Re: [ubuntu-uk] Chromebook Acer C7 - Ubuntu??

Here's a chap who's been tinkering with Ubuntu on Chromebooks:
http://chromeos-cr48.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/chrubuntu-1204-now-with-double-bits.html

He hasn't tried it on the new Acer but thinks the above instructions should
work. He's also got a rough guide for the ARM Chromebook.

AIUI at the moment you must use the ChromeOS kernel with Ubuntu's
userland and some things don't work.

TBH I don't really see the point of x86 Chromebooks. Why not just have
a cheap laptop? But the ARM ones really appeal. Cool running, no
heatsinks or vents to clog with dust, no whining fans, and twice the
battery life from a small, thin, light unit. I'll give up a bit of
compatibility and performance for that!

The first question I asked when I saw them. It's a Intel Core processor
(non-specified) but I did wonder whether they're EFI booted and signed only
to ChromeOS, which is ultimately Linux, and was originally an Ubuntu
variant but with a shell that's based on Chrome. I can't imagine there will
be long between the first ones going out and someone putting a 12.10 USB
drive in one.

Being EFI based is not a problem.

and signed only to ChromeOS,

They usually have a developer switch under the battery which lets you
monkey around with the software install.

Its a 1.1 GHz Intel Celeron 847 Sandy Bridge processor. Anyone got any
thoughts on how well it would run Ubuntu.
