It turns out that if I use the kernel from the PPA which has KMS enabled
by default, my system boots fine with KMS. If I use the default kernel

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411295] [NEW] External screen resolution is not detected correctly

2009-08-10 Thread Jonathan Ernst
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The problem occurs with an HP w25558hc 26´´ LCD monitor hooked up on the
VGA port of an HP Mini with Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller on Jaunty.

The maximum resolution (when using only the external screen) detected by
xrandr and the display configuration tool is

1280x1024

Instead of the correct maximum resolution of

1920x1200

The maximum resolution is correctly shown in Xorg.0.log AND ddcprobe AND

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411186] Re: nouveau DRM fails to install

2009-08-10 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Actually, this isn't quite a nouveau bug; the problem here is that the
initramfs forcibly loads the i915 driver before pretty much anything
else happens. This loads the drm module from the initramfs, which isn't
the same version as the one nouveau needs (and is in updates/dkms).
When nouveau tries to load, it can't load the newer drm module (because
there's one already loaded), and so it fails to load entirely.

I _think_ that if you rebuild your initramfs after installing
nouveau-kernel-source, then the newer drm module will end up in the
initramfs. I'm not sure about this, however.

I'm also not sure what else nouveau could do about this; it's really an
update-initramfs problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 410262] Re: [VX800]openchrome hangs when the mouse cursor is inside of a image in gimp

2009-08-10 Thread Lasse
I followed the instructions on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome to install the svn version
and I saw no error message during the installation.

After I have been updating the ltsp-image and put the thinclient to
boot, it hangs where it is normally starting X. I am sorry that I can
not get any Xorg.0.log as the computer is diskless and it hangs so
completely that I can not ssh into it to retrieve anything.

Apparenty the svn version is behaving even worse on this hardware :(
... or is there anything I can do, besides what was in those instructions?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394489] Re: cannot get official via driver for s3 unichrome pro cn700 for ubuntu 8.10 intrepid to work with it!

2009-08-10 Thread Bartosz
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome
+
+ Hardware: gateway mx3210 laptop

ok so, for the longest time, via hadn't released any drivers, thus, the
openchrome project was started... well, thats not what i'm here for,
originally, i found out when via released the UBUNTU 7.10 drivers for my
cn700 model s3 unichrome pro IGP... but they were not compatible with
ubuntu 8.04 or ubuntu 8.10, which really bothered me...

so finally the other day, i check if they've updated them by chance...
and they have! finally i think, i've got a breakthrough for linux on this
laptop! (gateway mx3210 craptop) anyway... i dont run windoze anymore. i run
purely ubuntu 8.10 right now... with this video card, by default, it works with
glx gears nice and fast but...
it has some issue i guess with the videoram and stuff, and doesnt do 3d,
but... so that leads to having flash enabled being instable, aswell as, it
shuts right off the same when i stream webcam on aMSN aswell! youtube will kill
it if flash is enabled, and well..

i really really really want to get this thing working fully... i got the
official, proper 2d and 3d driver for this chipset, and this version of
ubuntu (intrepid ibex) yet... when i follow the install instructions, it
screws up upon restart, and i have to uninstall it, and re-hack my
xorg.conf to work with the damn display resolution (1280x768) i'd really
LOVE to know why... and I'd really love the solution to my problem
they've released it, yet it doesnt seem to work for me, can anyone help?

upon restart after installing the official driver it is black screen with X
cursor and then the grey window in the center pops up saying, it was unable to
detect my video card/display/etc and, i need to reconfigure my graphics... then
i have to fix it all back to how it is now, and then... GRRR i just want things
to work, and my computer not to shut off all the time... like, how come its
screwing up, its the right driver, for this version... i dont get it...
what am i missing? anyone know?

As of kernels 2.6.31-4 and 2.6.31-5, the bug reappears. I hope that the
patch can be integrated into the relevant binary .debs so that upgrades
will not cause unpleasant regressions.

I am unsure what patch I should apply, please advise. I am using the most
current karmic kernel with

   X.Org X server -- VIA display driver

If there is any debug info I can provide, let me know what would be
helpful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411075] [NEW] upon install of destop 9.4 iso video display is disrupted. Uing ATI video card running Fire GL

2009-08-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I am using a Radon ATI video card, Radon 9000 AGP4x with 128MB DDR/128
BIT RAM with Core Clock Speed: 200 MHz. As soon as the Live CD starts
to install the video becomes unrecognizable with only white boxes
visible on the lower 75% of the display. I also tried this insall on an
old computer with 6MB RAM and 4GB hard drive. After 24 hours it hung on
Partitionaing Virtual Drives at 68%.

I really had hoped to use your OS on some older computers which I would
upgrade to 256 MB of RAM and at least 80 GB. I tried to use a Linux
based system 2 years ago and found the hardware requirements for
Linspire were dinosuars and virtually impossible to collect.

