Re: [ubuntu-uk] graphics problem on Ubuntu 8.04 Dell laptop

2009-01-03 Thread Jai Harrison
I have an Inspiron 1525 and have had no problems with it in terms of
graphics. Just some problems using the second earphone slot in
Intrepid due to a bug with something in Ubuntu (don't know if it's
been reported or how to do so as I'm not sure which program has a
problem).

Anyhow, I could test Penguin Planet Racer on it and report back
(bearing in mind I'm using Intrepid and not Hardy) if you'd like.

The safe graphics comment was specific to using one of the live CDs,
not an install.
I have several machines which work ok with 8.10, for example with the
live CD, however, the display on them does not start at all in normal
live CD mode. The initial boot menu from the Live CD includes (F4 I
think) a choice of using what it calls safe graphics.

My suggestion of live CD was to help to show if the obvious fault the
OP had was hardware or software related. A working live CD would
enable a conclusion that the hardware was ok.

As others have said, try a live CD. Ideally something totally
non-Ubuntu, such as Knoppix.

Also, try connecting it to an external screen.

If it still shows lines or other display corruption, it's a hardware issue.

It's hard to see how a game could cause hardware problems, but I've
seen a couple of laptops recently with fried graphics chips. This
means a new main board, basically - an expensive repair.

I can only imagine that the cooling on the GPU or the Northbridge (if
it has chipset-integrated graphics) might have been inadequate -
perhaps a fan clogged with dust or fluff. In normal desktop use, it
only runs in 2D and never gets loaded. But when running a 3D game for
a while, it would be running flat out, overheat and possibly cook
itself.

Alan C, it was preinstalled by Dell, probably OEM so I doubt that they used
the safe graphics mode. My sister has the same issue regarding Penguin
Racer. I too have disabled Compiz on her laptop which is an Acer (do not the

Not sure, but if you try a live CD maybe 8.04.1 (?) or even 8.10, it
may show that the hardware works ok, maybe choose live CD safe
graphics option?

good luck

[ubuntu-uk] graphics problem on Ubuntu 8.04 Dell laptop

2009-01-02 Thread David King
My girlfriend is running Ubuntu 8.04 on her Dell Inspiron 1525
(preinstalled), but had a few graphics issues recently.
I was playing a game (Penguin Planet Racer) full screen and it crashed
the laptop, could not get out of it other than a hard reboot.
I disabled some of the Compiz effects, in case that was overloading the
graphics chip, which I think is an Intel chip.

Today she said she booted it as normal, and then when she logged in,
there were various small lines on the screen that were never there before.

Is this likely to be a software issue or a hardware problem?

David
