Are there any fixes that people know about for this? Solved! (Sort of...) it seems that the drivers supplied with Ubuntu 8.10 are very susceptible to distance, and don't like being too far away from the WAP! I moved he laptop about 6 feet, and got 100% signal, and am downloading updates at the top rate of our broadband as we speak! Thanks to all who replied. Harry I think build-essential is a meta-package, a package which doesn't contain any programs itself but which causes other packages to be installed. You'd have to download all these as well. Your best bet might be to install packages from the cd you originally installed ubuntu with if you have it. 2009/3/30 Harry Rickards hricka...@l33tmyst.com: In that case, if you can't or don't want to install off the CD, try Kerri. It seems to be just what you're looking for, a program that allows you to download packages and their dependencies on another computer, and transfer them via a USB Stick. I haven't personally used it, and I don't know if it supports meta-packages, but it received a good review in Linux Journal (a Linux Magazine I read.) Harry Do you mean keryx? Downloaded it, but haven't tried it yet: it does what you say. Cofion, Neil. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

There is a very old bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/275302 and I've emailed the people who are listed as the module developers, but had no response. It looks like the device just randomly drops a LOT of packets. I've had a quick look at trying to fix it myself, but I don't really understand how these things work! Not very helpful I know, some people have had some success with ndiswrapper, a horrible hack I know, but if it works? -Matt Daubney I've been looking at this: http://zenzike.blogspot.com/2008/11/wireless-woes.html which seems to have had a good response - however I get into trouble with the patching process - there is apparently no command patch in Ubuntu, and when I go to Synaptic to install it, there is no patch available. Any ideas on that one? Yep, this should be easy to solve! Try installing the 'build-essential' package using your favourite method. If you're not familiar with installing software on Ubuntu, choose 'Synaptic Package Manager' from the 'System Administration' menu, then search for the package name. Click on the empty checkbox and choose to mark for installation. At the bottom, click the Apply button and it will install. I might have missed a step here, so shout if you need more help. Are there any fixes that people know about for this? Hello, Gordon. I had a similar problem with the Broadcom WiFi chipset on my Asus A6K notebook, so I installed ndiswrapper-utils and ndisgtk, which is a GUI for setting up NDIS drivers. I've now got a 54Mb/s WiFi connection!
