Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour for 11.04.22

2022-11-05 Thread Cody Smith
Like I said yesterday, it's a 3rd party kernel module that has to be
installed, It is in the Ubuntu universe repo, but it's a dkms module, so
you'll likely have to manually grab the packages for that as well as the
module.

Here's the module:
https://ubuntu.osuosl.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/r/rtl8821ce/rtl8821ce-dkms_5.5.2.1-0ubuntu10_all.deb

I'm sure it's in whatever ubuntu mirror you prefer as well, I just pulled
the link from OSU OSL, since that's pretty close to Salem comparatively,
since it's at Oregon State University.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour for 11.04.22

2022-11-04 Thread Cody Smith
That's fine.

As to your new laptop, if it's just networking that's not operational, it's
likely because the network chip it uses doesn't have an in tree modules
from what I could find on Google, since it looks like it's a Realtek chip
(those are super hot or miss when it comes to having in tree modules,
usually requiring a dkms module to function)

This thread details it nicely:

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Very Quiet Here ?

2022-04-07 Thread Cody Smith
I agree with your sentiment that Ubuntu Oregon seems dead (for a good while
me, Phil and jvlb we're one of the few people active), and a still current
world event that started around 2 years ago had me stop hosting Ubuntu
Hours here in Salem.

I'm hoping I can restart those here in the near future, I'm still weighing
how safe that is.

Is be up for helping where I can to jumpstart the LoCo

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour... well maybe.

2020-09-17 Thread Cody Smith
Unfortunately there's as of yet no way I can make it, nor am I cleared to
go, too risky, and if I caught it, it'd be a death sentence to 2 of my
housemates, being as they're elderly. Plus the smoke has me playing it
extremely safe.

manually fix it on a shoestring budget, or simply get rid of it.

[Ubuntu Oregon] About next Ubuntu Hour

2018-12-18 Thread Cody Smith
So was the plan to skip this week's Ubuntu Hour being as it's so close to
the holidays? I likely won't be with a laptop either way until well into
January (had to RMA it, it was worse than anyone at the electronics club
thought. motherboard had a hole burnt into it, so lost cause and if I can't
get it repaired under warranty, I'm gonna have to replace it as to repair
it locally would cost more than I paid for it for the motherboard alone,
and that's if nothing else is toast).

So what's the call? No Ubuntu Hour this week and pick up after New Years,
or should I send that email out?

the above email, but in my head it's at least tangentially related. I
figure we should start getting the ball rolling now.

I'll definitely be able to make it next week. Keep us posted on what comes
of that conference room, phil!

Che, it'd be nice to see ya there, but don't feel you have to cancel other
plans that are likely more important just for this. This will be going on
for the foreseeable future.

There should be decent talk of tech with who will be at Broadway Commons.
That's usually something that anyone can count on with even 2 people there.

2017-04-19 Thread Cody Smith
Come on down to Broadway Commons in Salem for talk about tech, open source,
free software and whatever else might come up! And feel free to pick
people's brains about software you're having trouble with (hopefully free
software, but we don't judge!), The location will be 1300 Broadway in
Salem, venue is Broadway Commons Coffeehouse. The time? that's from 6-7PM
this coming Friday!

Event page, please register as apparently there is still paperwork done
about that:

To be quite honest, I just bought a new motherboard and a 6300, so I'm not
gonna rush out and make the stuff I bought useless anytime soon, besides,
the Piledriver line is still solid, and you need a 4.10 kernel just to use
SOME of the new features, AMD dropped the ball and didn't give specs to the
kernel devs.

Here in Salem not too bad, but I keep wondering if this entire region was

Also, Che, think you'll make it to the Ubuntu Hour next week? With any
luck I'll be there with whatever distro I'm running at that time.

It's looking like it's for sure I won't be there, meeting just finished up,
went to prep my laptop for boot, and grub complains about the partitions
not being present (something I can fix, but it'll take more time than I
have if I were attending), and I think that laptop just had it's partition
table go corrupt. somewhat easily fixable, but like I said, time consuming.

Note to self: don't have 15 tabs open in Firefox with one being music in
Youtube, several being for wiki pages for the distro I'm using, and 3 for
the original email and the related pages in this thread, I was listening to
Disturbed, and copied the wrong tab's link, that's where that video came
from. I intended that link to be the LoCo event page. XD

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu hour.

2016-08-04 Thread Cody Smith
kinda broke (not even enough to pay for something cheap at Broadway
Commons) aside from bills for next month, plus I've got several pressing PC
issues I'd like to hammer out tomorrow, pretty minor, but if I don't work
on them, it'll bug the hell outta me. >.<. so I'll prolly see y'all next

2016-06-15 Thread Cody Smith
I'll try and make it, sadly I missed the only bus there last time that
arrived in decent time and didn't want to wait around in the heat for a
half hour only to get there to stay 15 minutes before leaving. Now I know
when not to start walking to the stop.

On the topic of LFNW, I might be making it next year (trying to get plans
in place for that) and if I do make it, hopefully I can meet up with some
of y'all.

as for a Ubuntu Oregon LoCo telegram group, definitely something I'd be all
for. it'd give me yet another thing to do besides IRC, Ingress and FB. XD

[Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour TOMORROW

2016-03-19 Thread Cody Smith
Come by Broadway commons tomorrow, Friday the 18th at 6PM to enjoy talk
about Ubuntu, tech and whatever else comes up! but please, buy at least a
drink from Broadway Coffeehouse (it's a restriction they pose on all guests
using their space).

The address is 1300 Broadway NE, Salem, OR.

Please register with this page even if you MIGHT attend, it helps the LoCo
team and council above them know who attends what, it also has a nice map
indicating where Broadway Commons is using Google Maps:
