I have been considering doing this for a while and have some random notes typed
up on my
personal wiki.

The guidelines *I* was going to work to are:-

http://popey.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?VideoDemos/GeneralGuidelines

If that helps.

That's a really good idea. Putting it on DVD means you can include
guides for connecting to the internet etc. too (which would be
rendered pretty useless by a duff connection). Some people are
probably more comfortable watching a guide than using wikis/forums
etc. (i.e. less computer literate).

Do we need guidelines for consistency or just let them evolve with practise?

That video is great, something like would certainly make things easier
for the users if they can see it being done rather than just reading
it. Would it be possible to convert the video into MPEG2 format?

What I am thinking is if we got a whole load of instructional video
clips together we could make an Ubuntu tutorial DVD. Since DVDs are
getting cheaper and more people have access to broadband maybe this
could be put up for download and distribution to new Ubuntu users with a
copy of the Ubuntu Live CD?

Hope this makes sense.

Yup.

Not sure it makes sense when all the GUI is in English though.

But yes, you could (for example) make an audio recording (in the same way I do)
of the same
length then just use the script to replace the audio track with yours. No probs.

It would be if they request the source which as far as I know from irc
is audacity audio and the screencast .ogg put together in unison

Will it be possible to amend the Audio channels to enable Loco Teams to

This is something I've wanted to do for a long while but some of the

Can someone do a couple of open office impress slide for us?

One that basically says who we are and some URLs, logos and suchlike. It needs
to leave room for
the Subject of the talk, the name of the person who made the talk and their own
email and/or
website details.

If someone could create something then whoever creates a screencast can record
an ogg of say 10
seconds of each, one for the start, and one for the end of the video.

I am thinking some kind of creative commons licence would be appropriate also.

Anyone fancy that?

Cheers,
Al.

1. The ubuntu UK team meet and decide that screen casts will be a
benefit to show new users around
2. we discuss the issues and alan and others take time to work out
what can be done
3. a video is produced ( well done President Pope )
4. new users watch it and benefit from it.
5. we can see the effective workings of a community idea
6. someone write it up ( baggsy ! ) and someone posts a small fridge
article ( Mr Sladen , can anyone post to the fridge ? )

Or in otherwords

Awesome!

That worked then :)

Thanks very much.

Yes.

For example in one terminal I type this:-

$ qemu -hda edgyxchat.qcow -net nic -net user -m 512 -soundhw all

Then, once it's running elsewhere I run xwininfo and then when prompted
click on the qemu window. This is the result:-

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xwininfo

xwininfo: Please select the window about which you
would like information by clicking the
  mouse in that window.

xwininfo: Window id: 0x323 "QEMU"

  Absolute upper-left X: 651
  Absolute upper-left Y: 51
  Relative upper-left X: 5
  Relative upper-left Y: 24
  Width: 1024
  Height: 768
  Depth: 24
  Visual Class: DirectColor
  Border width: 0
  Class: InputOutput

  Bit Gravity State: ForgetGravity
  Window Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
  Backing Store State: NotUseful

  Override Redirect State: no
  Corners: +651+51 -5+51 -5-231 +651-231
  -geometry 1024x768-0+27

Then I run recordmydesktop like this:-

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ recordmydesktop --nosound -windowid 0x323
Initial recording window is set to:
X:651 Y:51Width:1024Height:768
Adjusted recording window is set to:
X:650 Y:50Width:1024Height:768
Initializing...
Capturing!

At this point it's now recording. I go to the qemu window (or indeed whatever
window I am
recording) and do the demo. When finished I flick back to the recordmydesktop
window and hit
CTRL+C and this happens..

Done.
Written 96797 bytes
(96797 of which were video data and 0 audio data)

Shutting down..
Goodbye!
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Job done.

> > * Run recordmydesktop specifying the option to NOT record audio.

In a nutshell, the latter. I find it hard enough to steer the mouse, take in
all the
dialogs, think about what I'm going to say without the extra hassle of actually
saying it.

When I later recorded the audio I made numerous mistakes. So the ability to
edit the audio in a
simple audio editor like audacity, or in my case, just restart recording again,
was beneficial.
Given the lack of decent video editors on Linux I figured this would be a
prudent decision.

Don't get me wrong though, I am not saying the audio has to be perfect, but it
certainly helps
to be understood if you're not "uhm"-ing and "ahhm"-ing all the time whilst
recording.

Cheers,
Al.

That was most instructive and what an excellent way to demonstrate how
to do things with Ubuntu. I do hope someone could use the technique to
make other instructive videos such as use of the terminal.

Thanks for the lesson.

Is that because the sound recording int recordmy desktop is poor or is
it a human interaction thing?
