No. (To whichever question it applies to.)

I have always been in favour of exploration, though it is limited by my
abilities. Ubuntu/Linux interests me as (a) free, (b) now usable and
(c) possibly a future. So once a week or so I give it a thrash with
something or other.

It runs on my Big Mac, on which also runs Reunion for genealogy and RISC
OS (capitals and two words, the correct form) for more or less
everything else. The fourth operating system that the BM runs is Windows
in a VMWare virtual machine like Ubuntu.

Hello Tim,

Have you abandoned RiscOS, or are you just dallying? ;-)

Best wishes,

I have installed it as an upgrade to 8.04 64 bit (from a CDROM). What I
cannot find is any indication of what I have got, whether it is a 32bit
for x86s or 64bit. It works anyhow and no significant problems to date.

The insignificant problem is that I have installed it in a VMWare
virtual machine (Fusion version 2 on a Mac) and when I shut down any
version (32bit or 64bit) of Ubuntu 8,10, they hang in the terminal just
before the final instruction to close down the virtual machine. I can
type in the terminal window but no command that I've though of will do
anything.

I intend to run the 8.10 version in a virtual machine first. Always best
to test a new system before deploying it live. However, not many people
are seeding the Ubuntu 8.10 AMD64 DVD, which I am downloading via
bittorrent from LinuxTracker.org. Kubuntu 8.10 AMD64 has already
downloaded and had a lot more seeders. I will try that out too when I
get the chance.

2008-11-01 Thread George MacLeod
Alan,
just thought I'd get back to you, I had a crack at this again today and
found that many others
have had the same
problem. I finally go back to the Gnome Desktop but the
upgrade has removed Open Office, Firefox, Network Manger, Compiz Fusion etc.
etc. I started reinstalling packages and finally tried to get Compiz Fusion
going again so I installed xorg-driver-fglrx for my ATI Radeon X600 video
card. This just caused another freeze on re-boot so I removed the driver.

I have decide to do a fresh install of 8.04.1 and steer clear of 8.10 for
the time being as this has been the most catastrophic upgrade I've ever seen
and I will not be upgrading any of my other machines.

Cheers
George

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I will try again on Monday as this is my work PC. On
this PC I have upgraded from 7.04 > 7.10 >8.04 over the network with no
problems at all. I did have Automatix way back but removed it long ago. The
machine has been very stable till now. I didn't get a logon prompt so will
have to think of another approach.

Cheers

This was possibly not wise. For future reference if you have a
situation where the system is in a dodgy state, a restart is probably
not the best course of action at that point.

Conversely I have upgraded 5 machines and not had this kind of issue.

What's the package history on the machine? Have you ever used
automatix or something similar to install packages? What do you have
in /etc/apt/sources.list and any files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ ?

Is the "ubuntu-desktop" package still installed (assuming you can get
logged in), type this:-

dpkg -l ubuntu-desktop

(that's a lower case L).

Al.

[ubuntu-uk] System hosed during network upgrade to 8.10

2008-10-31 Thread George MacLeod
Hi,
I've just had my first *really* bad experience with Ubuntu and thought I'd
post this to the list in case anyone has any solutions.

I have been using Ubuntu since 5.04 and have never had a major problem until
now. I have upgrade before via CD and via the network and always with only
minor issue, if any, until now. I ran the network upgrade as before to go
from 8.04 to 8.10 and everything went as it had in the past, until the final
stage when I was asked to OK the removal of obsolete packages. I thought
nothing of it as this is normal, but alarm bells stated ringing when I saw
Firefox, Evolution, compiz and Xorg being removed, but the process had
already started.

I then clicked restart at the end and that's when I realised all was not
well. The PC rebooted and I got the Ubuntu splash and loading screen then
this flashed on the screen 4 times then just stayed there, nothing else
happened :-

*starting anac(h)ronistic cron anacron
*starting deferred execution scheduler atd
*starting periodic command scheduler crond
*checking battery state...
*running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)

I've tried to reboot several times with the same result and booting into
recovery mode just leaves me hanging at a terminal prompt.

Needless to say I will not be upgrading any of my other machines until I can
get this fixed.
My PC is a Dell Dimension Dual boot with XP on a corporate LAN.

Cheers
George
