I've encountered the same failure mode here. The keyboard responds only to Alt-SysRq-* keystrokes. This is with an up-to-date Karmic, running on a Dell Optiplex GX260. You can run apport-collect with the xorg.conf, it is basically to get hardware information. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] [NEW] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel After installing Xubuntu Karmic on this laptop, I'm having regular Xserver lockups, as in once per session. The mouse pointer still moves, but clicking does nothing and the keyboard is disabled. I can use the Alt-SysRq-REISUB commands, but the reboot that follows doesn't complete. The only way to clear this is by a complete power-down. The time before the freeze occurs varies but would usually be less than 15 minutes. I have tried using the standard Xserver-xorg-video-intel with DRI disabled, and a retro version of the same package, but the problem persists. Also tried adding nomodeset to the kernel command line when booting, which likewise made no difference. Hardy has run without issue on this machine, and as far as I can tell, Jaunty also. (I ran it for an hour or more from the live CD without problems.) The batchbuffer dump archive is attached. I reinstalled the standard Xserver-xorg-video-intel package for this test. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477256 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477264] [NEW] LVDS flickers continuously
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel The local flat panel of the laptop flickers continuously when booting the laptop in the X. I have checked the refresh rate and display mode with xrandr, and I didn't notice anything wrong. The text consoles are working correctly. I haven't tried to attach external monitor. This issue occurred after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10. The flickering is continuous and of very high frequency - possibly 1/2 frames are drawn completely black and the rest correctly. Often also the display output is displaced a bit to the right, and the image is wrapped around so that the right part of the display contents is drawn on the left. Sometimes going quickly to the text consoles and back to X fixes this issue, but sometimes it does not have any effect, even when repeating several times. Also, after doing this, even if the flicker stops, the display output may still be displaced, but sometimes also this is fixed when going to the console and back. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433326] Re: [i945g] maximum resolution: 800x600
There is some confusion associated with this bug. Firstly, when the bug applies, higher modes than 800x600 are simply not available. So, dfrevert's comment on 2009-10-18, does not apply to this bug because xrandr -s 1024x768 will give no such mode available. Secondly, this problem does not happen (at least didn't for me in two different monitors) if the monitor supports EDID (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_display_identification_data). That's why I think most people don't have THIS bug. Thidly, looking at Xorg log, it's clear that higher resolution modes are eliminated due to vertical refresh rates being out of range for an unknown monitor. Fourthly, I cannot confirm now, but as I recall, when I had this intel 945 card on a non EDID compatible monitor, even if I manually configured Xorg.conf with a Monitor section, specifying decent refresh rates, this would be ignored, and I would still be limited to low resolution. I'll confirm that as soon as possible. And if this is the case, then the issue is with the driver ignoring the Monitor section, even if EDID information is not available. Other than that, when the resolution is ok, X is well accelerated glxgears gives me 60fps on a Celeron Mobile 1.6Ghz with this board and user interface is smooth. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451194] Re: [i965gm] Session active, not inhibited, screen idle notification after screen blacks out during normal operation
I don't know if this is the same bug. For the first time today, i am experiencing the same problem - having the screen blank out during normal use and getting the icon with the Session active, not inhibited, screen idle My graphics card is NVidia, however, and I am using the non-free driver, v. 185.18.36 (installed via ubuntu's Hardware Drivers applet). I am on Karmic x86_64 (kernel 2.6.31-14) (fresh install a few days ago, all updates applied). I have not changed my x configuration lately, so I don't know what it could be. (I have been typing with the icon showing and my display dimmed per my power settings for idle times, but just now, as I typed the line about the x configuration, the icon disappeared and my display undimmed, so apparently, something woke the power daemon up, but I have no idea what). dmesg doesn't look like it contains anything useful (and there was no change in it when the machine work up just now). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)
I've attached both Xorg.0.conf and Xorg.0.log.old, because I'm not sure which one, if any, is the one needed. The laptop was rebooted immediately after the freeze (via ssh) and hung while rebooting, and then again after powering off completely. (I retrieved the log files just now via PartedMagic liveCD.) [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 404135] Re: [lucid] New nvidia 190.42 driver available
nvidia confirms that This driver is now the official stable release. Would be nice to see in the official repositories for karmic and lucid as nvidia-glx-190. I'm replying in bulk so I can get everyone pointed into a direction most likely to result in getting you a useful workaround and us a complete bug report that can be solved. Most of these problems describe issues that have documented troubleshooting procedures, so perhaps the most helpful thing I can do is point you to them: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting These guides explain why things break the way they do, and in some cases provide workarounds. I would ask that you first go through the appropriate guide for your problem, particularly if you are having problems with resolution, crashes, fonts, or blank screen issues, and then file a bug report using the following command: ubuntu-bug xorg This collects more detailed information than the System Testing tool does.
