[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398181] Re: UXA leads to 100% swap consumption

2009-07-12 Thread Arthur Schiwon
That looks really good know! Thanks a bunch! :)

I didn't know the Xorg Edgers PPA, yet, but with this and the current
version of 2.6.30 (i had one installed some few weeks ago) it works like
a charm again. No swap eating, dual screen working perfectly and
suspending is exczellent again! Only needed to fit the screen names,
which changed from LVDS to LVDS1 and VGA accordingly.

Do you also have the problem requiring UXA in jaunty's KDE?

With 4.2 i only used EXA which was working fine. I'm afraid, i don't
have the original version to test it.

2009-07-12 Thread alain57
i just googled a bit and find out that the only solution to increase or
decrease the brightness (in fact i need to decrease it, because it is at
100% all the time) was with these commands:

first : find the device address (here 00:02.0)
lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

second :
setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=66 (a value between 00 and FF, where FF is 100%)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394490] Re: xrandr: Configure crtc 0 invalid time

2009-07-12 Thread Johannes Rudolph
As mentioned in the bug report
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21987

this could well be a bug in the xrandr client tool. The xrandr client
tool always uses CurrentTime, instead of the precise timestamp as
returned from XRRGetScreenResources. What still escapes me, is why
grandr is still working although it uses CurrentTime as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394490] Re: xrandr: Configure crtc 0 invalid time

2009-07-12 Thread Johannes Rudolph
Jaunty contains xrandr 1.2.99.4 (see
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/x11-xserver-utils/7.4+1).
Between 1.2.99.4 and 1.3.0 are only 4 commits. I bisected the problem
and beb228842c77fab4a446e028dd501a01f0fb3fd3
(http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xrandr/commit/?id=beb228842c77fab4a446e028dd501a01f0fb3fd3)
resolved the problem.

So the resolution is to update to xrandr 1.3.0 in sync with the xserver
changes which revealed the problem in xrandr.

2009-07-12 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
It looks like xserver-xorg-video-intel from xorg-edgers PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa) has the fix included.
However, my guess is that it will only be fixed with KMS disabled (see
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2009-June/000578.html for
how). The corresponding kernel patch hasn't been commited yet (we should
be able to see it in this log when it is:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/anholt/drm-
intel.git;a=summary) and from there until it is in the mainline kernel
and built for ubuntu, I don't know how long it takes. I think the kernel
patch is necessary to fix it for KMS.

2009-07-12 Thread XCan
jjericho,

Although I appreciate your tests performed, they show nothing more than
the workaround that has been around for quite some time, namely, disable
compiz. You were saying that you believe it was something nvidia changed
in their new drivers, I have to disagree with reference to J N B's and
my own experimental findings where the same drivers worked in 8.10. It
is thus more likely that this is caused by an x.org issue as the
discussions between J N B and Travis indicates.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver

2009-07-12 Thread jjericho
XCan,

You are correct that disabling compiz was my original suggestion.
However, as I mentioned before, I've narrowed the issue down to either
xorg or Nvidia, and the more I mess with it, it's seeming to be nvidia.
Compiz is fully installed on my system. After removing all nvidia
referencing packages, VNC works however my resolution was only 800x600.
So after more troubleshooting today, I've confirmed on my own system
that VNC now works with Compiz, in addition to having xserver-xorg-
video-nv installed (1:2.1.12-1ubuntu5), in addition to some other nvidia
modaliases. I simply manually selected a few packages to install in
Package Manager, the xorg being the first one I tried. I now have a
normal screen resolution, Compiz enabled, and VNC working. The only
thing I cannot do at this point is enable Extra visual effects because
of the packages that option installs. Other than not having some fancy
features like window wobble...my system is fully functional now with VNC
and the necessary packages. Hope this helps!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 389519] Re: [i965gm] [karmic] Cursor can move off-screen when dual-monitors do not form rectangular area

2009-07-12 Thread Rolf Leggewie
This is expected behaviour in xorg and not only since Karmic. What do
you expect the cursor to do when moving in and out of that area not
covered by either of the monitors? One camp of users wants it to move
around freely while the other camp wants the cursor to strictly stay
within the visible screens. I'm from the second camp, you seem to be
from the first. I think this may even be configurable. I looked around
quite a bit (I was sure to have a bug report to the opposite effect some
time ago), yet found nothing.

I think this report should be closed with status invalid.

within the visible screens. I'm from the second camp, you seem to be
from the first. I think this may even be configurable. I looked around
quite a bit (I was sure to have a bug report to the opposite effect some
time ago), yet found nothing.

I think this report should be closed with status invalid.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 140051] Re: xf86-video-amd: fails to autoconfigure

2009-07-12 Thread ckranich
Hello all,

I am sure the bug now is fixed in Hardy and Ibex. I tried once with a new
Ubuntu and it worked properly. I will have to get a system(not at hand
currently) and come back with the information since which version it
worked.