Is there any free Linux based OS that will install in contemporary
equipment? I do not think my video card is at all high end???

Also can I install your OS on compeely wiped/unformatted HD's? If not
what formatting needs to occur???

Thanks, I hope:

Dr. Snyder

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 405655] [NEW] poor graphics performance ATI RAdeon Mobility 7500

2009-08-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Xubuntu since 6.06 (I believe..)
Graphics performance was never excellent, but o.k.
With 9.04 graphics performance is *poor*. Scrolling in Ooo-Files or PDF's is so
slow that I can see the single scrolling steps.
Switching desks is *slow* and hangs some times.

glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Radeon 20061018 AGP 4x x86/MMX/SSE2

CPU usage is always down to almost 0%, so there are no processes slowing
the system down, as far as I can see. On scrolling / desk-switching it
jumps up to 100%. Compositor is off.

I am unsure if it is the same issue as reported with the INTEL-chips.

By the way: all information in xorg.conf has gone to some unspecified
location. Why not leave a note there like it was done in httpd.conf when
everything moved to apache2.conf?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383305] [NEW] OpenOffice Impress Projector Resolution/Display/Screen Problems

2009-08-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Today I had a embarrassing and frustrating experience with OpenOffice
3.0.1 Impress in Ubuntu 9.04.

I was giving a talk at an engineering conference. When it was my turn
to present, I plugged in the projector, went to the display control
panel, and turned on the output to the external monitor. I ran my
presentation, but when I went to full-screen mode, only part of the
screen was visible on the projector. I moved the presentation up to the
second virtual screen, then tried to re-run it full screen. My whole
graphics card crashed at that point, maybe because I'm using the
terrible intel graphics onboard driver.

My advisor luckily had another laptop with the presentation on it, but
when we fired up his, the same thing happened. We couldn't get it to
look right on the projector. Finally, in desperation, we went to the
Slide Settings in openoffice and changed it from full screen to
window. We managed to get through in that mode, although it
definitely was a disappointment not being in full screen.

So frustrating.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411704] [NEW] intermittent system crashes supposedly caused by intel xorg driver

2009-08-10 Thread okubax
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Started about a week ago and now, it's really becoming a pain in my
ass. My Ubuntu Jaunty system now crashes/hangs/soft-freezes(whatever)
more than 6 times daily. First I thought it was becuause of the new
intel driver that I installed after following some steps mentioned on
Ubuntu Forums, after which Ireverted back to the original Ubuntu Jaunty
intel driver and then the nightmare really started. No matter what I am
doing, the system always crashes even when it is idle !. So I thought it
was time to look at my system logs to see what the hell was going on. I
found out that the evry time that my system crashes, it always logs an
error about this: drm:i915_getparam. Guess it had something to do with
intel drivers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357551] Re: [HD 3400] jaunty doesn't resume from hybernation

2009-08-10 Thread narnie
I have a Toshiba A505-S6965 that has a ATI Radeon HD 4570.

I have the same problem. When I suspend, it comes up with the
background, but never gets any further. I have successfully ssh'd into
the box and have the dmesg, kern, pm-suspend logs attached.

Perhaps the money line is:
Aug 9 17:48:27 toshiba-laptop kernel: [74570.312008] [fglrx] ASIC hang happened

I booted the live cd and it suspended fine with the radeon driver. I
tried to remove the restricted driver but it was unsuccessful and I
ended up having to do a complete reinstall. Now I'm using the 2D Radeon
driver and can suspend (this is mission critical for me in the way I use
my laptop) but I sure would like the ability to use the 3D features of
the card.

I also tried the https://edge.launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
and the updated driver for fglrx didn't help it.

I hope that this thread doesn't close since this remains an unfixed
problem.

Are there any settings that might be helpful?

Thanks,
Narnie

2009-08-10 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Larry, for various reasons including ease of workflow, we prefer that
closed xorg-bugs are only reopened by their original reporters. We would
prefer if you could file a new report with `ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-
video-intel`. That way we get _your_ (and only your) versions of all the
various logs we need. I know the bug reporting process at Launchpad is
encouraging very strongly to check for other bugs that describe the same
issue, and that is quite unfortunate for xorg. It would be great if you
could close this bug again and open a new bug, possibly referencing this

2009-08-10 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
oneleaf, in Karmic we are now using KMS and because of that it would be
great if we could also get the output of dmesg when it fails. You may
get that by using ssh to log in from another computer after installing
the openssh-server package.

Is the new Xorg.2.log from an installed system or a LiveCD? Is the same
xorg.conf as before used? If it is, could you check if removing it makes
any difference?

Your Xorg.2.log stops rather abruptly, so possible xorg crashes or
hangs. We may need to get a backtrace to understand what is going on. It
would be nice if you could check out
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing and see if you are able to get a
backtrace using any of the methods listed there.
