[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401280] [NEW] Ubuntu and Intel: LOW GRAPHICS MODE

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]
My compiz.real locks up with a black screen any time I switch virtual terminals or try to suspend. Nothing mentioned worked for me. I've created a workaround which is working very well. 1. I've created a modified fusion-icon. Download it here: http://www.jacobstoner.com/fusion-hacked.tar.gz 2. Add this like to your /etc/sudoers (your user account should be able to run sudo fgconsole without a password) ALL ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL fgconsole 3. Add this line to the top of /usr/sbin/pm-suspend (under the comments): killall -9 compiz.real install the modified fusion-icon by extracting, opening the directory and running: sudo make install The modifications will only work with the GTK interface. So if you're using KDE you'll probably need to force GTK by altering the code. The modifications will monitor your active virtual terminal, kill it as needed, and relaunch as needed. It will also relaunch compiz after 5 seconds if it dies, this helps with the restore after a suspend. I am using gnome and debian. I'd be happy to modify it if someone needs any help for their particular setup. As far as I'm concerned these modifications will make a fine permanent solution. -- [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118605 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 400920] Re: [i945] Displacement between Blender render window and content.
This seems to be related to the Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI). By adding the line Option "DRI" "false" to the "Device" section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf this went away when KMS was disabled (i.e running UMS). Alpha-2 has UMS by default, but the default has later been changed to KMS (see https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2009-June/000578.html). With KMS it happens no matter what (but AFAIK KMS is part of DRI, so it doesn't make sense to disable DRI with KMS enabled). Could you try the above line in xorg.conf and verify that the problem goes away then? You may also try KMS by either adding i915.modeset=1 at the LiveCD boot command line (F6 IIRC), or by trying a newer daily-live from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/ , but that may not be necessary. I wanted to test with the VESA driver as well, but it didn't work at all with KMS (reported as bug 401214), but with UMS and VESA it went away. -- [i945] Displacement between Blender render window and content. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/400920 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401214] Re: [i965GM] Xorg crashes on startup when using driver "VESA" (KMS bug)
It seems that the crash initially reported doesn't happen every time and is a side issue (I'll update the title and description to remove the crash). The real issue is that the screen is black with some random white dots scattered on the top of the monitor (picture attached). It seems that xorg is running fine without anything changing on the screen. CapsLock still turns on and off the LED. I started a gdb session from a remote computer anticipating to do a full backtrace after the crash. Since the crash didn't happen I just took some backtraces and went on. I switched VT a few times, and that resulted in a SIGUSR1 and I had to tell gdb to continue. Attaching the gdb session log. Since this seems related to KMS (which a presume is part of DRM) I turned on DRM debugging by echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug This results in a lot of extra information in the dmesg output. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 400864] Re: 9.04 PPC: r128 does not detect ATI Rage 128 on G3 iMac
Partial SOLUTION: xorg.conf must contain the line BusID "PCI:0:16:0" in the "Device" section - this will detect the ATI Rage. I had not tried this as I assumed that the lspci (hex-)value should be correct, but apparently, xorg expects decimal. Hence, the installer needs to somehow come up with this. Unfortunately, the r128 driver now crashes. Regardless of the power management setting for what to do on lid close (tried Blank Screen and Do Nothing), the screen stays black on lid open. It seems to come on, but it stays black. I was able to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+F1 then ctrl+alt+delete. It doesn't seem like the OS froze, just the display is black. Fine again after a reboot. If I switch to my old jaunty .29 kernel on boot, it doesn't happen. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399238] [NEW] Intel GM965 poor graphics performance
You have been subscribed to a public bug: After much time spent trying to get ubuntu 9.04 (desktop) to run on a performance par with Vista, I have finally thrown in the towel. I have a background in computing (architecture and OS) and have several years at university and qualifications to back that up, so I think it's fair to say that I know my way around computers. However, when the graphics performance of my less-than two-year old laptop runs like a ten-year old desktop, I have to ask myself how well developed ubuntu really is. Laptop: Acer 5720 Intel GM965 express mobile chipset with integrated graphics Intel 2.00Ghz core two duo CPU 2GB dual channel memory 160GB hard drive I am fully aware of the issues surrounding integrated Intel graphics and I've installed numerous updates and even a new kernel, but when Vista can provide circa 117 FPS in Planet Penguin (as an example) but the best that ubuntu can manage is circa 19 FPS despite countless hours/days of trying to improve things then there is clearly still a very serious problem. Nothing, and I mean nothing, would give me greater pleasure than moving away from MS Windows, but the alternative has to be a workable solution. Sadly, for me, ubuntu is not there yet. I do think ubuntu has great potential, but at current rates of progress I think it will be several versions into the future before it is a viable alternative for me. The reason for registering and posting this is purely to provide feedback, and let the ubuntu developers know that this issue needs resolving before I (and from what I have read, many, many others) will see ubuntu as a realistic OS choice. I'll keep tabs on new releases but until I start reading about Intel graphics performance issues being resolved I'll be giving ubuntu a miss. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Intel GM965 poor graphics performance https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/399238 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401131] [NEW] [g45] X doesn't start with intel driver only vesa
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I've got a Intel G45 chipset with a X4500HD. It was installed with the vesa driver as already the desktop install cd failed to use the intel driver. So I tried to use the intel driver manually, which always resulted in the X server not starting up giving this error message: "(EE) intel(0): No valid modes.". Because of that i thought it might be related with bug #194760. Therefore I added the information about the modes to xorg.conf and still it gave the same error. I'll append the different xorg configurations and the log files respectively. damn, sorry! Was away and did not see this. And it'll be some 2 weeks before I come back home so as to test it. In the mean time, I simply removed the nvidia-package and gone with the nv driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 261910] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in _nv000069gl()
Hi, Unfortunately, the automated bug reporter was not able to salvage a good report out of the crash. Furthermore, from what little info is present it does appear that this is a problem with the OpenGL implementation of the graphics drivers for your nvidia card. Unfortunately, the nvidia video drivers are closed-source pieces of software, meaning that Ubuntu developers have no access to modify it or fix bugs in it, only nvidia can. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 400920] Re: [i945] Displacement between Blender render window and content.
Thank you for reporting this bug in the development version of ubuntu. Could you run `apport-collect 400920` which will upload a bunch of information about your system? If that fails, at least upload the output of `lspci -vvnn`, `glxinfo` and the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log (do not paste then into a comment, rather attath it as files). Also, since blender 2.49a has not made it into official Karmic yet (it will), which package are you using (there are at least two in PPAs and a few different builds on the blender web page).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 334101] Re: FFe: Xv and EXA not supported on R6xx/R7xx chipsets
I would just like to report my success on installing the radeon-drivers and getting smooth video rendering and a working xvideo. For me, however, radeonhd doesn't work very well so I have to use the radeon driver and modify my xorg.conf in order for it to use the radeon driver instead of the radeonhd driver by default. Using the radeonhd driver makes the refresh rate of my monitor too low, and I am unable to change it under Preferences->Display (the only refresh rate present there is "0 Hz"). And changing the resolution causes the colors on the screen to get very odd (light green, purple etc.) But, fortunately, with the radeon driver everything works perfectly. Refresh rate is 85 Hz as usual, and under Preferences->Display I can see this refresh rate and not just "0 Hz". So, in short, this is what worked for me: Installing the following packages from Tormod's PPA (https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa): (I had to remove the old version of xserver-xorg-video-radeon first) xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.12.99+git20090710.43db263d-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb (197.1 KiB) xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg_6.12.99+git20090710.43db263d-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb (201.5 KiB) xserver-xorg-video-radeon_6.12.99+git20090710.43db263d-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb (507.7 KiB) xserver-xorg-video-radeon-dbg_6.12.99+git20090710.43db263d-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb (1.5 MiB) Follow instructions on http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd%3Ar6xx_r7xx_branch for building new versions of radeon.ko and drm.ko. Copying drm.ko and radeon.ko to "/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/" and "/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/radeon" respectively. Modifying my xorg.conf according to the instructions on the X.Org Wiki and adding the following to the "Device" section so the "radeon" driver is used instead of the default "radeonhd" driver: Driver "radeon" -- FFe: Xv and EXA not supported on R6xx/R7xx chipsets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/334101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
