I'm pasting his info, and will attach the apport-cli log he sent.: Have created the apport-cli report based on Ubuntu 9.04. On this hardware we are unable to install Ubuntu 9.10. During the installation process, when the X comes up the complete desktop just hangs (keyboard, mouse). We also tried installing on different hardware and clone the image of it using Clonezilla (www.clonezilla.org) and tried deploying on this machine. The booting process was fine, but when it goes to X, the complete desktop hangs. We have to do hard reset. Other info: On this hardware, we have to use Safe Graphics mode during installation with Ubuntu 9.04. We tried the same on Ubuntu 9.10, but it doesn't help. We need this to be fixed for our upcoming VMware Workstation release. Ubuntu is our default testing platform and we want WS to work fine on Ubuntu environment :) If you need any additional info on this bug, please ping me. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau If I have 2 monitors plugged in during boot (in this case, my laptop screen and a DVI screen), the console boot phase works great, then when X starts, it seems to crash, then restart, and continuously restart with no way to stop it (even unplugging the 2nd monitor at this point does nothing). With only the 1 monitor plugged in at boot (the laptop screen), X starts fine. I can then plug in the 2nd monitor, and use the display applet to enable it, and all is good. I can confirm this behavior running on an Aspire One (Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller) with xserver-xorg- video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu1 and compiz 1:0.8.3+git20091005-0ubuntu5. It seems with tha latest (ubuntu3) release of package the problem is disappeard (at least to my machine). Installing with package manager or restricted hw manager works well in case of fglrx driver. Someone should test what if when the one upgrade form 9.04. Summary: X server freezes shortly after startup. The problem is similar
to several problems already reported with the intel driver, but opening
a separate bug report (for the time being) since none of the existing
entries quite matches my configuration. Feel free to mark it as
duplicate if you think it is.
System: Kubuntu 'Karmic', updated yesterday (2009-10-09). Buffer dump is
attached.
Description: The X server locks up shortly after it is started, no
matter what I do. Usually this happens when the login procedure is just
about finished, but I have also seen it after KDM waiting for some time
for the login credentials. Mouse pointer remains functional, apart from
that complete lock (esp. keyboard). Magic sys'req key still works, but
when I try SReq-(R,E,I), KDM seems to try to restart X, resulting in a
*really* complete lockup (even my ssh diagnostics session dies).
Notes: I had the same problem with Jaunty, but there it helped forcing
the driver to use XAA instead of EXA. The newer driver does not support
that ('Option AccelMethod is not used'), and cannot be forced to
disable acceleration either ('Option NoAccel is not used'). And thanks
to the new near-magic auto detection scheme, it is not even trivial to
fall back to the VESA driver... so Karmic is completely and utterly non-
usable on that machine.

It seems you are all using the intel driver from the xorg-edgers ppa. In this driver support for user mode setting has been dropped. This means you now have to use a kernel with modesetting (KMS) enabled. The easiest way to do this is to install the kernel from the same ppa and reboot using that kernel. You have been subscribed to a public bug: When upgrading from Interpid to Jaunty I discovered that graphics performance had degraded. Flash and movie playing performance was very poor even with the xv output driver. when looking at the /proc/mtrr I noticed that there was no line listed for my Nvidia Geforce FX5200 card as there was in Interpid. looking at /var/log/debug in Jaunty it reads: Sep 23 20:02:56 ubuntu kernel: [ 101.521701] mtrr: no MTRR for e800,800 found I have tried both with 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.28-15 kernels on Jaunty and I'm currently using 2.6.27-14 on Interpid so this seems to be more of an X server problem than kernel bug. (Shouldn't the X server set the mtrr range?). In Kubuntu Karmic Beta, I can see a mouse pointer on a black screen after logging out. This is new. The mouse pointer changes to an input cursor on some areas on the screen. Could be that these are the areas for username and password. Also new: It is possible to restart the XServer with Alt+Print+K. After that everything is ok. The latest driver 185.18.36 runs in the same way you described WITH and WITHOUT the workaround above (that looking at the code seems to be a test exclusion but does not solve the problem). I tested everything with kernels x.31-12 and x.31-13. I tested a new beta driver frome the NVIDIA site (the 190 beta) by a manual installation and it does not solve the problem so I reversed back to Ubuntu version (185). However I think this is a strange behavior because the glx module is properly installed and glxinfo returns a properly running extension : name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation glxgears runs properly and Google earth it's extremely fast, but there are problem with COMPIZ and with KDE also that does not use COMPIZ. I don't know why but probably this is due to an OPENGL feature that fall back to a software implementation if the CPU does not have PAT . I am in doubt about a kernel patch solution or a simple test removal, I think this is an architectural problem into the driver that dorce PAT instead of MTRR , and the new 190 driver still does not work. I had a similar problem on the kernel ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30/ ) and my MSI Wind U90x. I just downloaded ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.31.3/ ) and installed (sudo dpkg-i *. deb) for my platform + sources for my VirtualBox. Easy way. Restart, and now all working. Sorry for the delay, it took a me a while to get this working. So I downgraded everything but drm-modules-source from xorg-edgers to mesa 7.6.0-1ubuntu2 and then recompiled libgl1-mesa-dri with some troubles to enable r600 support. In the end it turned out well and the fix does seem to be included, desaturated windows work fine. Except for bug 425303 I didn't find anything else wrong with 7.6. Not-a-benchmark shows 8000 frames/5s, /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gl* all work, wine games work, only blender was easy to crash drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -22. Kernel failed to parse or rejected command stream.
