[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 469820] Re: system locks up at random intervals, except mouse

2009-11-07 Thread Daniel Richard G.
I've encountered the same failure mode here. The keyboard responds only
to Alt-SysRq-* keystrokes. This is with an up-to-date Karmic, running on
a Dell Optiplex GX260.

Here is the relevant extract from /var/log/syslog, with each line's
datestamp/host prefix elided:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475466] Re: [RC410] detects AGP on a PCIE card

2009-11-07 Thread Apoorv Parle
When should I run apport-collect 475466?
1. with no xorg.conf
2. or with the xorg.conf with that line added to it (if this then how to
because I get a blank screen)

Also because you said that PCIE is correct option for me, I tried that
instead of PCI in jaunty driver and I get a blank screen.

I have Radeon Xpress 200 which is onboard so how can it be PCIe?

In Windows(where driver is correct) with GPU-Z running I get my bus type
as AGP 8...@pci ( http://gpuz.techpowerup.com/09/11/07/gqn.png )

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475466] Re: [RC410] detects AGP on a PCIE card

2009-11-07 Thread Tormod Volden
You can run apport-collect with the xorg.conf, it is basically to get
hardware information.

I was thinking since the chipset is reported as PCIE it has some
internal on-board PCIE interface, but I do not know much about this
integrated graphics processors (IGP). The chipset has an PCIE interface
to other units, but since the IGP is sitting inside the chipset I don't
know how it is communicating. AGP 8...@pci might indicate emulation of
AGP?

Well in my post #23, I've written that the bug occurs with the nvidia-

nvidia-driver.

However, I recently upgraded to Karmic and the error is gone. Using the
default recommended nvidia driver 185 there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] [NEW] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2009-11-07 Thread Irihapeti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After installing Xubuntu Karmic on this laptop, I'm having regular
Xserver lockups, as in once per session. The mouse pointer still moves,
but clicking does nothing and the keyboard is disabled. I can use the
Alt-SysRq-REISUB commands, but the reboot that follows doesn't complete.
The only way to clear this is by a complete power-down. The time before
the freeze occurs varies but would usually be less than 15 minutes.

I have tried using the standard Xserver-xorg-video-intel with DRI
disabled, and a retro version of the same package, but the problem
persists. Also tried adding nomodeset to the kernel command line when
booting, which likewise made no difference.

Hardy has run without issue on this machine, and as far as I can tell,
Jaunty also. (I ran it for an hour or more from the live CD without
problems.)

The batchbuffer dump archive is attached. I reinstalled the standard
Xserver-xorg-video-intel package for this test.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477264] [NEW] LVDS flickers continuously

2009-11-07 Thread Jukka Alasalmi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The local flat panel of the laptop flickers continuously when booting
the laptop in the X. I have checked the refresh rate and display mode
with xrandr, and I didn't notice anything wrong. The text consoles are
working correctly. I haven't tried to attach external monitor. This
issue occurred after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10. The flickering is
continuous and of very high frequency - possibly 1/2 frames are drawn
completely black and the rest correctly.

Often also the display output is displaced a bit to the right, and the
image is wrapped around so that the right part of the display contents
is drawn on the left.

Sometimes going quickly to the text consoles and back to X fixes this
issue, but sometimes it does not have any effect, even when repeating
several times. Also, after doing this, even if the flicker stops, the
display output may still be displaced, but sometimes also this is fixed
when going to the console and back.

AGP 8...@pci might indicate emulation of
AGP?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477309] [NEW] When trying to save new X configuration, I get an error message: Failed to parse existing x config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

2009-11-07 Thread Henning_Vejlen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

This is a new bug seen in Ubuntu 9.10. In previous versions I was able
to save x configuration with the help of the sudo command.

But here it looks like the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf has a changed
structure or layout, at least compared to what Nvidia expects.

Your solution is... complex, especially regarding the obtaining of the
mesa packages and locking them. The libgl1-mesa-dri/libgl1-mesa-glx
packages can be easily obtained from packages.ubuntu.com. I wrote a
short explanation of how to fix the problem in bug 385539 and a more
detailed expalanation here: http://www.ode2.com/?p=44

2009-11-07 Thread roadSurfer
Thanks bjaglin, I followed your steps and performance seems to have
improved a bit. Compiz benchmark now reports 130+fps (which is what I
had under Jaunty) but Tux Racer is still down at 2fps (I can't recall
what is was under Jaunty) so I think there are still underlying
problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433326] Re: [i945g] maximum resolution: 800x600

2009-11-07 Thread SM
There is some confusion associated with this bug.

