Add/remove programs has gone completely blank. "No application found". Synaptic
has no problem. I'm running 9.04.
Can anyone help? Paul

Matt

I'm not sure it's your problem.

When I open your mail on Thunderbird it's all fine...

It's just this p*ss-poor excuse of an email client that is Wondiws Levi
Mial.

Thanks for the explanation anyway.

[ubuntu-uk] E-mail body as attachment

2009-06-01 Thread Steve Archer
Why is it that when some people send an e-mail to the list I receive the
e-mail with no body, but it is instead an attachment?

It's driving me nuts...

Re: [ubuntu-uk] ubuntu and wireless routers

2009-05-22 Thread Steve Archer
Hi Norman

The router in itself should not be relevant to the OS you are using.

What is however is the wireless adapter you are using.

If you are not going to be changing that then you have no worries.

If however you go for one of these OTT new-fangled "N" routers it's likely
you'll need to change your wireless adapter and then there could be driver
issues.

Just think about the bandwidth on your internet connection and if you are
streaming stuff wirelessly round your home. If not you can get away with
"G"...

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Steve

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Routers and printers

2009-05-09 Thread Steve Archer
Hi Rik

Most routers, both wired and wireless, are pretty much standard models
that you can buy in the shop.

The emphasis being on the word "standard" - if you have some
fancy-fandangle adapter running an uncertified wifi standard to squeeze
some more speed out of the connection (supposedly) then its likely
you'll want a compatible router. Which on the whole wouldn't be a router
issued by an ISP.

My advice, if they're giving it away free then give it a go - likely its
pre-configured and ready to rock-n-roll.

If you want a bit more out of your wireless, like you're streaming media
throughout your house and several devices then do some research and get
the most appropriate router for your needs - be prepared to give your
wallet a severe bashing.

And remember, chances are your internet connection is less then 20meg,
and 802.11g is supposed to be 54meg, so there's really no need to go for
an all-singing all-dancing super-fast wireless router just for browsing
the net.

One caveat to this. If you are running services behind your routers,
like web hosting, and you want additional control and security then you
might want to look at a more funtional router.

As for your printer, I concur with Harry's comments.

Cheers, Steve

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Announcement: Manchester Release Party

2009-04-23 Thread Steve Archer
Hey all

I've replaced the Dell'd Ubuntu (8.04) on my Mini9 with the Jaunty netbook
remix beta and it's great.

I've not had any noticeable issues with battery life or anything.

It's awesome as far as I'm concerned!
