They should do...
I use Gobuntu on a day to day basis!

But it's not good enough really. In fact it's not good enough for either
camp as I've tried to compromise on this issue using it.

I'm well aware that gobuntu/ubuntuwith "free software only" contains
non-free software, specifically in ubuntu-linux-modules-generic in main
or something. There's a bug filed somewhere.

Having said that my desktop runs Gobuntu, my laptop runs gNewSense and
I'm looking at moving my desktop that way, but it's non-trivial...

Anyway, thanks for the thought,

Nice Gong-a-thon talk at LRL by the way :)

Yep, it's a fair question and a difficult one to answer, it's also not
one the group has come to a definitive agreement on yet.

I'm not sure how widely known it is actually, but because distributing
the CD would mean distributing non-free software I don't think it
would make a difference to a lot of people. To be fair, as a free
software group it would be a bit hypocritical to distribute (and
therefore encourage) non-free software, particularly as there are free
alternatives. However, I tend to take the more pragmatic approach ;)

Ok. I'll be honest here, I didn't _know_ that you'd say "no" to Ubuntu CDs
(as a group) but I pretty much guessed you would hence the leading
questions.

Does the group know the the Ubuntu CD has a "Free Software Only" install
option?

I expect this isn't good enough for them though.

Haha. :)
Let's just say there are several people who favour giving out Ubuntu CDs
and some who think it counter the aims of the day.
I am unclear about where I stand, though giving people all 3 discs might
be my preferred stance.
In the end this is something that MFS will probably decide for itself -
I don't particularly think it's for me to comment on.

One thing Lucy didn't mention was Free The Library[1] our mooted event
to celebrate Software Freedom Day.

It's ambitious, but if it carries through there could be considerable
press coverage. Take a look!

All the Best,

Tim

Cheers Alan, I'm on the GLLUG list as well, so will post there :-) I
believe Canonical are one of the sponsors of the day and Ubuntu CD's
are available as part of the team bundle (if you are one of the first
300 registered)

Good questions.

> What restrictions will be in place by the FSUK?
Firstly, I should point out that Manchester FS is an independent organisation.

Secondly, the FSUK doesn't really exist as an organisation (more of an
idea to be implemented), so won't be making any restrictions. Anyway,
I think the idea was for the FSUK to be a kind of umbrella under which
FS user groups could gather, so probably wouldn't ever give out any
rules (although obviously this is not up to me). I'd like it to become
something like lug.org.uk!

> Will that group allow giving out of Ubuntu CDs?

Hmm, difficult one ;)

Personally, I would love to give out Ubuntu CDs. Unfortunately, when I
made the suggestion on the list others weren't so keen ;) We will
definitely be giving out the openDisc and gNewSense CDs and I'm hoping
to eventually convince the others involved in organising the event
that we should give out Ubuntu CDs too.

No strictly Ubuntu, but we [1] are planning to have an event in
Manchester this year [2]. If any northerners want to get involved that
would be great!
