If it helps, I've had an old Dell P3 desktop running on a 19" widescreen
LCD monitor and that happily supported the native resolution (I believe
it was something like 1440x900). That was with a very old on-board
Intel chipset and 8 Meg of video memory. This was also detected at boot
without any problems.

In XP, if you have the monitor set to Plug and Play monitor, it should
detect the changes and allow you to specify a higher resolution,
although in some cases the monitors come with a driver CD for Windows
anyway.

Everybody saying it’s not a problem will probably jinx it but, even the
VESA driver can be persuaded to use widescreens as long as the resolution
isn’t too high. XP on the other hand...

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Monitor Resolution Question

2009-12-06 Thread Matthew Holder
Hi Nige,

Your new monitor should report the maximum resolution it can display.
XUbuntu will read this, and then you will be able to pick this
resolution from one of the GUI tools. In my experience, Ubuntu has
always picked the maximum resolution when it boots, and I havent had
to change it myself.

I suspect with XP you will need to install a new driver, although this
is outside the scope of this mailing list...

Cheers, Matt

Unless the system is very old, it should be fine. The reason that the
maximum available resolution is 1024*768 is that you have a LCD
monitor that won't work well in another resolution. Plug in the new
monitor and it should just work.
