelius!

To confirm, do you know if smbd is running or not on your joggler?

You can test this by using the commands:

sudo /etc/init.d/smbd stop
sudo /etc/init.d/smbd start

The first one will fail if you don't have it running in the first place.

If the second command fails, there will likely be an issue with you
samba configuration...

Best,

K.

 Hi all
I have my Joggler up and running for some time now, but looks like it freeze
at lease once a day and sometimes does not reboot very well (when the O2
logo comes up before Ubuntu then this O2 logo look a bit fuzzy and this is
usually a sign it will not go further with the boot.) However this is not my
 concern at this stage,

WHAT I am looking for this time is to know how to setup a File server on it,
 1. I have a powered external USB drive attached
 2. I have tried making use of GSamba that comes installed on the Joggler
 image
 3. Installed SWAT but could not point my Firefox to it, did not startup
 4. Tried the Samba config tool also.
 5. I tried to hit (from an ubuntu PC) the IP address of the joggler and can
ping it but connecting to a Windows Share returned smb://. could not
 be found/connect

 Any ideads

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Viral Videos - Who's actually interested?....Just another thought....

2010-02-03 Thread Kenny Coyle
As odd as it may be, i've already had troubles with attempted malicious
activity on machines that I administer with Ubuntu.

Luckily, the user management and kernel-mode support of linux itself helps a
_lot_

But at the same time, I think that now is the time to be creating such
counter measures...

On 3 February 2010 21:47, John Matthews jake...@sky.com wrote:

Has anybody thought about safety measures, when Ubuntu does take off. I
would have thought that when those who like to make these viruses, when
they notice Ubuntu is getting more and more used, they might target
Ubuntu. It wouldnt be difficult, but my guess would be it would be far
more difficult getting a virus guard sorted for Ubuntu.

 How would that work out?

 John.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Add a hard drive

2010-01-07 Thread Kenny Coyle
It will be detected, you will simply need to map it to a location using
fstab (or mount it to a location manually using mount).

You will likely also have to partition the drive, you can use a command line
tool like cfdisk or a gui based tool like gparted to do this for you...

Quick question guys...If i install a hard drive on to my Ubuntu pc will it
be detected and useable or will i need to reinstall Ubuntu?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Virtual private server recomendations

2009-11-26 Thread Kenny Coyle
I would recomend tagadab vps hosting. I've been using several of their
smaller packages for almost a year now and haven't had the slightest of
trouble. Their support staff over the phone are also very helpfull.

http://www.tagadab.com/virtual-private-servers

It looks like their VS1000 package would suit you very nicely, it comes in
at £39.99, but it might be an idea to try out one of their smaller packages
first to see if they suit.

I'm starting to look at the possibility of gettting a hosted virtual
private server for a project I'm working on. I've been doing the usual
googling and the only thing I can say for sure is that it's a mine field
of options, from expensive to cheap and back again.

Ideally the server will have around 1gig of ram, 30 gig of disk space, a
nice fat pipe the conect it to the web, a static IP and run Linux (I'm
prefer Ubuntu but open to others)

I wondered if the leaner'd members of this list might have any suggestions?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] insurance for meetings

2009-10-05 Thread Kenny Coyle
Hmm, that is quite an interesting question, something that i've never really
considered in relation to a LUG...
I'm guessing that if it's just a normal LUG then the venue might be able to
help with health and safety considerations. For anything more like an
install day, a disclaimer might help (although, ensuring that it is legally
binding is an entirely different matter).

What are peoples experience with any requirements for personal liability
insurance for things like lug events, or install days.

I remember at our first lug meet at exeter uni. back around year
2000,.we just got people to sign a disclaimer,

Just wondered, it may help dclug members when organising things like
 install days.

I think most people have just been a little bit busy of late :) been a
while since a new ubuntu has come out so things quiet down before the
 storm too ;)
Of course the best way to get people talking is to start a conversation!
find an interesting bit of ubuntu news relating to the uk (or not) post
it and see what people think, have an idea about some sort of event,
post it and see if anyone is interested :)

I'm not sure what the plans are for release party's next month but It
would be interesting to get things going on that front too
