The power supplies are, I think, 110-240V so all you actually need is one of
those £2 or similar adaptor plugs that you see in chemists/airports etc. so
I wouldn't necessarily get put off by the fact it's a US power supply at
all.

But I'm not convinced about savings - Tesco, for instance, will do you an HP
Pavilion Dual Core laptop with Vista installed for £379.99 boasting 2GB of
RAM (the $699 one in the states - which works out almost exactly the same
price as the Tesco HP, only has 1GB), NVIDIA graphics (that's an extra $125
on the states one), 120GB hard drive (again, extra) etc... and that's before
you take into account the duty to be paid on US imports, delivery charges,
difficulty in getting the thing back to the manufacturers if it goes wrong
etc. etc.

Up until recently hardware compatability was an issue but I've not recently
had any great issues with onboard wireless in Ubuntu and sound, graphics
etc. are all well supported.

If you're a touch typist, steer well clear of importing laptops unless
 you're sure you'll get a UK keyboard.

This is always a bit of a trial... do you get used to the US layout, in
which case the keyboard matches what appears on screen, or set up Ubuntu to
use a UK layout despite the fact the keyboard says something different...
US isn't that hard to get used to, to be honest... not as bad as the German
(QWERTZ) or French (AZERTY) which is a complete headtrip... was on a
course in Munich for 2 weeks and never got used to the former at all...

I can switch pretty much between US and UK intuitively these days... it's
not that many keys in different places.

The m1330 is a nice, compact notebook, which has got a lot of positive
reviews.
It depends on what you are looking for in a notebook, I think that a
13 inch is about as large as is conveniently portable, although still
much less than something such as the EEE or the tiny sony things.

I enquired with Dell about a month ago about the M1330 with Ubuntu
preloaded. It seems that they don't supply it any more, instead
favouring the Inspiron 1525. However, that may have changed in the
month since I contacted them.

 Hi Caroline,

I bought this Dell Inspiron 1525 (the basic model) about a month ago.
It came with Gutsy pre-installed. I agree with Mac's comments about
the partitioning: it came with 4 partitions
 1. a click-through license application that only appears the first
 time you boot,
 2. a copy of the Dell-specific Ubuntu ISO image, for re-installing,
 3. the root partition,
 4. the swap partition.

The only minor niggle I've noticed so far is that I can't enable
Compiz. I've only tried once though, and I didn't look for what the
error message was. Other than that, it's a very nice machine.

 Hwyl,
 Neil.

Dell do a couple, the inspiron as mentioned above, and the XPSm1330.
From spending about ten minutes playing with a 1525, they seem to be
much better than the older inspirons, in terms of build quality. Some

I've been very happy with my Dell laptop - solid, reliable, and the

Only thing to mention is that Dell partitions the disk rather
idiosyncratically. If you want a classic partitioning scheme - e.g.
