The latest daily build isnt available atm, but I tried upgrading to the latest xorg etc. and the problem persists, suggesting that the problem is more with xorg than the live cd (i.e the live cd contains the xorg, which is the problem) Reverted back to xorg from jaunty and everything is OK. Linux-image-2.6.31-020631rc3-generic This image runs black-screen right after boot start. Recovery mode: all text boot to console and if I enter exit this Linux-image boots normal to login and I can use karmic koala. My window version xp is on karmic koala list grub.cfg but not on grub- boot-menu so to start windows I have to edit grub-boot-menu at start. Up to now all karmic koala Linux-images takes about 4 minutes to load hardware drivers, long boot time. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363238] Re: very poor Xorg performance on various older graphics HW - XAA solves this
I figured out my issue with getting software rasterization -- it was the permissions on the device. Based on this bug report here: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19492 I tried both glxinfo and sudo glxinfo and noted that in the former case I got software rasterization, while in the latter case I was getting Mesa DRI Radeon... As recommended in that bug report I set the permissions on /dev/dri/card0 to 0666 and am now getting Mesa DRI when I'm not the root user as well. Now EXA acceleration seems to be working quite well. Martin Olsson wrote: @Rolf, note that loading the glx module explicitly doesn't do anything for recent X.org versions (it's autoloaded and so is dri module). Further, the permissions on the dri device node are also no longer in use because that device now has an ACL on it (so the Mode 0666 stuff is obsolete). If you do ls -l /dev/dri/card0 you will notice that the permissions have a small + char next to it, that indicates the presence of an ACL. You can see the ACL using the command getfacl /dev/dri/card0. Interestingly, the permissions on the dri device node apparently still do have some relevance; at least they made a big difference in my case. Is there perhaps a bug lurking here? ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #19492 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19492 -- very poor Xorg performance on various older graphics HW - XAA solves this https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363238 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368187] Re: [HD3650] Kubuntu: garbage screen
I'm having the exact same problem as described by pureblood. Also using HD3650 AGP. It's not Kubuntu Jaunty specific as I experienced it on Ubuntu 9.04 Amd64 fresh install, Mythbuntu 9.04 Amd64 fresh install and Ubuntu 9.04 live CD. Each time, fglrx is not enabled. Interestingly, this problem only appeared when I replaced my motherboard from Asus K8N (NVIDIA nForce3) to Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M Rev1.x (VIA K8M800). But it doesn't seem to be related to the mainboard since pureblood is on an intel configuration. Option DRI off did indeed restore desktop display but it's more a workaround than a solution. Option AGPMode 8 did not help, and unfortunately my BIOS does not let me change any AGP settings (except voltage which is on default). The on board video is supposedly disabled by the BIOS in the presence of an AGP card, but I'm not sure if linux correctly ignores it or not always completely... dmesg, xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and lspci -vvnn generated with Mythbuntu are in the attachment. ** Attachment added: bug_368187.tar http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29788459/bug_368187.tar -- [HD3650] Kubuntu: garbage screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
