[ubuntu-uk] Query about connecting a Ubuntu pc and an xbox

2009-03-12 Thread javadayaz
Ok same old dead topic i know.

Im looking to buy a house and obviously my first thoughts in this new house
are connectivity. Basically I want to use my pc as hub for all my
entertainment. It will be stored in a seperate room where it will be
connected to 26 moniter doing pc things but i also want to beam the media
into the main living room where a bigger tv will reside. Naturally i want to
do this without the aide of wires. Im thinking connect up an xbox1 to a tv
and beam across the media from my ubuntu pc to my xbox. But my old xbox
doesnt have wifi (it does have media centre). Or maybe that has some kind of
wifi built in!

I then want to use my G1 Android phone to control everything. Like a remote.

I know there is an OS (in linux) that does all this and more but thats more
of the software side of things im looking more of the hardware issues.

ps my pc currently doesnt have wifi so that would be the first thing to look
at!

pps im so excited at the prospects of this! :)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Query about connecting a Ubuntu pc and an xbox

2009-03-12 Thread Ciaran Mooney
Hi,

I have a similar set up to the one you want.

I have an Ubuntu box sharing folders using SAMBA, connected to a wired
network, along with an old Xbox with XBMC. There's not much else to
it.

I'm not sure if there is anything like a wireless remote for a G1.
However the Xbox does have a python interpreter installed so you could
write your own.

Hardware wise the old Xbox doesn't come with wireless. You can't use a
USB wireless dongle unless you install something like Linux for the
Xbox, but then XBMC won't work. You'd also have to hack the dongle to
work with the Xbox's USB ports (which are the controller ports).

There are ethernet--wireless adapters out there
(http://www.purelygadgets.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=19624wysiwyg=10)
but they are pretty expensive. Just get a long ethernet cable and be
done with it! Or maybe use one of the ethernet-over-power things
(http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/default_ShopGroup.asp?ShopGroupID=61Alt=Yes).

You're still stuck with the G1 bit, but I'd reccomend getting a Xbox
remote control from ebay or something. XBMC has been designed to use
it well.

Good luck.

You have a couple of options for connecting the XBOX. Probably the
easiest without running cables (which is what I did for future proofing)
is to get a couple of Powerline Ethernet adaptors which basically plug
into the mains and have an ethernet socket in them. You'll need at
least two to create a network. You can then either plug these into an
ethernet switch and from the switch into the XBOX ethernet port or
directly from the Powerline ethernet adaptor into the XBOX.

With regards to adding wifi on your PC, do you really need wifi? Have
you thought about broadband?

You might find it's easier enough to plug your PC into your router if
you can get away with it (of course this depends if you can put your
router near your PC). If you can't plug your PC directly into your
router (say it's in a different room) then you should be able to plug in
a USB Wifi adaptor or PCI Wifi card (others on here will probably be
able to advise you what works and what doesn't, I know my old Netgear
WG111 USB adaptor does work out of the box).

If you wanted to connect your XBOX via wifi then you'd need a wireless
access point which can connect to an existing wireless network. I
managed this for a friend by flashing his Buffalo router with the
OpenWRT firmware and then getting it to bridge to his existing wireless
network although I'd say it wasn't dead easy the first time round.
There may be other wifi access points which do the job easier.

Another thought which might be easier, if you can put your router next
to or near your XBOX then you could plug the XBOX directly into that and
then as you say add Wifi to your PC. That way the XBOX will be able to
go through the router's wireless connection.

With regards to the Android though, not sure how to do this as I haven't
got one. Someone else might be able to advise.

I did something similar although I did it pre-wireless so I ended up
running some CAT5 cables up to the loft and put a server and switch in
the loft. If you're buying your own house and it needs redecorating and
you're handy with DIY then you may be able to put the cables in the
walls neatly (this is what I'm planning on doing when I redecorate with
the help of my dad who is good at DIY - I'm hopeless at it!). Saying
that though I guess it may be better to go for CAT6 cable for future
proofing.

You could use powerline adapters to send your network through your
electrical wiring. No messy cables across the floor and, in my
experience, a much more reliable connection than using wireless.

Indeed i have the option of keeping the xbox upstairs in the spare room and
beam it across to the tv ( i only wanted to put the xbox in the living room

would that still work?

About the G1, theres already an app out there called Gmote which turns the
phone into a wifi remote control. it works well with the pc (havent tried it
yet myself).

XBMC has a web page built into it that can be used as a remote. So you
could connect your android to the wirless network and then use that to
control the xbox. I haven't used this for a long time though as it was a
bit rubbish - the official xbox remote was much better.

