Just to let the list know that Steve and I have exchanged a few messages off-list, and I now have an excellent sound effects machine with hotkeys CTRL+F1 through CTRL+F11 programmed to make different instant sounds, and CTRL+F12 programmed to do "killall [something123 varies according to the audio filetype]" music123 can run a number of instances, so simultaneous effects or music are well possible. I'd say it's a sound engineers dream - and I know of nothing in Windows that comes remotely close!!! Also, I'm going to make all my audio filetypes open with music123 but then I really like commandline apps. A public thankyou Steve. Hope your cold soon passes. Just tested with a gunshot sound from http://www.freesound.org/forum/index.php?sid=881d1a01c51c2a1f428561754762892b and set to ctrl+F1. I renamed the file gg.wav and set the hotkey to "music123 /home/steve/Downloads/gg.wav" without the quotes, there appears to be no latency! Thanks for all the suggestions on this thread. On Tue, 2010-10-05 at 21:58 +0100, Byte Soup wrote: > Im assuming the delay was due to some lead in silence on the track? A normal CD player wont have the functionality to be able to cue up the track just before the sound. You need a DJ cd player like a pioneer CDJ-800 to do things like that. However on the software side I havent tried mixxx but I would say any "DJ" application would do it, examples I can think of are Ableton, Traktor, (not linux apps those though), or any other linux based DJ apps which allow you to cue up a track. However heres another angle you might want to try: 1. Install Audacity in Ubuntu. 2. Play your sound effects into audacity and record them 3. Edit them and chop off the lead in silence of the effects. 4. Save them out as audio or digital files (depends on your CD player, will it play mp3?) 5. Burn the tracks onto a CD When you play them on a regular CD player, they should fire off almost instantly. -Mark -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Probably not quite ideal, but mixxx does a reasonable job of this (it's a digital DJ app). As far as I can tell you can only load 2 tracks at once, but it's easy to create playlists to queue up your other sound effects. It can be configured to use either JACK or ALSA, and its ALSA driver works fine with pulseaudio. -- Matt Wheeler m...@funkyhat.org -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] Sound effects ....
Just spent a long time searching through fora with no result. I want to play mp3's of stage sound effects and music tracks. The problem is that they have to be on cue. Like: imagine a gunshot with a two second delay (that happened last year when the sound man used audio CD's)! At least it was a laugh. I had a Windows app that did the job reasonably well, but I don't want to have to revert to Windows, and the app I mentioned doesn't like Wine AFAIK.
