[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 223212] Re: Non-free files distributed without license/copyright info

2009-06-30 Thread Martin Pitt
Wade, moving l-firmware to main or restricted does not make it any more
or less illegal.

Can we move the dependency on linux-firmware from linux-image-generic to
linux (which is already in restricted), and move linux-firmware to
restricted? Then everything would have a suitable component, without
breaking the ogre model.

Although you don't write it explicitly, I assume that after the reboot,

Yes it did.

From your explanation I understand that I wait to test karmik until we
get news from upstream.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 393766] [NEW] Mouse pointer render artifacts ATI Dual Display

2009-06-30 Thread ErMejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

With an ATI dual display configuration (default jaunty drivers), the
mouse point shows rendering artifacts.

I tried it on two different systems, and the bug exists in both:

Linux desktop 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200
Series]

Linux laptop 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M64-S [Mobility Radeon
X2300]

The problem seems to be solved in the Alpha 2 of Karmic Koala with this
configuration:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.30-8-generic #9-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 3 15:23:55 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M64-S [Mobility Radeon

This is a repost, as requested of bug 349367

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 223212] Re: Non-free files distributed without license/copyright info

2009-06-30 Thread Colin Watson
Please refer to the discussions we had on #ubuntu-devel about linux-
firmware originally before putting it in main:

  http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2008/10/14/%23ubuntu-devel.html

Just to be clear, that discussion was before we knew that there were
some problems with copyright/licensing statements on objects in linux-
firmware. Nevertheless, the arguments there still make sense. Rather
than moving all of linux-firmware to restricted, the questionable parts
need to be fixed or removed.

find out what was wrong, but it seems as if the resolution settings for the two

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367309] Re: [i945GM] xrandr backlight control is bizarre on Macbook

2009-06-30 Thread Tim Allen
I've deleted the references to the brightness-button problems I could
not reproduce in Karmic.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

- I'm using Jaunty on a second-generation Macbook (Macbook2,1 in Apple
- parlance) with an Intel 945GM graphics chip. Since at least Intrepid,
- I've had a strange and puzzling behaviour with the backlight keys.
- Tonight I tried upgrading to version 2.7 of the Intel driver from the
- x-updates PPA in the vain hope it might resolve the issue, but since it
- didn't I sat down and took a good hard look at the problem.
+ I'm currently using Jaunty on a second-generation Macbook (Macbook2,1
+ in Apple parlance) with an Intel 945GM graphics chip, and have
+ reproduced this issue on Karmic Alpha 2.

I tried switching to each of the available BACKLIGHT_CONTROL methods
with xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL $method, then
checked the available range with xrandr --prop and tried a selection
of brightness settings with xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT
  $value

When I run xrandr --prop the default BACKLIGHT_CONTROL value is
native, whose range of backlight values is the unusual range 0..296.
These numbers map to brightnesses as follows:

   - Even numbers from 0 to 40 turn off the backlight.
   - Even numbers from 42 to 296 uniformly increase the brightness to full
strength.
   - Odd numbers from 1 to 253 uniformly decrease the brightness from full to
very dim.
   - Odd numbers greater than or equal to 255 turn off the backlight.

The end result is that trying to change the brightness with F1 and F2
involves mashing one or the other until you get a brightness level
you're willing to put up with and hope that nothing changes it.

The legacy BACKLIGHT_CONTROL method has a range of 0..255, where every
value produces the same mid-level brightness.

The combination BACKLIGHT_CONTROL has a range of 0..148, half the range of
the native method, and it behaves like half the native method too:
   - Numbers from 0 to 20 turn off the backlight.
   - Numbers from 21 to 148 uniformly increase the brightness from very dim to
full strength.

The kernel BACKLIGHT_CONTROL has a range of 0..0. Setting the
backlight value to '0' produces no obvious effect (if the backlight was
on, it stays on; if the backlight was off it stays off)

- A side note: when I first play with the keyboard brightness buttons,
- they followed the chaotic behaviour of the default, native
- BACKLIGHT_CONTROL above. Now that I've been messing with the
- BACKLIGHT_CONTROL value, the brightness buttons control a smooth
- gradient from 'very dim' to 'full strength' regardless of the
- BACKLIGHT_CONTROL, although I can't actually turn the backlight off with
- the keys. I'll ascribe that to some GNOME feature being clever, and
- ignore it until the underlying xrandr feature is fixed.
-
I would be happy if the Intel driver defaulted to combination
BACKLIGHT_CONTROL on my hardware, since at least that works in a
predictable and useful fashion. However, certain patterns make me
suspect there's some underlying problem to be fixed - like the fact that
the total 'lit' range in 'combination' mode is 127 brightness levels,
which seems a far more likely range than 148.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383907] Ooooops Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in memcpy()

2009-06-30 Thread Jon Eliot
A rather major ooops for this version: logout causes severe trouble for
gdm, which eventually tries to make an X screen in low resolution mode
(which does not hit my laptop screen).
Killing all X and gdm processes does not fix things, the same happens
again after /etc/init.d/gdm start.