Firstly, when the bug applies, higher modes than 800x600 are simply not
available. So, dfrevert's comment on 2009-10-18, does not apply to this bug
because xrandr -s 1024x768 will give no such mode available.

Secondly, this problem does not happen (at least didn't for me in two
different monitors) if the monitor supports EDID
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_display_identification_data).
That's why I think most people don't have THIS bug.

Thidly, looking at Xorg log, it's clear that higher resolution modes are
eliminated due to vertical refresh rates being out of range for an
unknown monitor.

Fourthly, I cannot confirm now, but as I recall, when I had this intel
945 card on a non EDID compatible monitor, even if I manually
configured Xorg.conf with a Monitor section, specifying decent refresh
rates, this would be ignored, and I would still be limited to low
resolution. I'll confirm that as soon as possible. And if this is the
case, then the issue is with the driver ignoring the Monitor section,
even if EDID information is not available.

Other than that, when the resolution is ok, X is well accelerated
glxgears gives me 60fps on a Celeron Mobile 1.6Ghz with this board and
user interface is smooth.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic

2009-11-07 Thread Kai-Simon
and here the only file I found in /var/log/gdm
Hope that helps.

You're writing that if you're doing reinstalls of the driver it *should* do
that for you.
Sorry for my ignorance but what would be the easiest way to do that? So far I
try to install the driver via jockey-kde, where now after it had been
downloaded and installed the first time I can only choose to activate it if
it's not...
The names of all the packages I've installed that got nvidia in their name
are the following:
nvidia-173-modaliases
nvidia-96-modaliases
nvidia-180-kernel-source
nvidia-180-libvdpau
nvidia-glx-180
nvidia-180-modaliases
nvidia-common
nvidia-settings
Would it help to remove some of these (if so, which)?

Thanks for any help so far.

Kai-Simon

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477357] Re: Tiling performance issues on intel integrated graphics

2009-11-07 Thread newbrain
After a complete shutdown-restart the issue has disappeared. Note that a single
xorg restart didn't cure it in the first place.
If I'm able to reproduce the bug again, I'll change the status.

I reported this as a bug (#459729 -

received no response at all. This bug is painfully noticeable with Gimp
where you are trying to use a bush to work on a painting/photo/whatever.
When you use the brush with the touchpad, it will fly across the screen
consistently.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451194] Re: [i965gm] Session active, not inhibited, screen idle notification after screen blacks out during normal operation

2009-11-07 Thread scnaifeh
I don't know if this is the same bug. For the first time today, i am
experiencing the same problem - having the screen blank out during
normal use and getting the icon with the Session active, not inhibited,
screen idle

My graphics card is NVidia, however, and I am using the non-free driver,
v. 185.18.36 (installed via ubuntu's Hardware Drivers applet).

I am on Karmic x86_64 (kernel 2.6.31-14) (fresh install a few days ago,
all updates applied).

I have not changed my x configuration lately, so I don't know what it
could be.

(I have been typing with the icon showing and my display dimmed per my
power settings for idle times, but just now, as I typed the line about
the x configuration, the icon disappeared and my display undimmed, so
apparently, something woke the power daemon up, but I have no idea
what).

dmesg doesn't look like it contains anything useful (and there was no
change in it when the machine work up just now).

I previously had jaunty on the same machine, and never had this problem.

I think, this bug is the same as #469172. Aisleriot eats up all memory

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV280

I posted my xorg.conf configuration here:

it works perfectly for me, and graphics performance seem better than in

Thanks Bryce, I couldn't tell because I wasn't really sure what was
happening and the original poster didn't provide a whole lot of information
that I could see what was going on. Anyways, I did get my setup working
within a few minutes of using that xorg.conf.failsave and installed nvidia
proprietary binaries, but I was concerned that more people may be having
this issue so I posted as much as I could.

I got the same issue on Archlinux and solved it patching the kernel with

it is now working with KMS without any corruption.

Hope that helps

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2009-11-07 Thread Irihapeti
I've attached both Xorg.0.conf and Xorg.0.log.old, because I'm not sure
which one, if any, is the one needed.

The laptop was rebooted immediately after the freeze (via ssh) and hung
while rebooting, and then again after powering off completely. (I
retrieved the log files just now via PartedMagic liveCD.) So maybe the
necessary info has been overwritten. :(

I can run the whole batchbuffer thing again and include the Xorg.0.log
file this time, if it will help.

