Harsh. Some questions are not easy to answer right now, a year before
we predict these things will hit the shelves. For example if we commit
to a straight yes/no in answer to things like will I have root
access then it will come back to bite us in 6 months if some phone
vendor or software partner decides that's not going to be the case for
 whatever reason.

Yes, maybe it's a bit harsh, sorry. And I do understand that he can't
answer everything right now but if that's the case, there's no problem
in saying so rather than providing an answer that doesn't address the
actual question. Regardless, it was a very interesting interview.

Brilliant! I corrected a few typo and updated the answer about the
emulator based on a comment from Michael Hall in G+ yesterday.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu operating system comes to Android smartphones

2013-01-03 Thread Simon Greenwood
The concept for Ubuntu on Android is essentially an Android phone with an
Ubuntu disk image stored on SD card/in memory that allows the phone to be
used as a boot device for a PC based system.

Ubuntu OS for phones is an ARM based distribution of Ubuntu that is
designed to run a phone - in the first instance dual core A9 processors
such as the Google Nexus 4, which from reports appears to be the reference
model. It's unlikely that it will run on a Samsung Galaxy S3 for various
reasons and as yet there are no companies even planning to offer a phone
running the OS or Ubuntu for Android: getting a new OS onto a phone isn't
as simple as with a PC or laptop. After that there will be similar issues
with getting phone companies behind the new OS - the reason that Google are
selling the Nexus 4 directly and unlocked is that they had difficulty in
getting the US carriers to accept it, so they decided to go around them.

There is a 20 minute video by SABDFL here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone which is well worth making time to
watch. He says that any phone which runs the Android kernel will run the
Ubuntu kernel.

I also have a Samsung Galazy S3 Android phone and will be very reluctant to
upgrade it to Ubuntu as it is a top of the range item unless there is a
thoroughly tried, tested and proven upgrade path to take.

not really, it was demonstrated on a Motorola Atrix that had
virtualisation built in and a webtop operating system running in the VM
which was swapped out for Ubuntu. The Ubuntu image is an ARM image that
is running on the phone processor alongside the android bit, with a
hypervisor sorting them out. It had a docking station with USB and HDMI
out so could drive a monitor from the phone directly. No PC involved.

Ah, that's very interesting - the customer site doesn't go into much detail
about the technology. I didn't even know the Atrix ran like that - quite
fancied one of those but they weren't taken up much in the UK and I believe
Motorola have killed off the line now.

1. I was using the new Gmail reply interface that doesn't seem to allow
bottom quoting any more, wasn't sure if it did so I've switched it off.

2. I couldn't see anything that explains how Ubuntu for Android actually
works on the Ubuntu website apart from 'sharing the same kernel' and I'm
pleased to be corrected.