Timing seems to have changed in 185.18.14, it may be that gdm is
proceeding when the driver is not yet ready. The Nvidia splash symbol
appears, very briefly.

I will stick to this version anyway - who needs logout when
suspend/hibernate both work?

Rgds, Jon Eliot

Jon Eliot wrote:

Compiz and, more importantly, the OS, survive without any apparent

 stable version ever. Thank you!

Several fixes in this version look interesting. There is a suspend crash

BrianS - Instructions are provided from the Read about installing
link, accessible from the link that Bryce provided.

Anyway, the white screen issue still exists in the Nvidia drivers. It
can be worked around slightly by enabling unredirect fullscreen
windows in Compiz, so I'm not sure if that should be default.

However, even with that option enabled, any new windows that appear on
the inactive screen will appear as empty white boxes when you make that
screen active again. That's a known long-standing issue with the nvidia
drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 63618] Re: atheros laptop LED not activated

2009-06-30 Thread Christiansen
@Leann Ogasawara

Only change with the new lbm_cw_mac80211 module and kernel 2.6.28-13,
was that I can't even get a connection with ath5k now. And still no led
activity when the connection is in progress. nm-tool do list all
broadcasting SSID's, so the card and driver is alive.

How was it testet:
I reinstalled a box, applied all updates as of 30.06.09 from main including
kernel 2.6.28-13-generic. (sudo apt-get update | apt-get dist-upgrade).
Installed linux-backports-modules-jaunty (2.6.28-13 generic) and rebooted. The
ahteros modules now loaded was:
m...@32bit:~$ lsmod | grep -i ath
ath5k 126468 0
lbm_cw_mac80211 227492 1 ath5k
lbm_cw_cfg8021173760 2 ath5k,lbm_cw_mac80211
led_class 12036 2 ath5k,thinkpad_acpi

BTW Reverting to ath_pci by blacklisting the ath5 module and adding the
dev.wifi0.ledpin=1 I was able to connect.
(Seems an other LP bug #338745 for Easy Peasy is a similar problem for Atheros
AR242x chipset, and where a fix has been comittet).

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-180” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xorg

Hi. New to this. Don't see anything else listed like this. Not even sure
if this is an Ubuntu problem, or an NVidia problem.

 Running 64 bit 8.10 on a Dell D830 laptop w/Quadro NVS 140M, using
 restricted drivers.
Using the Nvidia Xserver settings app.
NOT running Xinerama. Compiz installed, but no effects turned on.

Single screen (laptop screen) works OK using v180 driver.
Twinview (laptop screen and external screen via docking station) does NOT
work using v180 driver. I can display one screen or the other, but I cannot
turn on both together. Screen sizes indicate a full twinview screen (double
width), and the working screen may scroll across to show the whole space,
but the second monitor does not turn on.

If I delete xorg.conf, both screens will turn on and mirror each other, but
as soon as I try twinview, one or the other will turn off (depending on the
 last screen enabled).

If I roll the driver back to v177, everything works as it did when I first
 set it up.
This is what I am currently running.

I can certainly survive using 177 (not sure what 180 brings to the party).
Just thought I should mention it to someone...

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 330906] Re: MASTER: GMA-500 lacks driver for 8.10 (poulsbo works only on 8.04)

2009-06-30 Thread Markus Heberling
@metalfan

Use the ddcprobe workaround I descibed above. That sould fix this error.

I have the following i my xorg.conf and it works fine:

Section Monitor
Identifier Configured Monitor
HorizSync 30-81
VertRefresh 56-85
EndSection

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 372469] Re: XV video crashes player on Jaunty (VIA KM400/KN400/P4M800, S3 UniChrome)

2009-06-30 Thread andy
I have a laptop acer aspire 1350 with chipset VIA KM400 and an LCD with a size
of 1024x768,
I added this line:
   Option PanelSize 1024x768
in the xorg.conf file in the device section and now I can use mplayer, vlc and
totem with the XV driver
without problems.

