Re: [ubuntu-uk] Small low powered Linux box running Xu buntu for £99
We bought one of these here at work on spec as they looked like a good deal...they're rubbish and virtually no good for anything at all. Seoras 2008/5/9 Sean Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I think the issue is that they haven't updated their configurator... clearly the MPC-L is a different beast, running XUbuntu etc. rather than Mandrake (sic) Pretty useless site, anyway. Hi, Perhaps I was a bit harsh the machines have their uses although they were no good for us. The main problems we found were that they're very underpowered and slow and the graphics weren't that great. Having said that if you don't mind a slow boot and just use it for the web etc. they're OK plus they are very small and have a low power consumption. I also think someone mentioned that they are only available to the public sector and this is correct we got one from Viglen to try out but normally they would supply in bulk to Universities and schools etc. Seoras 2008/5/9 Sean Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED]: On Fri, May 9, 2008 at 10:15 AM, George MacLeod [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: We bought one of these here at work on spec as they looked like a good deal...they're rubbish and virtually no good for anything at all. Anyone have experience with the Linutop device ( http://www.linutop.com/linutop2/index.en.html )? I am thinking of getting one for a low-power machine. Right now I need something simple that will allow me to set up a webcam with motion detection, and I am thinking of this :) Matthew On Fri, May 9, 2008 at 2:11 PM, George MacLeod [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, Perhaps I was a bit harsh the machines have their uses although they were no good for us. i smell a torrents machine thingy..lol 2008/5/8 Rob Beard [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Just been reading The Register about a new MSI Mini-ITX based PC that that's being released for about £235. Reading through the comments, someone posted this... http://www.viglen.co.uk/viglen/Products_Services/Product_Range/Product_file.aspx?eCode=XUBUMBCLType_Info=DescriptionType=DesktopsGUID=22166764417 It doesn't say exactly what spec it is but it does have a 40GB hard drive, 4 x USB2 ports and it comes preinstalled with Xubuntu. I can only assume it has something like an AMD Geode or VIA C7 CPU in there. Still for £99 it's a really good price and would make a lovely little Linux box that as show on the site can be mounted on the back of a TFT monitor. Javad Ayaz wrote: i smell a torrents machine thingy..lol Yep, no doubt you can upgrade the hard drive and memory, and with USB2 on there it would probably happily run a big external hard drive and printer. Just what I need for my new printer/scanner/copier. I was a bit wrong on the price though, it's £99 plus VAT delivery, so no doubt nearer to about £130. Might be worth a call to them to see how much a single unit is on it's own. My guess though if it's going to be nearer £200, a MiniITX based PC might work out cheaper.
