You don't need to do it in the terminal, you can use synaptic if you
wish.

It doesn't really matter which way round you do it.

I would downgrade to Java 5. I have had issues with various apps
(inlcuding Miro) with Java 6.

Install sun-java5-bin sun-java5-jre and sun-java5-plugins and remove
sun-java6-bin, sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-plugin.
