Have we got anywhere with this idea? As I’m sure I saw something about Locos
receiving a banner (along with other promo stuff). If this is the case,
anybody know what it looks like and can we make a copy or two?

Think "Flag not Banner"... :-)

Then you can get somebody to march around with the flag raised high
when you're collecting people and then, when enough are present to be
a "group", you stick it in the ground and fly it proudly above the
assembled masses.

Seems to work well enough in Rock Festivals amongst 150,000 people so
I'm sure it'd work fine too in a relatively sparsely populated Hyde
Park :-)

ah yes, push fit plumbing fittings, that might work quite well and is easy to
make to any size.

I believe tent pegs and some lengths of cord is the answer.

How thick is the vinyl?

The banner we had was probably about 1mm thick (maybe ever so slightly
less) but it had rings around it so it could be cable tied up to things
like railings or a fence. Okay that might not help if you've got
nothing to cable tie it to.

Couple of lumps of wood in a bucket full of concrete with the banner
cable tied to it?

(Sorry engineering isn't my strong point).

If the banner is anything like the for the LUG I'm in the (about 1 metre
high by 3 metres wide I believe) rolled up it doesn't take up that much
space and it isn't overly heavy so I guess it wouldn't cost much for a
courier.

Saying that the banner we had done was about £50 ish, so maybe if a few
of us in areas club together maybe we could raise the money to get a
couple of more banners?

(That is assuming Canonical can't help with supplying a banner, or some
funds towards a banner).

Anyone got a bright idea on how to get or make a frame for one of these

I believe that Laura Czajkowski is looking at something like this for all
LoCos, and I assume that there would be one per LoCo (they are pretty expensive
to print).

Through connections (i.e. meeting up with someone else involved in Ubuntu UK),
at other events or by collection (or via post?)
There is always a way.

Next question (or two).
How many of these are there going to be and who’s going to store them? If
somebody organises an event out side London how’s a banner going to get to them?

Joe would have walked up and down Speakers Corner with it meaning that I

I think this is a great idea. Our local LUG has a banner, although
sadly we haven't done too many events, but we did find that having an
LUG banner got one or two people off the street going into the events,
maybe because they'd heard of Linux. I'm sure an Ubuntu banner would do
the same if not more, or at least make people think "What is this Ubuntu
thing?".

Ahh I'm just as bad, I put together our LUG banner with the help of a
logo from another LUG member but it wasn't that great. Maybe something
colourful (new Ubuntu Logo, maybe even some of the Ubuntu purple
background on there?) would stand out?

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu UK Community Events Banner

2010-08-10 Thread Joe O'Dell
Hello All,

After the confusion regarding location at the GeekNic on Sunday, I thought it
would be wise to raise this point;

Is it possible to have a Ubuntu UK Community Event Banner?

It would most likely just be a rather large banner stating "Ubuntu UK - Local
Community Event" or similar (include hashtag/twitter/website?). Perhaps an
(AlanBell Shirt!) Aubergine colour for the font too?

I am, at very best, a junior designer, and as such am quite frankly shocking
when it comes to things like this. I think it would be nice, however, to have
all the ideas submitted to a pool.

The wiki page for the creation of the banner is at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/EventsBanner
