Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu spotting

2008-02-26 Thread whoredom
I have had a few spottings, of which I have photographic evidence (though
not to hand).

The first was a internet cafe in Palmers Green (North London) which had all
but one computer running Debian with KDE in some sort of custom
distribution. They were using some KDE app to manage the ID numbers
customers were given that would keep track of how long they had left.

The second was quite recent - in the Maplin electronics store just beside
Oxford Circus (London) their computer upstairs was running Fedora Core 8.

While wandering down one of the corridors near my lab the other day, one
of the lab doors was open, revealing a monitor with the Ubuntu login
screen peering out into the world. It made me smile at least. Quite a
while ago we were giving our end of 1st year presentations and one guy
plugged his laptop into the projector to reveal an ubuntu desktop. (If
only I could get my dual monitor set up working smoothly...)

 Points
  are awarded for spotting:-

  * Machines running Ubuntu
  * Articles about Ubuntu in mainstream press
  * Official Ubuntu shipit CDs
  * Overhearing people talking about Ubuntu
  * Spotting references to Ubuntu on other peoples computers
  * (suggestions?)

Of course points can only be awarded if you happened upon these things,

I had one of these today..

I got called into a workshop style meeting at $work where a
 representative
from $large_software_vendor came in to talk about their
 $fantastic_product.
He put up his laptop PC on the projector and in amongst the mess of
 icons on
his Windows XP desktop I spotted an Ubuntu ISO image.

Probably not worth many points in this game, but still, a spot is a
 spot!

  Have you spotted today?

  Cheers,
  Al.

Can we get half-points for general linux spots? I've seen an eee around
uni somewhere, not sure if it was just running xandros or not.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Server, oidentd and eggdrops

2008-02-02 Thread whoredom
Hey,
I have been trying to get an identd daemon running on my Ubuntu Server so
they can identify with IRC servers (some of which require it to connect). I
run a miau IRC bouncer and some eggdrops, each with their own account. I
tried out oidentd as it gets mentioned a lot in the threads I have seen, but
installation, running and configuration has not seen any results.

Has anyone got any tips? Or managed to get it running themselves? I hear
there are issues with identd because I use a router that includes a firewall
(the port is forwarded to the correct machine). Is spoofing an option? How
do I spoof?

Many thanks

Re: [ubuntu-uk] External drive is stuck at read-only.

2008-01-28 Thread whoredom
If it's a FreeAgent this may be of some help:

If not, have a look at any /etc/fstab entry it may have.

All was going well, fdisk, mkfs, etc. and I moved a
couple of Gb of files to it.

After I disconnected it and plugged it back into my
machine it suddenly decided to be a read-only file
system. I remember a pen-drive of mine doing the
same thing and I ended up having to redo the mkfs to
cure it. This isn't a problem with a 512Mb pen
drive but with a 500Gb drive with over 100Gb of files
already on there it's not really an option.

Any other answers? I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 (Gnome).

This could be to do with unmounting. Did you unmount the drives properly
 before disconnecting them?
Right click; Unmount device or Eject.
