Re: [ubuntu-uk] Flyers

2009-06-13 Thread Matt Jones
Just a report back on my findings, I bought a pack of 15cm*15cm paper
bags froom booker, and gave it a go. With my old HP colour laserjet
they printed pretty well, it isn't a photo quality print, but is
suprisingly decent. It probably won't work with a 4 pass system, due
to the layers and folds, although I havn't tried it. I don't think
printing the back will work, I tried a couple of times and it just
jammed. It may be possible in an ordinary B&W printer as the paper
path is generally less complicated. You do need to feed them
individually as they are are attached on a plastic loop thing.

Hope this help, I will experiment further when I get some time!

Matt.

Didn't think of that, I'm sure I can find a shop that might spare a
couple. I am a member of Makro and Booker it's just a case of getting
up there one day (I don't have one too near to me so it's usually a case
of a special trip).

Yes I can see your point. I have distributed a fair few Ubuntu & Open
Disc CDs at local shops including one computer shop who sell CDs, all
this has been funded by myself (usually a case of buying 100 or so CDs
online, burning them, printing labels and sticking them in sleeves to
give away). Although the per disc cost isn't much (say 20p a disc) it
all mounts up. What I'm hoping to do at the first upcoming event (a
school fete) is to give away the Ubuntu CDs which I have got from
Ship-It along with leaflets and sell copies of the OpenDisc at say 50p a
disc which covers my expenses and any profits will then go to the
school. I'm actually hoping that I can encourage the school to get the
pupils to help out (say to design a CD label, CD inlay and maybe a
flyer) and then they could sell copies of the disc at the school.

You would find those tricky to print as they often have a surface
somewhere between greaseproof paper and ordinary paper, so an inkjet
printer may have trouble with adhesion. Also it is very thin, so if it
does stick then bleeding may also be an issue. I wouldn't laser print
as I imagine they would get stuck in the internals. It is a nice idea,
next time I am in the cash and carry I will try and get some to see

it's the postage cost that is the sting. If you have a catering
supplies place near you they might be worth a try, otherwise booker
cash and carry have them, although you do need to be a member, I don't
think you need to be a business anymore though.

Or just nip to the corner shop and see if you can blag a couple ;)

ok will do.

Note- the basic reason for the leaflet being non colour is quite
simply, cost. At the Mac world/Linux world in London earlier in the
year, I found that 80 per day (4 days) went. If there is even minimal
colour, it changes the basis of cost a lot. And my wife knows I am on
a pension..

There is another tangential reason for me not using much - if any -
colour. Although Ubuntu is backed by a commercial company, it is easy
for the onlooker to believe that these free CDs are the same as any
other 'free' CD - that they have an invisible hook into their wallet.

I believe that simple non colour leaflets allow a gentle message that
at my end at least, this is a pure volunteer community based activity.
If I do have any shipit CDs then wonderful, however, most times I burn
my own and they are lowest cost, hand marked, for the same reason.

That would be great thanks Alan. I do have a colour laser so printing
off a few colour leaflets isn't that much of a problem but it would also
be handy to have some black and white leaflets too (since I get moaned
at by the wife when I print in colour as it is technically her printer).

I have a folded leaflet - black text no colour - which I try to keep
up to date and use at my regular showings at local computer fairs. If
you would like to try it out you are welcome. Shall I send a file to
your address?

format is 2 folds vertically from an A4 size sheet.

[ubuntu-uk] Flyers

2009-06-03 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

A couple of us our local LUG have got an event coming up in the next
couple of weeks (well two in fact, one in a couple of weeks and one in
about a month's time. Now I have a few Ubuntu CDs from Canonical which
we're hoping to distribute to visitors but I was wondering if anyone had
any flyers which could be distributed alongside them?

I remember a couple of years back there was a nice colourful leaflet
which had a 'Windows XP' like background on it, in fact I have about 5
of these from my Ubuntu events kit (basically a load of Ubuntu CDs and
bits and pieces) and I'd love to print some more but I haven't got the
original files anymore.

I just wondered if anyone had any material?

While I think about it too, I had another idea. If we're going to be
giving away multiple CDs and leaflets (say Ubuntu, OpenDisc etc) then
wouldn't it be great to provide a bag to put them all in?

Well I thought, rather than paying for plastic bags, how about using
paper bags. On doing some searching I found this...
http://tinyurl.com/onh7hk

It looks like it's possible to buy white paper bags (like what small
independent newsagents and fruit shops may use) for a few quid for
1000. I thought it might be possible to put these through a printer (at
least an inkjet, maybe even a laser) and print the Ubuntu or Tux logo on
them. I figured that 21 x 21 cm bags then we could fit a couple of CDs
and a couple of A5 or A4 folded leaflets in there. I am tempted to buy
a pack although it's a shame that they don't seem to do small sample
packs of say 5 bags just to try (I'd rather not buy 1,000 and find they
aren't any use).
