John -- John Levin http://www.technolalia.org/blog/ -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.org/UKTeam/ Yes, it isn't as good as the EEE. The whole thing feels very cheap and plasticky. The one I tried had a tweaked ubuntu, with access to most of the things in the settings menu removed. It had Wine and Virtualbox installed, although I think that virtualisation would be too demanding for the slothful via Processor. Still waiting to see if the Ubuntu ones go online at some point. Can't imagine them being terribly popular, of the two free laptops on the Carphone Warehouse site they are the worst spec, slower CPU, half the RAM and no Optical Drive. Also only has one option for 3G at the moment (Orange) where as the free Vista Laptop has a choice of 5 providers. The XP version on the web is currently £249 to buy standalone, will be interesting to see if this remains the same when it becomes Ubuntu. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Carphone Warehouse offer Ubuntu
I *think* the Ubuntu one was £219, but I wasn't looking that closely. I was waiting for my top up for the EEE's three modem and thought 'ooh, Ubuntu!' John Levin wrote: http://www.theopensourcerer.com/2008/07/24/say-hello/ Anyone played with one of these? John Nope, looks interesting though. I wouldn't be surprised if they sell a few of them. I wonder if it's worth the Ubuntu-UK community contacting Carphone Warehouse. I'm sure pointing new users to the Ubuntu-UK web site/wiki/mailing list would be helpful. I didn't see any price on them though when purchasing outright. Rob -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.org/UKTeam/
