Please refer to the discussions we had on #ubuntu-devel about linux- firmware originally before putting it in main: http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2008/10/14/%23ubuntu-devel.html Just to be clear, that discussion was before we knew that there were some problems with copyright/licensing statements on objects in linux- firmware. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367309] Re: [i945GM] xrandr backlight control is bizarre on Macbook
I've deleted the references to the brightness-button problems I could not reproduce in Karmic. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel - I'm using Jaunty on a second-generation Macbook (Macbook2,1 in Apple - parlance) with an Intel 945GM graphics chip. Since at least Intrepid, - I've had a strange and puzzling behaviour with the backlight keys. - Tonight I tried upgrading to version 2.7 of the Intel driver from the - x-updates PPA in the vain hope it might resolve the issue, but since it - didn't I sat down and took a good hard look at the problem. + I'm currently using Jaunty on a second-generation Macbook (Macbook2,1 + in Apple parlance) with an Intel 945GM graphics chip, and have + reproduced this issue on Karmic Alpha 2. I tried switching to each of the available BACKLIGHT_CONTROL methods with xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL $method, then checked the available range with xrandr --prop and tried a selection of brightness settings with xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT $value When I run xrandr --prop the default BACKLIGHT_CONTROL value is native, whose range of backlight values is the unusual range 0..296. These numbers map to brightnesses as follows: - Even numbers from 0 to 40 turn off the backlight. - Even numbers from 42 to 296 uniformly increase the brightness to full strength. - Odd numbers from 1 to 253 uniformly decrease the brightness from full to very dim. - Odd numbers greater than or equal to 255 turn off the backlight. The end result is that trying to change the brightness with F1 and F2 involves mashing one or the other until you get a brightness level you're willing to put up with and hope that nothing changes it. The legacy BACKLIGHT_CONTROL method has a range of 0..255, where every value produces the same mid-level brightness. The combination BACKLIGHT_CONTROL has a range of 0..148, half the range of the native method, and it behaves like half the native method too: - Numbers from 0 to 20 turn off the backlight. - Numbers from 21 to 148 uniformly increase the brightness from very dim to full strength. The kernel BACKLIGHT_CONTROL has a range of 0..0. Setting the backlight value to '0' produces no obvious effect (if the backlight was on, it stays on; if the backlight was off it stays off) - A side note: when I first play with the keyboard brightness buttons, - they followed the chaotic behaviour of the default, native - BACKLIGHT_CONTROL above. Now that I've been messing with the - BACKLIGHT_CONTROL value, the brightness buttons control a smooth - gradient from 'very dim' to 'full strength' regardless of the - BACKLIGHT_CONTROL, although I can't actually turn the backlight off with - the keys. I'll ascribe that to some GNOME feature being clever, and - ignore it until the underlying xrandr feature is fixed. - I would be happy if the Intel driver defaulted to combination BACKLIGHT_CONTROL on my hardware, since at least that works in a predictable and useful fashion. However, certain patterns make me suspect there's some underlying problem to be fixed - like the fact that the total 'lit' range in 'combination' mode is 127 brightness levels, which seems a far more likely range than 148. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383907] Ooooops Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in memcpy()
A rather major ooops for this version: logout causes severe trouble for gdm, which eventually tries to make an X screen in low resolution mode (which does not hit my laptop screen). Killing all X and gdm processes does not fix things, the same happens again after /etc/init.d/gdm start. Timing seems to have changed in 185.18.14, it may be that gdm is proceeding when the driver is not yet ready. The Nvidia splash symbol appears, very briefly. I will stick to this version anyway - who needs logout when suspend/hibernate both work? Rgds, Jon Eliot Jon Eliot wrote: This seems to be a successful bugfix. Twinview (laptop screen and external screen via docking station) does NOT work using v180 driver. I can display one screen or the other, but I cannot turn on both together. Screen sizes indicate a full twinview screen (double width), and the working screen may scroll across to show the whole space, but the second monitor does not turn on. If I delete xorg.conf, both screens will turn on and mirror each other, but as soon as I try twinview, one or the other will turn off (depending on the last screen enabled). If I roll the driver back to v177, everything works as it did when I first set it up. This is what I am currently running. I can certainly survive using 177 (not sure what 180 brings to the party). Just thought I should mention it to someone... xorg.conf dump: - # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeis...@builder58) Wed Oct 1 15:12:53 PDT 2008 # nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings # nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (bui...@yellow) Thu Jun 5 09:27:12 UTC 2008 # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page. # (Type man xorg.conf at the shell prompt.) # # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg # package. # # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated # again, run the following command: # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg Section Monitor Identifier Configured Monitor EndSection Section Monitor Identifier Monitor0 VendorName Unknown ModelName DELL E248WFP HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0 EndSection Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Device Configured Video Device MonitorConfigured Monitor DefaultDepth24 EndSection Section Screen Identifier Screen0 Device Videocard0 MonitorMonitor0 DefaultDepth24 Option TwinView 1 Option TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder DFP-0 Option metamodes CRT: nvidia-auto-select +1920+0, DFP-0: nvidia-auto-select +0+0 SubSection Display Depth 24 Modes nvidia-auto-select EndSubSection EndSection Section Module Load glx EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Generic Keyboard Driver kbd Option XkbRules xorg Option XkbModel pc105 Option XkbLayout us EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Configured Mouse Driver mouse Option CorePointer EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Synaptics Touchpad Driver synaptics Option SendCoreEvents true Option Device /dev/psaux Option Protocol auto-dev Option HorizEdgeScroll 0 Option MinSpeed 0.7 Option MaxSpeed 3 Option AccelFactor 0.03 EndSection Section ServerLayout Identifier Default Layout Screen 0 Screen0 0 0 InputDeviceGeneric Keyboard CoreKeyboard InputDeviceConfigured Mouse InputDeviceSynaptics Touchpad EndSection Section

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a regular (non-security) bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 337243] Re: [g33] X.org crash on Intel 82G33/G31 (with stacktrace)
On karmic, X hung when I tried to open SystemPreferencesScreensaver. The backtrace looks very different (attached). Also, gdb now hangs when I try to continue after getting a backtrace - before I could continue but reattaching would show the stack hadn't changed. The last line of the logfile (referring to detaching) only happened when I did sudo killall gdb from another terminal. Once the hang occurs, killing and restarting Xorg (and gdm) does not restore the hardware to a working state (I get a black screen). Only a reboot does the trick. This was also the case on jaunty, but for the record not on intrepid which I was running when I originally filed the bug. I nearly said this was repeatable, because it happened the first two times I tried it. But sadly on the third there was no problem. Lastly, I have never seen a crash or hang so far while compiz is disabled. ** Attachment added: x-hang-karmic http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28556256/x-hang-karmic -- [g33] X.org crash on Intel 82G33/G31 (with stacktrace) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/337243 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 375618] Re: does not pass xkb* settings to xorg server
This bug was fixed in the package xorg - 1:7.4+3ubuntu4 --- xorg (1:7.4+3ubuntu4) karmic; urgency=low * debian/local/debian-x11-keymap.fdi: Do not check for existing input.xkb.layout property; this was only set by the previous 10-keymap.fdi, which got disabled together with hal-setup-keymap. Directly check for input.keys capabilities, to make the fdi independent. This restores proper X.org keyboard layout setting from console-setup. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301299] Re: [i855] Video playback problem with 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV and compiz after upgrade to Intrepid
Tried the alpha livecd. it works even worse. Haven't had the time to do more than testing with gstreamer-properties, but now the entire window flickers between the old behaviour and disappearing completely. Even the window decoration is missing most of the time. Moving makes it appears (only sometimes and it requires either to guess where the titlebar is or draging with alt), but as soon as anything else is moved, it disappears. I will post more details once I have the time to test more.
