I am not entirely sure they exist in the mainstream kernel.

I don't believe at all that this is the end of the linux client! Microsoft
are a huge concern who are out to make money. I believe they see there own
failings in the VOIP world and like most other companies where technology is
short they buy in from outside.

I see this as a positive step and coming from me a MAC and Linux user and a
prominent hater of the beast that is Microsoft says a lot.

Develop the product make it more open thats the way forward!

Skype as you all know is just one of the many VOIP/SIP providers out there
this just means it will make the competition work harder and show what is
possible with free software.

Skype is $600+ million in debt and and last year lost $7m more. I
wouldn't call that profitable.

Even though it works reasonably well, Linux Skype client is lagging
Windows and hardly gets regular updates. An MS ownership will
definitely be the last nail in the coffin.

Ridiculous. Skype's ability to pierce all forms of NAT and firewall puts
it miles ahead of MSN.

Because publicly-traded companies don't do that to profitable companies
with valuable technology. It doesn't increase shareholder value.

It's easy to assume everything MS does is evil, and specifically bad for
Linux users. They are no friend of ours, clearly, but that doesn't
translate to making bad business decisions out of spite.

Because "Skype" is approximately synonymous with "VoIP" to most people -
there's no sense getting rid of all that good brand at all, especially
now it's not even a competitor.

I cant see why. If they mess around with the protocol then all they would
do is start to loose many paying customers for Skype that use Linux. As
Microsoft look to do more things on the web they have been making them more
friendly to systems other than their own.

If they do something to restrict users then they will have less customers
and something else may be adopted as a Skype replacement.

Thank you
