Dear Norman

I am not a maestro, but you can use the back up facility, which will
save everything on Evolution. The format of the files are mbox, which
means they are not readable by a text editor.

I would only give you duff a explanation so do read the help pages and
you can see the backup and restore items in the File menu item.

Dear Avi

You are quite right. I believe that the upshot of this rather lengthy
thread is that I should have gone to Specsavers.

However, one great advantage of using the commands in the terminal is
that everyone does or should know exactly what they do, whereas if one
gets into a stew with Synaptic and the Software Centre, one is very
dependent on the good offices of people of a charitable disposition such
as yourself.

Many thanks for your response

You are right I was logged in as a non-sudo user. However, I managed to
get it to work in that user by authenticating as a sudo user. I don't
believe this is how 11.10 worked. If you tried to authenticate as a sudo
user in a non-sudo user then things did not happen. Maybe this is a
change in 12.10

Found at long last. In addition the Apply button did come up. Maybe I

Many thanks Liam

I always did prefer Dos to Windows and I am finding I prefer the
terminal emulator to the graphical interface, largely because everything
stays the same and you know exactly the outcome of typing a command.
Secretly I like programming, but hate tinkering with the innards of a
machine

However, thanks for all your efforts. In future I shall try to
reciprocate

On opening it whether by clicking on the icon or running it as a

difficulty, but the button is still greyed out.

Thank you for your contribution. However, for some reason it does not
seem to appear in my version of the Software Centre and I find that
strange as I have two separate desktops.

More to the point I cannot find much of interest in either of my
Software Centres, only toys - certainly nothing to do with either java
development or Postgresql.

However, sorry for the moans, but many thanks.

Thank you Rowan. I have managed to download Synaptic through apt-get,
but for some reason I cannot seem to use the Apply button as it has been

Perhaps I should have downloaded a text only version of Debian.
