I've tried two older kernels, and the problem persisted on both, so
presumably it wasn't that causing it. :(

But at least I know how to access GRUB2 now. :)

Just done this myself recently, It appears that by default, grub2 will
not display the menu on single os computers. To permanently reveal the
grub2 menu at boot time you have to edit /etc/default/grub as root,
and comment out the line "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0", then run
update-grub. On the next reboot you should see the grub menu again.
Lots of details on grub2 are in [1] below - search for
"GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0" on that page for the bit that explains how to
reveal the menu.

If you dont fancy making a permanent change you can (according to [1])
just hold down the shift key as the computer boots to reveal the menu.
Not tried that myself though.

Regards,
Andrew

Just got my laptop - that hasn't had the recent updates installed as I
haven't been using it, and Flash is still working perfectly.

Now I can't decide whether to install the upgrades or not!

As an aside to this - both my machines now only have Ubuntu on them, so
I don't have the GRUB screen when I start up. But what if I want to load
an old kernel (following update problems)? How can I do that?

The bug is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sudo/+bug/556293

as I had encountered this yesterday.

In fact, it has been a problem for a while. I reported it as a bug (my
first ever report).
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/adobe-flashplugin/+bug/494955

Since I reported it in Dec 2009, nothing happened to it :-(

If you have a router, it's unlikely to work for you.

The problem is that the proxy server setting doesn't get kept when you
use 'sudo' to run the update.

The solution is to run the following 3 commands in a terminal session:

sudo -s
export http_proxy=http://
dpkg-reconfigure flashplugin-installer

There's a bug filed for this, but I can't find it at the moment. It
sounds like this solution is not going to work for you though.

Oh, I wonder, could you post this to the group, as I still have problems
with my Flash stuff. I have a router too.

Thanks

Do you have a proxy server between you and the internet. If so there's
a bug that prevents the download of the new Flash version (although
the package says it has installed successfully).

If that's the problem, let me know and I'll tell you the work-around.

[ubuntu-uk] Flash problems in 10.04

2010-09-07 Thread Dianne Reuby
I've suddenly got problems with Flash - it was working fine until a few
days ago.

I have Flash 10.1.82.76ubuntu0.10.04.2 on Ubuntu 10.04, but YouTube and
other flash sites tell me I need to upgrade to the latest Flash version
10.

I've tried Flash-Aid, which seems to run OK but I still have the
problem. I've tried safe mode, with all extensions disabled, but still
get the problem.

Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic-pae
Gnome 2.30.2

It may have started after the last update that included Linux headers -
but if that's the cause I thought I would have seen more
comments/complaints here - trouble is I have only been doing none-flash
stuff on this machine for a few days, so not sure exactly when it
started. My graphics card is pretty basic - ATI Xpress 200, but it's
been OK with Flash.

TIA

Dianne
