As an old newbie to linux (76 ish) I prefer mailing lists usenet to Web Forums (sorry if the terminology is wrong) I'm sure you know what I mean. As a long time Windows/DOS user I still find linux difficult. I've been using some of my essential programs for over 10 years, Quicken (finance) and Sidekick (contacts) (amongst others) I've tried to use wine and vmware to run these programs using linux but for me it's too difficult and not worth the effort.
