I'm sending this here just in case someone wants a side project to work on
for the good of the city. We don't have the resources or time to work on
this but I wanted to pass this along here just in case. I also recommended
she take a look at making this a Capstone project. Feel free to contact her
directly about it.

Cheers-

 Hi Lance,

How are you? I know this email is a bit random -- you and I met at a
Corvallis Beer and Blog from long while ago. At the time, I was working at
OSU, but have since taken a job with the Corvallis-Benton County Public
Library <http://www.cbcpl.net/>. The CBCPL looking to improve our library
catalog <http://library.ci.corvallis.or.us/newcatalog/> via an open source
project, and I thought of you and the OSU OSL as an organization that might
be able to help (or at least point us in the direction of some folks who
might be interested in helping us).

We're a mid-sized library, and we have a lot of support from the community,
serving over 85,000 people in Benton County. We have branch libraries in
Monroe, Alsea and Philomath. We are forward-thinking, want to do big things
and are big fans of open source.

As I mentioned, we're looking to improve our library catalog. A few of my
colleagues (Charles Dunham and Andrew Cherbas) have been researching an
open source layer called VuFind <http://vufind.org/about.php>. It's the
difference between a really plain looking
catalog<http://library.ci.corvallis.or.us:8083/#section=resource&resourceid=4923742&currentIndex=0>and
one that is more
interactive<http://catalog.douglascountylibraries.org/Record/862902/Home?searchId=13702291&recordIndex=5&page=1>,
like Douglas County Library <http://douglascountylibraries.org/>'s catalog.
<http://vufind.org/wiki/installation_status>

More importantly, it has the capacity to
<http://vufind.org/wiki/installation_status>unify collections from
different sources. Our method of including ebooks in our current library
catalog is a hack; It’s rarely up-to-date and one has to click through to a
separate website to check availability and so forth. Our ebook vendor will
be releasing an API soon, which would enable us to integrate their ebooks
in to a VuFind catalog. As we add new digital collections in the future, we
would hope to integrate them as well.

We’ve looked into this in a very preliminary way so far, but it seems that
getting this to work would require:****

   - Writing an ILS driver <http://vufind.org/wiki/building_an_ils_driver>in
PHP for VuFind, so it can communicate with our Integrated Library System.
Our ILS is called TLC. Though many libraries have implemented
VuFind<http://vufind.org/wiki/installation_status>,
no one has yet created a driver for TLC.****
   - Customizing the VuFind interface to meet our needs, and branding it
   for the Library.****
   - Integrating our
Library2Go<http://library2go.lib.overdrive.com/0482A927-9C05-4885-80C2-5057619AA549/10/438/en/Default.htm>ebook
collection in to VuFind using an API.
   ****

I read about the OSL's mission and Public Sector Program and was wondering
if any of your students (or anyone else, for that matter) would be
interested in possibly helping us create code to implement VuFind as our
library catalog? Once installed, we would support and update VuFund
ourselves; we just lack the expertise for an initial implementation.

This would be a wonderful service for the greater Corvallis community with
a long-lasting, positive effect. Do you have any thoughts on where we might
find the expertise to make this happen? Unfortunately, we have very limited
budget, but we’re hoping we can find someone who would like to do this for
fun or to gain experience.

Thanks for your time and any advice you can share. We really hope we can
find someone to help us!
Sincerely,
Lindy (and Charles)****
