If so, try shutting Flock down and trying Media Player again - you might have to restart Media Player too. I think that Flash doesn't play very nicely with PulseAudio on 8.04 (hardy). Someone else on the list might be able to tell a better solution, but I've found that it works for me when I've got conflicts with Flash in Firefox and Rhythmbox in my 8.04 installation. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu broken, low graphics mode, no sound
I managed to get everything reinstalled, and the graphics seems okay at the moment. However, I currently have no sound in some applications, including VirtualBox and Media Player. I had sound yesterday but today nothing in these, but it is there in a video playing on a website in Flock browser. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu broken, low graphics mode, no sound
Thanks, James. I got some of the programs reinstalled, and my sound was okay after all. And thankfully my screen res/nvidia drivers all seem to be behaving themselves tonight. I just hope that newbies to Linux do not experience this kind of problem as it can be very offputting. Of course I experienced a lot of bad things with Windows in the past, which is what drove me to Linux in the first place. I just hope that Ubuntu will behave itself now. Anyone who has lost the sound on their note book can recover the missing drivers by entering the following details. Case Sensitive. Enter Terminal type sudo mv /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-lpia/updates/sound ~/sound press enter enter password press enter type sudo depmod -a press enter shut down note pad and restart sound will now be back with you HTH -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu broken, low graphics mode, no sound
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 AMD 64. I managed to reinstall Virtual Box, this time version 2.1.4 from the version I downloaded from their website. I have not upgraded Ubuntu as I prefer to have something that is well-supported and stable, as well as having at least some of the latest software. Currently I cannot get VLC reinstalled, due to dependency errors. Is there a log file that I can look at that lists all that the system did when it reinstalled the nvidia drivers and deleted many other programs? so was this using a fully updated Intrepid or a different version of Ubuntu? what version of virtualbox did you try to install? Alan. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu broken, low graphics mode, no sound
I got the normal graphics settings back by reselecting the nvidia driver through the system settings, only for it to then remove about half my installed programs!! G... This is the first time I have had a serious problem with Ubuntu, and this is really annoying. Virtual Box has disappeared, for example, along with Compiz, although I reinstalled that. When things like this can happen with an OS, I am reluctant to ever recommend it to anyone again unless this problem is prevented by being fixed asap. I just hope it does not take too long to get my system back to where it was before when it was all working okay. [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu broken, low graphics mode, no sound
I have booted into Ubuntu 3 times, and each time, it only boots into low graphics mode and with no sound. The only thing different is having installed Virtual Box last night, and now I cannot get Ubuntu working properly. What can I do to fix it?