If you look on the android market place there is an application called gMote

apart from rewiring i dont see how else those cables can be truly hidden.

And i dont wana be one of those people who when they show off their hd to
their friends they dont actually have the hd content to back it up so its
going to have to be able to play at least a good quality of content! I would
probably think the house electric wires are probably better built for that!

I had that problem, the solution was 2 part.
 1. Get trunking and do the cable properly so that they are hidden.
 2. Make sure there is lots of goodies on the media centre for her :)

I currently has a Netgear EVA8000 media centre, connected over 100MBit
lan cable. It streams the data from my NAS box in another room. On HD
video it struggles. This could be anything from the processing power of
the Netgear, to the disk read speed of the NAS, to the limit of the LAN
connection. I suspect the LAN is the problem.

I would therefore suggest that you look at making the best connections
to avoid this problem. Fixed cable first, then AC network, and then only
 resort to wireless.

 Cheers,
 Michael

Hi,

Having the XMBC a distance from the TV itself could be an issue.
Although there are those TV broadcasting things
(http://www.digisender.net/wireless-tech.php) where you plug in an
adapter into say a set-top box and it broadcastds over RF to the
reciever plugged into the TV. The link is to a fancy one with IR
capabilities, I'm sure there are cheaper ones that just broadcast the
sound and video and thats it.

I'm thinking that the ethernet-over-power is your best option, with
the XBMC hidden from sight in the lounge somewhere. Behind the TV?

That's what I'm planning on doing, I have cables running down the walls
but we're going to redecorate the house this year and my dad being a
decorator is helping (in return for me fixing his PC :-). I like the
idea that putting in cabling will at least future proof me for when I
eventually upgrade my network to Gigabit. With regards to goodies that
my other half likes, well I'm working on that, she likes Ultrastar and I
see there is a Linux version so that's one of the killer apps that the
Media Centre PC will have on it when I get it built up.
I currently has a Netgear EVA8000 media centre, connected over 100MBit

What sort of HD content is it?

I stream HD content from my server over a 100Mbit connection via Samba
and it tends to work fine (although it's only 720p as that is all my TV
supports).
I would therefore suggest that you look at making the best connections

Agreed. From experience I have found wireless to be fine for standard
definition content and audio but no use for HD video and at least going
down the cabling option, once it's done it should in theory support
Gigabit ethernet and possibly faster in the future?

Yep you're right. Doesn't matter so much though if you don't have a
HDTV. If you do then maybe you'd be worth looking at a HD media
extender like the Popcorn Hour which is currently about £200
(http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=177495partner=froogle). It was
recently reviewed in Linux format and it does a whole load of different
formats plus has an interface for an internal hard drive (and Ethernet)
or maybe you could look at building a MythTV box to plug into the TV
(you'd be looking at about £200 to £300 depending on what kit you get).

I was lucky enough to be given a bare boxes small form factor HP PC for
exactly this. Just need to get a CPU and hard drive for it (oh and a
couple of Freeview sticks).

likely to be using 200mbit adapters but I'm willing to bet it's
substantially below the rated speed. Has anyone got any experience using

Hi,

The XBMC can't decode HD content, but it does upscale SD to HD if you
want to have a pseudo-HD experience on your nice HD telly.

Speaking to my dad about the same thing, he advised me I've have to put
in a conduit in the wall (so cut out a bit of plaster), put the cabling

cable before plastering it. Not really ideal if you've just
redecorated. The only reason I'm getting away with it is because we're
redecorating and at the moment we're in the process of stripping wallpaper.
And i dont wana be one of those people who when they show off their hd
to their friends they dont actually have the hd content to back it up
so its going to have to be able to play at least a good quality of
content! I would probably think the house electric wires are probably
 better built for that!
Well the XBOX won't really play HD content, it's just not really up to
the job of doing it properly which is a shame really as I really do like
XBMC (yes I know it's available for Linux Windows although if I was
putting a PC in I'd put MythTV or Windows Media Center on it instead).

Cheers,
Michael

What sort of HD content is it?

I stream HD content from my server over a 100Mbit connection via Samba
and it tends to work fine (although it's only 720p as that is all my TV
 supports).

http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/

The 720p works fine
The 1080p keeps having to buffer.

My TV also only only supports 720p. I used the 1080p to benchmark. Now I
know I don't need to bother upgrading to fullHD yet :)

Another option is to ditch the xbox and get something like the popcorn
hour (http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/) which as an optional
wireless dongle. It also supports full HD so you could fit a hard drive
into it and copy over HD from the network to play - although obviously
coping over the content would take a while.
