The above command will (re-)install anything that _should_ be

Surprising how often this command 'magically' fixes stuff.

Thanks to all who have replied. I think I have a far better
understanding now of the release process. This is the first time I've
followed a release through all stages by actually using it. It's been a
very interesting process, and I have nothing but total admiration to the
various bug-teams. I shall certainly repeat the process again with
Quirky (or whatever 12.10 gets to be called). Obviously I'll set it up
to dual-boot with Precise and keep meticulous backups.

Regards,Barry.

Indeed. The installed system (outside /home) will almost certainly be the
same as if you did a base install with the final release. However, you may
have to delete some dotfiles in your home directory if default
configuration options changed.

There is a very tiny chance that software packages installed in the alpha
will be removed by the final, and that these won't be automatically removed
from your system. In that case, just run:

sudo apt-get autoremove

I'd suggest not to worry about it and see how it turns out. It'll probably
be just fine.

Tyler

My understanding is you'll have the same version more or less. Can't
vouch for any customisations but I am in the same position and that's
my understanding!

Subject: [ubuntu-uk] Regular updates, and alpha/beta releases .
Hi there This is probably a stupid question. I've been using
Precise 12.04 ever since the beginning of Alpha 1. I installed it for
testing, but found it so stable I have been using it on a day to day
basis ever since. I have taken the updates on a daily basis, watched it
as it changed, and filed bug reports as needed.

My question: is what I am now using exactly the same as if I took the
Alpha 2 release and updated this? And when we get to April release
date, will I then have an installation exactly the same as the newly
released Precise Pangolin, or ought I to re-install? Clearly, I don't
yet understand how the alpha/beta/release process works.

Kind regards,Barry.

Effectively yes.

Debatable. There may be the odd setting here or there which you may be
carrying from an earlier update, but it's pretty much identical. Some
might suggest creating a clean user or deleting certain dot-directories
in your home, or doing a clean install. Up to you really.

I think you do :)

If you install a development version before release you're going to get
a lot of updates up until release. Then you'll start getting the usual
bug/security updates afterwards.

Al.
