Tell that to the Ubuntu Mozilla Team.

Grant,

I totally forgot about symbolic linking, it was frustrating to have
Firefox3.0 keep opening up on me when I clicked a link.

Thanks!
Joe

2009-07-05 Thread Robert Wall
Looks like 3.5 final got published to karmic and jaunty-proposed
simultaneously yesterday, and the karmic package is working out well for
me, so hopefully it doesn't have any major bugs and won't be in
jaunty-proposed for too long :)

Indeed. I think the proposed repository actually has fewer testers than
development releases these days, so stuff occasionally goes crazy in
there. I've had more problems with -proposed than with using Ubuntu
alpha versions, so... yeah. Don't use -proposed unless you like broken
things.

For anyone wondering exactly what version each official repo has right
now, https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.5 is the place to
look.

Happy 4th of July, everyone!

Yes, they do. Jaunty universe has 3.5 beta. This is the *only*
recommended method. There's *no* reason to install it from a PPA in
jaunty. The beta will be updated to the final sometime soon, which is
the -proposed package finally going through the testing process and
being accepted into -updates.

So, redact what was previously recommended; the only officially
suggested method is to install firefox-3.5 from universe, which will be
updated to the final sometime soon (final is in -proposed, once that
package is finished testing, it'll be moved to -updates).

Just as an aside/disclaimer for those who don't know (since we get this
a lot): *-proposed is NOT meant for general human consumption (so don't
enable it as a repository). It's a staging area for packages that
haven't been tested (sometimes problems slip through the first round of
checks), and isn't even always internally consistent--sometimes packages
from -proposed depend on versions that haven't made their way into
-proposed yet. The latter is by far the most common. Enabling it gives
you only a slight peek into the future of -updates, and really is more
trouble than it's worth.

To summarize: Install firefox-3.5 in universe and wait for the final to
come down the pipe (and don't enable -proposed, higher version numbers
aren't always better!)

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu Talking Point: Firefox 3.5

2009-07-04 Thread Grant Bowman
Unfortunately, the official Ubuntu archives don't have FireFox 3.5
yet. I just talked with asac in #ubuntu-mozillateam to get his and
the team's recommendation. So, as of today the best way to get Jaunty
FF 3.5 is to add a Personal Package Archive (PPA) as described in
asac's blog post.

http://www.ubuntusolutions.org/2009/07/ubuntu-firefox-3-5-install-use-ubuntu-mozilla-security.html

For command line folks, this means:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 7EBC211F
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa/ubuntu jaunty
main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5 firefox-3.5-gnome-support

to set 3.5 as the system default: [1]

cd /usr/bin
sudo ln -sf firefox-3.5 firefox

There are a couple other ways to get it as well. The daily build PPA
has more cutting edge packages but is less stable. FF 3.5 is also
available as a jaunty-proposed package but I don't recommend this way.
Of course one can also get the software directly from
www.getfirefox.com but you are on your own then. You won't be able to
take advantage of the automatic updates, integration work and testing
efforts that go into the packaged versions (and later security
updates) that get delivered automatically.

I hope this helps.
