Yes - I can vouch for theseI've got a couple in the wild now and
they're awesome devices for the money. ARM processor and run Debian very
nicely, although not tried with Ubuntu (although apparently you get them now
with Ubuntu preinstalled). http://newit.co.uk sell them in the UK. They
support SD cards or you can mount USB HDD's. I personally use them for
remote network monitoring and remote SOCKS proxies... but they have enough
power to be (very) low end webservers or many other things :)

I think you will find the service is called samba not smbd, when you start
samba it start's processes of smbd and nmbd.

So sudo /etc/init.d/samba start

2010-08-19 Thread Kenny Coyle
Hi Cornelius!

To confirm, do you know if smbd is running or not on your joggler?

You can test this by using the commands:

sudo /etc/init.d/smbd stop
sudo /etc/init.d/smbd start

The first one will fail if you don't have it running in the first place.

If the second command fails, there will likely be an issue with you
samba configuration...

Best,

K.

It is not clear to me what software you are running on the Joggler.
Are you running the internal s/w (as is suggested by point 2 above) or

On the joggler wiki (http://www.jogglerwiki.info but seems to be down at
the mo), there was a discussion about replacing the *plastic* heat-sink
with something a bit more substantial using a dremel and a metal
heat-sink from Farnell IIRC.

I think this may well be the main cause of reliability issues.

I have mine running Disca's Ubuntu image collecting data from my

crashed yet as far as I can remember. It is not doing a lot however
so the temperature problems that some have seen have not been an issue
for me.

I gather that some have had incompatibility problems with USB sticks.

[ubuntu-uk] Joggler woes

2010-05-29 Thread Colin Law
I just want to get my Joggler story off my chest. It may make me feel better.

I ordered one shortly after the initial price cut. Unfortunately by
then they were out of stock but a few weeks later it arrived. I
started it up and all seemed well. Off it went to download the latest
software which appeared to go ok, but when it restarted it just sat
there forever with the O2 logo and nothing else happened.

I contacted their support team multiple times over the next couple of
weeks while they attempted to sort it out. Meanwhile I got Ubuntu up
and running on USB with only minor issues. Eventually O2 decided that
I should return the unit and they would replace it. Even though I did
not really need the built in s/w working I decided to do this in case
I ever wanted to sell it, if my planned Ubuntu requirement did not
come to fruition (running my weather station). I returned it and a
few days later instead of a replacement I got an email saying that
they had refunded my money.

OK, I thought, it is back on offer at £49.99 so I can just order a new
one. Unfortunately by this time it was out of stock and they were no
longer accepting orders. All my local O2 stores were out of stock
also. I rang sales but they are not accepting orders by phone either,
and the girl I spoke to said she was not sure that there would be any
more in. It is now approaching the end of the offer period and I do
not know whether I will ever get one. I wish I had not sent it back
now, but it is a bit late.

FreeNX is good, but it'll give you a separate X session rather than a
session to the desktop running on the Joggler screen.

I use FreeNX to occasionally connect to remote servers as it compresses
what it sends and gives much better performance than say VNC when using
a slow link.

In the FreeNX client you can specify a shadow session which joins the currently

[ubuntu-uk] Joggler Remote Desktop sharing

2010-04-24 Thread Colin Law
Hi

I am trying to get remote desktop sharing working with my O2 Joggler
running Karmic UNE. I had to install vino and it works in the sense
that I can connect, see the screen, move and click the mouse and type
things, but the screen does not seem to be updating properly,
sometimes it does not update when the joggler display changes. Has
anyone successfully used vino on the joggler? I have seen freenx
mentioned as an alternative, again has anyone tried it? It seems a
little more complex to setup so I am just checking whether anyone has
already tried before I give it a go. Perhaps there is another better
alternative?

This is almost certain due to the fact that UNR has a compiz-style
(but not compiz) user interface which VNC has trouble with.

grub.cfg is in /boot/grub/grub.cfg

However, this is an automatically generated file and I wouldn't update
it directly. It is generated by the files that are in /etc/grub.d and
uses the configuration file /etc/default/grub. There's a great online
tutorial[1] if you want to have a go at customising grub.

Is there anything that could give you a hint in grubenv? Alternatively do any

From discussion on this previously on the list, I think we concluded that
the issue is most likely related to the powersaving of the audio chipset.
That the audio chipset driver (ALSA) is not able to resume when the
kernel decides
to put the system in power saving mode. The workaround would be to indicate
to ALSA not to enter in powersaving at all. The problem solution would be
to contact the alsa-devel mailing list and ask for some help on this issue.
See more for both at
http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com/msg23128.html

Daniel Case (from this list) sent an e-mail to alsa-devel,
http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2010-April/026774.html
but sadly there have been no reply.

I do not own a Joggler (though I would really love to) so I can only give you
guidance on how to solve.

One way to solve the problem within this list would be to get the
source code of the Joggler
(see http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2010-April/026774.html
)
and example the Linux kernel source code (includes ALSA).
Then, identify the version of the kernel, grab the official stock
Linux kernel from www.kernel.org,
and perform a 'diff -r linus_kernel joggler_kernel' between the two
directories (with source code). Any differences
in the ALSA subdirectories would be changes that Joggler (OpenPeak)
did to get sound working.
These should be a few lines of changes, which should be easy to update
to the latest Linux kernel.
You can post these changes to the list.

For a similar situation with audio driver support, see

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Joggler crackling, idle=halt in Grub.cfg

2010-04-22 Thread Neil Greenwood
Does 'locate grub.cfg' tell you where the file is? Otherwise, try the
find command.

I've only tried the telnet hack on my Joggler so far - it didn't work
for me. I'm putting together a UNR usb stick now, to give that a go.

Joggler uses .efi instead of BIOS to boot. If you're booting from USB stick
check the boot.nsh file. It should look like

fs1:
cd \efi\grub
grub

You're likely to find grub.cfg in the same folder as the grub.efi bootloader
application. In this case it's at /etc/grub/grub.cfg

Cheers

Sorry, that was a typo, it should be efi not etc (so you'll find it at
/efi/grub/grub.cfg)

[ubuntu-uk] Joggler running UNR

2010-04-17 Thread Toby Satchell
Hi,

I have got the Joggler running with sound and it seems to work really
well, thanks very much for the info on how to install Ubuntu Netbook
Remix.

I still have the keyboard attached via a USB hub.

How do you enable an on screen keyboard?

I have managed to get onboard (Which is a on screen keyboard) to flash
up and then appear to close.
I tried Gok but that didn't seem to work properly either.

I have the on screen keyboard on the X login though.

Thanks,

Toby.

I set up a JogglerWiki a while back,

The UNR instructions are here:

Touchscreen does work, however an onscreen keyboard is still a work in
progress.
