Hi Mark,

Thanks so much - it certainly did help.
Apparently I had to force the upgrade to Alsa 1.0.23 and all is well now
... almost :)
How do I make Skype use Alsa instead of PulseAudio? - there's no option
to change that in Skype audio devices properties, i.e. only PulseAudio
is listed. And all my business contacts are on skype :(

[ubuntu-uk] Sound problem in Sony Vaio VPCEC1S1E

2010-06-01 Thread DaveGK
Does anyone know how to fix the sound problem in Sony Vaio VPCEC1S1E?
I've installed the backport alsa generic and can also see backport alsa
specific for my kernel, but still no sound. Ubuntu Lucid 64-bit.

Any help will be greatly appreciated - only have a couple of days before
I have to either keep or return this laptop.

Generally, this happens when an application which doesn't know about
alsa/dmix/pulse/whatever system you're using takes over the sound card and
keeps
the sound card open. This means that no other application can output to the
sound card, which was a major issue in linux previously, and is the reason why
alsa/dmix/pulse/arts/etc were invented.

Personally, I find that flash is the biggest culprit in this.

Try closing a few applications, and when your sound starts working again, this
is the app that's causing the problems. If it has sound configuration options,
play with those (use alsa or pulse if available - don't use OSS - that's what
causes the issues!) and see if you can find a configuration that stops this
happening!

I have experienced the sound disappearing from all my ubuntu intrepid
systems. not sure why. i followed the tutorial here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578
which fixed it.

its not that i don't know linux. just was in a hurry.

Next time the soundcard is locked, run this in Terminal:

 sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

It will list the applications currently using the sound. Paste the
output here, and we may be able to help out.

Matthew.

With my 8.10, under Fusion 2 on a Mac, the sound disconnects itself when
I start up. I reset the settings but it just disconnects on the next
startup.

Sound on 8.04 is fine, same Fusion 2.

[ubuntu-uk] sound problem

2008-12-27 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

Under ubuntu 8.10 running gnome and amarok media player I have just lost
my sound, it was playing then just stopped. but amarok indicates the
song is stil playing but I can't hear anything (no i have not muted
it), if I then exit and reload amarok i get the following

Audio output unavailable; the device is busy.
xine parameters:

any idea what this means, or could point to?

I get sound back if i log out then back in again, i have googled this
and changed my sound to alsa, but it's still happening.

Thanks

[ubuntu-uk] Sound problem with Skype.

2007-03-30 Thread Erik Jakobsen
Hi.

I have installed Ubuntu 7.04, Feisty Fawn.

I also have installed Skype 1.3.0.53_API.

I can hear the Skype testcenter, and I can hear myself speaking in the
michrophone.
But I cannot hear myself when the link changes, and where I should hear
myself from the Skype testcenter.

I use the onboard AC97 sound card, and it is also selcted when I look
into the tools>option>sound devices.

If I selecet System>Preferences>sound, all the tests are being ok.

What could be the reason for the culprit ?
