There is a bug in gnome that means that xmodmap-gb (and it's variants) are not right (Ubuntu Bug https://launchpad.net/products/gnome-applets/+bug/50845 and upstream gnome bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345804 ). I've switched my keyboard to US and it now works fine, including a problem I was having with AIGLX/Beryl. I may tinker with the US format to change what I think needs to be changed ( the @ sign, speech marks, stirling sign etc) for the time being until the bug is resolved -- Steve Garton http://www.sheepeatingtaz.co.uk -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

After trying to change the keyboard settings, on boot it says that xkbd (or something, I'm not on the laptop atm) has encountered an error. It also gives some commands to issue to post the output for bugtrackers et al. I have some spare time tonight, so I will sit down and work through it then. To answer Ashley's question, yes it is the internal keyboard. -- Steve Garton http://www.sheepeatingtaz.co.uk -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

Stephen, are you using the inbuilt keyboard, or an external keyboard? It seems this is a general problem with Edgy on laptops, as I had the same issue on my Toshiba Portege (with an external keyboard - haven't tried the internal kb yet). From memory, I had to add a couple of xmodmap statements to /etc/profile. -- "We do not inherit the earthhttp://backtobreath.com/ from our ancestors; ...--__@ we borrow it from our children" --- _\<,_ -- Antoine de St. Exupery (_) (_) Reg. user: Linux #390621 Ubuntu #7291 ___ All new Yahoo! Yes, the number 3 does work. The other interesting thing is if I run onScreen, when the visual shift key is pressed, the other numbers all change to theire respective characters, but not the 3. It is almost as if the £ sign is not bound to the number 3. > if your running edgy from live cd one of the faults is that it is > stuck in US keyboard mode. Try changing your keyboard layout in system/preferences/keyboard does number 3 work if it does then there is no reason why shift 3 shouldn't. if your running edgy from live cd one of the faults is that it is stuck in US keyboard mode. Not sure about cap lock though, Sorry. Something else you could try for the whole caps lock thing is to press it on the log in page you should get a message above where you input your name and password that says Caps Lock Is On in red should let you know if it is working. -- Seek That Thy Might Know -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Acer Laptop Keyboard Config
Good Morning All, I've just noticed that on my Acer Aspire 5601 laptop the £ (as in shift and 3) and capslocks keys do not 'work' in Edgy. Can anyone suggest a) any work around and b) which package I could file a bug against. Please let me know any commands I can issue that will help diagnose what is wrong, and why would not be reconised. In dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg I selected gb and PC105 layouts, the same as I have on my desktop, where the keys seem to work just fine.