Best Regards,

   Christian

I have to say it is. My Hardy servers don't have the PPA in them (just
-updates) and I've tested on Ibex with success as well.

 Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-amd

As part of the LTSP project, we detect which video card is in the machine
by running a Xorg -configure :1, and using the resulting file.

 I have a ThinCan DBE61, http://www.artecgroup.com/thincan/ and am proving

It has a geode video driver, but autodetection fails with a crash dump:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver

2009-07-12 Thread Chris Balcum
Sorry but I have to disagree. I have seen this bug with ATI drivers
also, along with nVidia. I bet Intel drivers would do the same thing.

As long as compiz is running, VNC cannot work unless xdamage is disabled
(x11vnc can do this). But that is not a solution, it's merely a
workaround.

The problem lies either within compiz code or with xorg code.

I would like to add that I have also experienced this bug under ati drivers
this is not an nvidia issue at all.

Its extremely discouraging to see how little progress has been made with
this over the months. This is a major regression which affects me every day.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 355258] Re: [i865] Jaunty: DRI disabled with i865

2009-07-12 Thread Edmundo
Well, I tested on jaunty with the repository named by Brice before,
and it didn't work.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

I get to the background of KDM, but no login page shows up. I could
restart by using the alt-sysrq keys. I didn't test starting startx
from the command line, though.

So perhaps I'll just have to wait for kinky kangaroo to show up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 341898] Re: MythTV Frontend does not work with RADEON DRI

2009-07-12 Thread Tomasz Czapiewski
It looks like this bug still exists in updated Kubuntu Jaunty.
My card: ATI Radeon 9600 (RV350) using open source 'radeon' driver.

Packages:
xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2
mythtv 0.21.0+fixes19961-0ubuntu8
xserver-xorg1:7.4~5ubuntu18
xserver-xorg-core2:1.6.0-0ubuntu14
libgl1-mesa-dri7.4-0ubuntu3.2

I've just installed mythtv (for the first time in Jaunty).
Mythtv, mythfrontend and even mythtv-setup windows are not being
displayed/refreshed and many bugs in terminal:
X Error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) 8
  Major opcode: 62
  Minor opcode: 0
  Resource id: 0x3800030.

Adding 'export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1' to /etc/mythtv/session-
settings didn't help but running the application by
'XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 mythfrontend' from console helps.

holding off for 15.15 where it was just recently fixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376853] Re: gdm fails to load nvidia closed-source driver

2009-07-12 Thread punzada
Bryce, thank you for looking into this matter, after a clean install
(jaunty 64) I tried the method of adding your ppa and installing that
driver from the start. It appears to load into the system and load the
driver without issue now, however ..

I've also noticed I am now experiencing this bug while attempting to
'compiz --replace ' from terminal --
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/316214 with same
output as Daniel Dekovic commented with.

Compiz however still appears to function fine when enabling it through
the gnome gui (system-preferences-appearance-visual effects-extra).
This has turned into a horrible annoyance to a very minor inconvenience
if this holds up so thanks for the good work :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver

2009-07-12 Thread J N B
Apparently it's agreed by all of us that this bug is manifest using
nvidia (and ATI, and virtualbox, ?others?) drivers. But the 'trigger'
is a change in one of the packages added to Jaunty. Fixing the
offending package will restore functionality.

I installed Compiz 0.7.8 (intrepid's package) and dependencies manually
last night with no change in [lack of] functionality.

(Can someone else install an earlier version of Compiz in Jaunty to back
me up? )

In the meantime, disable Compiz (visual effects) and use Metacity
Compositing if you 'need' a compositing manager; or use the vino
workaround from Jonh Wendell if you can spare the bandwidth. Both
options will allow us to keep full resolution and use VNC, but we've
still lost functionality.

Xorg devs. we're anxious to see what you find. :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver

2009-07-12 Thread J N B
To answer Travis Watkins's earlier questions:

In my experience:
1. VNC works using Metacity compositing.
2. Using Intrepid's Compiz with Jaunty's everything else still does not work.

(Those are my previous comments in a nutshell.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver

2009-07-12 Thread NoOp
When you use metacity composting you are not enabling any 'Extra'/additional
visual effects. As others have already reported, this is the issue. Simply
turning off additional visual effects isn't an answer or solution, it's a poor
workaround. Vino seems to think that they have resolved the issue:

Comment #3 from André Klapper (points: 30)

This bug has also been fixed for 2.26.2:
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/vino/commit/?h=gnome-2-26id=f5260a2ad0ad9f3b1c673f6a52a938abd2a58dbb

For jaunty:
$ apt-cache policy vino
vino:
  Installed: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.26.1-0ubuntu1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Has anyone tried vino 2.26.2 to see if that works?