Would be nice to see in the official repositories for karmic and lucid
as nvidia-glx-190. People can choose to use either the 185 or 190

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xorg

My screen will flash black repeatedly and the mouse and sound will freeze.
Sometimes it will only flash a couple times and come back to normal, but
often it will keep flashing many times and remain frozen until x crashes.
  While it's frozen I can't ctrl-alt-f1 to another terminal. I've only
noticed it happening when I'm using firefox, but that's the vast majority of
my computer use so I'm not sure that's relevant. Sometimes when it comes
back from a flashing episode the window will be scrambled to some extent.
There's no specific event that I'm aware of that triggers this.

I tried to include everything you'd need in this report, please let me know
if there's more that's necessary. (Unfortunately I'd have to wait until it
happens again to gather that, and it's unpredictable)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 473114] Re: Iiyama monitor's native resolution does not display properly

2009-11-07 Thread Anna S.
I tried that (deactivated and uninstalled fglrx, used that xorg.conf -
merci beaucoup pour ça) and... again it hung on startup, just before the
splash screen. I had to revert to the initial xorg.conf. The xorg radeon
driver still does not work properly with this default xorg.conf at
1920x1080 in Karmic, so I reinstalled fglrx at least temporarily. (I
don't know much about xorg.conf files, so I don't know what else to
try.)

It's really quite strange since this monitor worked fine on Jaunty, I
didn't have to install or configure anything manually.

Thanks for all your help Alexandre!

Switching to AccelMethod EXA removes the artifacts, but is terribly
slow. I've downgraded to Jaunty's xserver-xorg-video-ati and -radeon
drivers, and have no problems with the AccelMethod XAA now.

Thank you for seeking to improve Ubuntu. It seems you have filed a bug
against X using the new System Testing utility. Unfortunately, this tool
is filing bugs without collecting sufficient information to properly
diagnose the issues. I wish we could reply to every report to guide you
to gather the correct information, but it happens that so many people
are using this testing feature to file bug reports that we simply cannot
keep up with the influx. I'm replying in bulk so I can get everyone
pointed into a direction most likely to result in getting you a useful
workaround and us a complete bug report that can be solved.

Most of these problems describe issues that have documented
troubleshooting procedures, so perhaps the most helpful thing I can
do is point you to them:

   http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting

These guides explain why things break the way they do, and in some cases
 provide workarounds.

I would ask that you first go through the appropriate guide for your
problem, particularly if you are having problems with resolution,
crashes, fonts, or blank screen issues, and then file a bug report using
 the following command:

ubuntu-bug xorg

This collects more detailed information than the System Testing tool
does. Please also write a detailed explanation, indicating when you
first discovered the problem, analysis steps you've done, workarounds
 that work, and so on.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 327963] Re: Error activating XKB configuration with MacBook keyboard model

2009-11-07 Thread The Loeki
I was having the exact same issue, but then with a Macbook 79 model
keyboard (Macbook/Pro Intl) and the US International with AltGr dead
keys.

One of the commenters in the FreeDesktop bug correctly notes that there
might actually be little use for these symbols anymore, but since I'm
not exactly an XKB guru I find it too hard to tell.

Anway, I added
partial alphanumeric_keys
xkb_symbols altgr-intl{
include us(altgr-intl)
};

to /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh_vndr/us and the error went away.
Everything works as it should AFAICT.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 249222] [NEW] Totem and VLC crash when doing just about anything with visual effects enabled

2009-11-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am using Hardy Heron (32-bit). When trying to watch videos on Totem
(and VLC) the program crashes sporadically when visual effects are
enabled. It could be when I maximize, restore, move the mouse while in
fullscreen mode, etc. This is what the console displays when in happens:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 371 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 249222] Re: Totem and VLC crash when doing just about anything with visual effects enabled

2009-11-07 Thread Travis Watkins
This is not a compiz issue but rather the video card running out of
memory due to compiz running. The driver needs a proper memory manager
in order for this to work correctly. The ati/radeon driver at least has
this when using KMS but I don't think the older nvidia drivers do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442361] Re: [i945gme] X displays black screen after plugging in external monitor and launching Display from System - Preferences

2009-11-07 Thread Chris
A bit more info:

  * Unplugging the external display doesn't cause the X-server settings
to be updated. Newly-created windows sometimes open on the non-existent
external display.

  * Switching the video mode using the keyboard function key triggers
the crash. It's not necessary to use the display dialog to trigger it.

I tried ubuntu 9.10 32bit standart and pae kernel, both are not working. Still
the same problems, with 2GB of RAM everything works fine, 4GB of RAM give me a
