[ubuntu-uk] Icons go missing ...

2015-01-12 Thread Barry Drake
Hi there I'm running 15.04 testing 64bit, on a desktop pc. For
month or two now, the Unity launcher bar loses icons after (usually) the
second launch of a particular program during a session. Firefox and
Thunderbird are two such icons. In each case, the specified icon is
replaced by a grey square with a question mark. After re-boot, all icons
are restored. I'd like to file a bug report, but I don't know whether
this is a Unity bug, or something that is part of something Unity uses.

Any thoughts?

Regards,Barry.

Have you tested something like Plank to see if it's a desktop issue? It
sounds like something is losing state and it could either be the desktop or
the container.

I think the OP is trying to assist in this development process by the early
reporting of regressions, rather than actively trying to use an unstable
version for day-to-day use.
Thanks Neil. I can't imagine anyone on this list being unaware that
Vivid is unstable! I have Utopic available on a separate hard-drive as
a dual boot fallback, and all data is synced between the two drives. I
always use the unstable testing version for day-to-day use until it
folds. It is then a simple job to re-install or repair, but I can use
the stable version for regular work.

This way, I can spot and report things like the icon bug which won't
show up on a single testing use such as with testdrive.

With regard to Simon Greenwood's suggestion, icons are stable and OK on
the desktop itself, so I think it unlikely that installing Plank would
help. As always, I am reluctant to deviate from the 'out of the box'
offering so I don't miss any problems that occur within the new
version. If no one has any other suggestions, I'll report it as a Unity
bug, and let someone else move it to an upstream issue if necessary.

Hi Barry,

I think this bug is what you're talking about:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1407192

It's being investigated.

Cheers, Will
