If it is this article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/dec/01/facebook.socialnetworking) you are referring to, it doesn't say that Facebook have pulled Beacon, only modified it to stop posting purchasing information publically. It sounds like they still use the system with the same basic deal with their advertisers. The Guardian Technology section today has a heavily negative piece about Facebook and personal data and advertising related stuff, and also how it seems impossible to close your account.
