[ubuntu-uk] USB Bluetooth dongle

2011-10-06 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker
As an addition to my post about mobile phones, it seems that Gammu will
only connect by bluetooth to my Nokia X3. My Netbook doesn't have bluetooth!
The Ubuntu Wiki here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsBluetoothUsbAdapters
seems a) a bit sparse with regards to brands available in the UK and
also quite a bit out of date.
Can anyone point me to a USB Bluetooth adapter that is a) available in
the UK and b) works on 10.04 LTS?

Thanks!

I have yet to find a bluetooth dongle that _doesn't_ work with Ubuntu.
There's only a couple of chipsets anyway, and they're well supported.

OK, thanks. So if I get (say) a bog-standard bluetooth adapter from
Belkin it will just plug in and work?

Keep an eye out in your local pound shop for the Live Wire branded bluetooth
dongles. They work out of the box with Ubuntu (10.04 onwards)

I'd be surprised if an el cheapie no name one didn't work. Should be fine.

I bought cheap ones from deal extreme for about 2usd.

Thanks - I'm getting all excited now - does that mean that I can use a
bluetooth mouse as well? Again, would any bluetooth mouse work?

Most wireless mice come with their own dongle. Usually that's not
Bluetooth. They also generally just work.

Thanks to all respondents - I've ordered a Bluetooth dongle (£1.90 down
from £8!) and a bluetooth mouse for £5. (I don't see the point of having
two dongles - one for the mouse and one for my phone...)

I'd be concerned that a bluetooth mouse would eat batteries more than
a non-bluetooth proprietary wireless one. Be interested to know your
experience of it. My Microsoft Wireless Mouse 3500 lasts ages.

Cheers,

I got mine from the local pound shop, and it seems to work OK. Even if
it doesn't, for a pound ...
