Re: [ubuntu-uk] My 'snazzy Korean laptop' has conked out
Are you trying to start it on battery or power lead ? Disconnect and reconnect the battery a few times. Try it power lead only. When it's turned off sniff the power socket. Can you smell burning ? If yes then I think it's young James' department. I had one that reported a damaged or discharged battery. I took the battery out and used the power lead for a couple of months. Plugged the completely discharged battery back in and it now holds a charge where before it would shut down in minutes from a full charge. regards Ged. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/ -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

A friend of mine had similar problems to this, and when he contacted the supplier they told him to take the battery out for a couple of minutes then put it back in and start it up, and his worked after he did that. [ubuntu-uk] My 'snazzy Korean laptop' has conked out
Hi. My 'Linux Certified' (Compal JHL-90) just died on me. First the display froze, then when I force-restarted it, it wouldn't go past the first Intel splash screen (with no boot options strip at the bottom), and now it just generates no display at all, though the screen is backlit normally. The fan runs for two or three seconds then stops, which is its normal behaviour, so this seems like a hardware fault that stops the Operating System from booting. It could just be that the CPU is loose in its socket. Is there anyone reading this list or recommended by those who do, that I can take it to in central London? I shall pay any repair cost and get 'Linux Certified' to refund me (since it's still under hardware guarantee). -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Turned out to be lack of cooling causing the video card to go pop. It could just be that the CPU is loose in its socket. Cheers, Al. I was just about to say the same Alan. There was a laptop in at work the other day doing something similar, and usually it is the graphics card. However, there has been a case where it was a stick of faulty RAM or RAM bay. Try taking your sticks out one at a time and swapping them between bays.