I use the openchrome driver with svn revision 747.

This is my device section in the xorg.conf file:

Section Device
Identifier VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome] Integrated
Video
   Driver openchrome
   Option PanelSize 1024x768
EndSection

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392946] Re: X crashes after hibernate and suspend

Today I disabled Compiz, because it eats too much memory (~1,2Gb virtual
and ~25Mb resident) and this bug is not reproduced. Now I can
successfully use suspend/hibernate functionality.

My desktop computer was able to load the update but not the laptop. I
still cannot get any graphics at all after the initial boot screen. When

same message.

I have tried both the 'fix problems' and terminal mode with networking.
Both hold back the xorg update.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 337243] Re: [g33] X.org crash on Intel 82G33/G31 (with stacktrace)

2009-06-30 Thread Tom Sillence
On karmic, X hung when I tried to open SystemPreferencesScreensaver.
The backtrace looks very different (attached).

Also, gdb now hangs when I try to continue after getting a backtrace -
before I could continue but reattaching would show the stack hadn't
changed. The last line of the logfile (referring to detaching) only
happened when I did sudo killall gdb from another terminal.

Once the hang occurs, killing and restarting Xorg (and gdm) does not
restore the hardware to a working state (I get a black screen). Only a
reboot does the trick. This was also the case on jaunty, but for the
record not on intrepid which I was running when I originally filed the
bug.

I nearly said this was repeatable, because it happened the first two
times I tried it. But sadly on the third there was no problem.

Lastly, I have never seen a crash or hang so far while compiz is
disabled.

change the path in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, it's still using /usr/X11R6/bin/X
when it should be /usr/bin/X. A new gdm is already uploaded, but it'll
take a while to get to the archive..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394019] [NEW] Unable to start x after upgrading to xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu2

2009-06-30 Thread Truthiswithin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg
Distro: 9.10 Karmic
CPU: amd64

After an upgrade this morning, the following packages were upgraded:

replace x11-common 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using x11-common_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_all.deb)
replace w3m 0.5.2-2build1 (using w3m_0.5.2-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb)
replace libhal1 0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu1 (using
libhal1_0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace libhal-storage1 0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu1 (using
libhal-storage1_0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace hal 0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu1 (using
hal_0.5.12+git20090626-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace xbase-clients 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using
xbase-clients_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_all.deb)
replace libgksu2-0 2.0.10-1ubuntu1 (using libgksu2-0_2.0.12-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb)
replace xserver-xorg-video-all 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using
xserver-xorg-video-all_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using
xserver-xorg-input-all_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using
xserver-xorg_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_amd64.deb)
replace xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu21 (using xorg_1%3a7.4+3ubuntu2_amd64.deb)

and upon rebooting (which I did right after upgrading), I cannot get to
the graphical login screen. It keeps telling me that it cannot set up
my display and offering to run in low graphic mode or reconfigure my
display. Neither works, and the xorg.0.log file seems to say nothing of
the problem. My nvidia 9600M GS card driver seems to load fine. I'm
enclosing the xorg log just in case, but I think there is a bug in the
new xorg packages... as this just came up after the above upgrade.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 375618] Re: does not pass xkb* settings to xorg server

2009-06-30 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package xorg - 1:7.4+3ubuntu4

---
xorg (1:7.4+3ubuntu4) karmic; urgency=low

  * debian/local/debian-x11-keymap.fdi: Do not check for existing
input.xkb.layout property; this was only set by the previous
10-keymap.fdi, which got disabled together with hal-setup-keymap.
Directly check for input.keys capabilities, to make the fdi
independent. This restores proper X.org keyboard layout setting
from console-setup. (LP: #375618, again)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301299] Re: [i855] Video playback problem with 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV and compiz after upgrade to Intrepid

2009-06-30 Thread daniel
Tried the alpha livecd. it works even worse. Haven't had the time to do more
than testing with gstreamer-properties, but now the entire window flickers
between the old behaviour and disappearing completely. Even the window
decoration is missing most of the time. Moving makes it appears (only sometimes
and it requires either to guess where the titlebar is or draging with alt), but
as soon as anything else is moved, it disappears.
I will post more details once I have the time to test more. Any requests?

2009-06-30 Thread Truthiswithin
Thanks Timo, I saw the new upload in xorg, but I haven't a clue what to
do with the source code there... do I have to wait for the deb package,
or is there a way to install the source code?
