What is it that is telling you it needs 201MB? Can you take a screenshot of
it, or if it is textual put it on the pastebin?

I had the same issue, seems like the upgrade is smart and discounts any
space it'll need for packages, so while you have 1gb free, it'll
probably use 500ish for packages. My solution was to download the alt cd
and upgrade from that.

I have tried upgrading but I get an error about lack of space in some
temporary directory on /var

When I go to that directory and do a "df ." I am told I have approx. 1GB
free, yet the error refers to 340MB or something similar.

What's going on?

Exactly. It seems likely that I goot a little lost in all the noise in
the release thread and the delay hit a few days ago, not on the 19th -
which was the way I read it. It did seem a little rash to spot a bug and
release the final version complete with fix on the same day! I shall
chalk it up as another reason I don't like forums ;)

Yes, this machine does seem a little on the nasty side. It isn't that
new, and has an Athlon from before they days when everything moved to
the supposed equivalent clock rate rather than the actual one - at least
an actual clock speed was an accurate piece of information, even if it
was totally useless for comparing performace, lies, damn lies and
statistics ;)

I haven't tried Linux on it since I upgraded the RAM to 768M, but when
it was at 512M I tried loading Ubuntu (6.06) on it and if I hadn't been
sidetracked into something else I'd have given up and put it down to a
crash or something. As it was it took around 20 minutes to load to a
working machine (and find out that Frozen Bubble isn't on there by
default so my son couldn't play it!).

That said, Windows XP runs on it like a dog too. I generally walk away
and leave it for about 5 minutes after logging on so it can get itself
sorted out and ready to use. The most annoying thing is the wireless
card which can take serveral manual attempts to get connected to the
network (it's a USR one, and I think USR have had their day in terms of
hardware quality - they made nice analogue modems in the early days but
haven't managed to move on since then).

I've run diagnostics on every part of the machine I can though, and not
one shows up a hardware fault. All the drivers are at their latest
versions too. I often wonder whether it is down to the extra software
required to keep the machine secure, but even that shouldn't have this
much impact on it - it isn't as if I daft enough to use Norton on it!

My PII-700 laptop with 512M runs Win2k nicely (well, as nicely as you
can run Windows), and is quite happy with Ubuntu (6.10) bar the lack of
any wireless network connectivity. It will be intersting to see how 7.04
goes onto the Athlon machine. I'm half tempted to give Xubuntu a try -
it had a nice bit of coverage in the Guardian yesterday (Linux for
Grannies!), and I do use XFCE myself in preference to Gnome or KDE
anyway.

Yes, I'd expect the actual iso files, etc. to be ready a day or so
before release to give time to get everything in place. My main
confusion was that I'd read on the Ubuntu forum somewhere that there was
a last minute bug found and everyone was waiting for it to be fixed (I
have in mind a kernel bug related to ATA cards or something, but it is
late and I've had a long day). I've lost the tab, and can't really be
bothered to search through the forum thread to find the reference now -
firstly it is too late, secondly there was rather too much noise on the
thread for me, more like a bunch of teenage girls waiting for the latest
Take That single than geeks waiting for a code release!.

Anyway, I have the iso, so little lost in giving it a go tomorrow. It'll
be a clean install next to an existing Windows XP install (I have the
alternate CD). With any luck I'll have a usable Ubuntu system this time,
although the particular machine hasn't had too much luck with the live
CD so far - painfully slow even with 512M RAM on a 1.2GHz (real speed)
Athlon; I have an extra 256M in there now, but lack the right size DIMMs
to go any higher :(

One day I'll get the time to fix my laptop install. It killed my Win2k
install (largely my fault when I created space, I think the partition
labeling for Win2k has changed so I need to repair the install). The
networking also doesn't work, largely down to lack of decent Linux WiFi
driver support. The native driver for my first card doesn't appear to
support WAP (which I am committed to using on several networks), it also
seems that there is a known incompatiblity with this card and the router
I'm using (although that should just be down to naff Windows drivers and
the firmware since the fix is to upgrade both - which I have done, but
to even more recent versions than those that have the fix; so the bug
must have crept back in). The second card I have to use doesn't have any
native Linux drivers. So far I haven't bothered to jump through the
necesary hoops to get the thing working!

Anyhoo, I'm now touch typing wiht my eyes closed, so I'd better stop
before my fingers get out of sync and this all starts getting to be
a mess!!

Given a few more months I may yet become a Ubuntu convert - it isn't for
lack of trying. I just keep finding that tailoring Debian to my tastes
takes less time than tailoring Ubuntu. Ubuntu I install for other people
;)

I installed Feisty 4 days ago and have not received any updates
therefore the final version must have been released about 5 days ago.

The problems with installing is due to heavy demand on the servers.

I'm sure your iso files are fine.

OK, I have to say I'm a little confused at todays faltering release. The
post you quote is from around 15:18, and there has been chatter all over
the place about the last minute delays in release. However...

I started downloading shortly before lunch, and on refreshing nothing
changed (in terms of date/time stamps on the .iso images, jigdo, etc.)
from when I originally loaded the pagea mid morning. I have just
checked the md5sums on the iso I've downloaded and they match the
website as it is now. I also note that the iso is timestamped with 14:44
on the 15th.

So given that it is now the 20th and the timestamp on the file is from 5
days ago, what has changed to allow the release? I read that it was a
bug that delayed things, but the timestamps on all the files, bar the
jigdo and torrent files in most cases, are a few days old. Does this
mean that the .iso files aren't fixed yet and should be avoided?

You are absolutely right! I hadn't seen that before. Is it an Edgy feature?

I was thinking the OP thought you would get the same notification of
updates like you do for security updates, which I don't think you do.

On Edgy If you go into System > Administration > Update Manager it says
"your system is up to date" but it also tells you that a version is
available and there is a button to click on to perform the upgrade.

This is the recommended method on the upgrade instructions at:

I'm not sure you will be offered an update to Feisty from Edgy. You have
to do something specific to go from one release to another. You will
continue to get security updates to Edgy for about another 12 months.

atm = at the moment
the main ubuntu mirrors are under a lot of strain with all the people
upgrading/downloading feisty, so another mirror may let you upgrade.
And, like I said, the "automatic upgrade" is already out.

You should be receiving the notice of a new version now.
(tho you may want to change to some other mirrors as the ubuntu servers
are being slapped about atm)

Why should I want to change to 'some other mirrors' ? Wot's atm ? My
Ubuntu seems to be working alright although having some minor problems with
OOo Draw. I presume that unless I have good reason not to, I just wait for
automatic update, and follow the instructions as usual ?

You should be offered to update once your update manager has "refreshed".

"officially" released and you should be able to grab images, update

Wouldn't it be better for us thickies to wait until we are offered an
automatic update in the usual way ?

I imagine it will be duplicated across the lists but for those on this
list not following the Announce list you may want to know its currently
"officially" released and you should be able to grab images, update
installations and generally update your Ubuntu urges right now.
