how's novatech as a manufacturer? Want my graphics card from them:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-86GT1.
And just to check, I'm hopeful that this is the correct motherboard:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.jsp?GIG-5CDS3R, although I
was hoping for an nForce one. Could someone pick me a decent one please,
as I really have no idea who makes good hardware etc. Needs to be: about
£100, support DDR2 (and possibly 3), minimum 4GB ram and be socket 775
(Intel).

Thankyou :D

Actually the shiny graphics work on my other half's IBM Thinkpad with a
Celeron M 1.4 and Intel on-board graphics, so I'd say any 3D graphics
card (ATI or NVidia) would happily do the job. I'd think it would be
the same for video editing too (although for Video Editing, Firewire
*might* be useful if you're going to be importing video from a DV video
camera, oh and bags of hard drive space regardless).

You don't need a new motherboard to prove the last bit, just
switch your machine on... that should be enough.

use the shiny graphics on Ubuntu, possibly delve into Video Editing...
and prove to my friends that Linux is better than Windows :P!

Aria still do not have that m/b in stock, so I might get that and the
graphics card from Novatech.

Yup, Gigabyte do make good boards. Bear in mind you can't use DDR2 and
DDR3 memory in the motherboard at once, although as you say it has room
to upgrade when DDR3 memory gets cheaper (you'll just have to either
dump or sell the older DDR2 memory).

What exactly do you want to do with the system?

All x86 PC's all work fine with a generic VGA driver the comes with a
modern OS. That said Ubuntu comes with both the open source NV driver
for Nvidia cards, and the closed source Nvidia driver written by Nvidia,
the manufacturer of the Nvidia chips, so you don't need to download

I'm gonna go with https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics
+Cards/PCI-E/nVIDIA+GeForce+8+Series/nVidia+GeForce+8600GT+1024MB+PCI-E
+?productId=29836, don't think it's got a VGA output though.

Thanks for all the help :D

in the main page for each item (still on Aria), in the technical details
section, iy says what it supports as far as graphics programs; DirectX10
and OpenGL2. Some of them don't have OpenGl listed. Would you think that
as I am running Ubuntu on it, it needs to say OpenGL? Or would it amnage
anyway? For example, this one doesn't have OpenGL on it.

Alternatively, you or someone could just pick me a card :P - under £90,
DDR3, 512MB minimum, at least 1 VGA output, possibly a DVI-I.

Thank you

Re: [ubuntu-uk] pc parts compatibility

2007-12-23 Thread Farran
okay. Also (sorry :P) is DDR3 an issue? I know the m/b has to support
DDR3 to run DDR3 ram (obviously), but does it matter if the graphics
card is GDDR3 and the m/b isn't? I'm restricted from a lot of cards
simply because I declined from DDR3.

Can't comment on the rest, but don't *ever* buy any gear from ECS...

I've built quite a few PCs and ECS motherboards have been nothing but
trouble...

Cheap they may be, with cheap chipsets, cheap components, and poor
bioses... urgh

The K7S5A motherboard springs to mind, try googling it, I honestly ended
up soldering resistors to several of these motherboards to make them
more stable (they still weren't perfect) or they else they just forgot
the time, how much memory they had, that they had USB ports, etc...

Horrid, nasty, cheap bits of junk...

Re: [ubuntu-uk] pc parts compatibility

2007-12-23 Thread Farran
right, back again. Been to Aria, come back with a much cheaper range of
products than Novatech.
I'd appreciate someone older and wiser (I'm only 15 :P) to look over the
components just to check they are compatible with each other and with
Linux:

ECS 650iSLIT-A nForce 650 LGA Socket 775 Motherboard
OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 nVIDIA SLI Approved (2X2GB)
Samsung SH-S203B 20X DVDRW - SATA - Black
Corsair 550W VX Series PSU
320GB Hitachi Deskstar SATA2 16MB
Gigabyte Poseidon Silver
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 95W G0 Stepping (Retail 775)
nVidia GeForce 8400GS 512MB PCI-E

Thanks, but I've done many runs with memtest and the RAM is fine. The
machine just doesn't want to pickup the hdd past the bios stage when
there's more than 2GB of RAM installed (i.e it won't boot from the hdd
and it doesn't get picked up from the live cd). I read on a forum
somewhere that it was a bios issue, but I can't find the post
unfortunately.

Have you run a memory test for a long time - over 12 hours to determine if
the RAM is just plain faulty?

Cheers,

I made the mistake of buying a pre-built system with a Jetway mobo
from Aria a few months back. I can say that while it definately runs
on Ubuntu I wouldn't recommend it. The machine kernel panics about
once a week and I had to take out half the ram just to get it to
recognise the hard drive. The ram problem is bios related and I'm
still waiting to hear back from Aria after a month! Next time I think
I'll go for self build again, seems to be less hassle :/

In spite of this, I would still recommend Aria as a company to buy from.

Yup, Aria are pretty good, I've used them before in the past, as well as

Didn't know that about the Jetway motherboards.

I couldn help but think that it all looked a bit pricey.

I agree to go with aria, it is the best site Ive ever used, and it is SO
cheap!!

Also whats wrong with the on-board sound?

Looks okay to me, you'll probably need the NVidia drivers for the
graphics card.

Just wondering on two things...

1. Why did you choose a seperate sound card (I mean, isn't the onboard
audio sufficient, because the card you've chosen as an extra wouldn't be
much better than the on-board audio - would be different if you went for
a Sound Blaster Audigy or something).

2. Do you plan on upgrading to two video cards in SLI? If not, why
spend the extra for an SLI board? I think you'd probably save yourself
a few quid not going for an SLI board which could be put to a board with
an Intel Chipset.

Quad core CPU should be fine, at least I would have thought so. I would
have thought it would be detected as 4 individual CPUs like a dual core
would be detected as 2 CPUs. I hope thats the case anyway as I'm
considering an upgrade to quad core (although I haven't made my mind up
yet if it's worth the extra money).

Looks like a fairly good setup.

I'm not advertising against novatech, but some of the prices on there are
much more expensive than www.Aria.co.uk, they're based in Manchester and
have some good hardware prices (I'm not associated in any way, but i have

Difficult to tell without specific makes and model numbers to be honest.
That said, the vast majority of hardware these days works just fine with
Linux.

Again, difficult to tell without model numbers.

[ubuntu-uk] pc parts compatibility

2007-12-13 Thread Farran
hi all
building a computer just for personal use, selected all the parts form
novatech:
Hard Drive
Motherboard Bundle
Graphics Card
Optical Drive
Sound Card
Keyboard
Mouse
This costs £621.47.

Wondered if anyone has used these parts or knows whether they work with
Linux - a friend reminded me that some of the newer hardware won't work,
for example, the quad core processor maybe?
If any of these wouldn't be best and you have a better choice, please
