[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444139] Re: (Needs KMS) Background and full screen apps don't show up when Normal Visual Effects on (Radeon 7500)

2009-11-08 Thread Karel Marik
Reply to Termod Volden

Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE]
(Secondary) (rev 01)

Option AGPSize 8 = doesn't work (black screen with compiz)
Option AGPSize 16 or 32 = desktop image is back

BTW - what AGPSize setting is correct? How do I determine it?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 478149] [NEW] White windows after resume from suspend, Karmic 9.10

2009-11-08 Thread oleksiy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After resume from suspend some of the programs that were running before
lid was closed received white windows. They can be moved, closed, even
it looks like they are completely functional but just white. Screenshot
attached. This happens with both Nvidia versions available (173 and 185)
while both were working fine on the same laptop with Ubuntu 9.04. Tried
installing backport-modules - the same.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444139] Re: (Needs KMS) Background and full screen apps don't show up when Normal Visual Effects on (Radeon 7500)

2009-11-08 Thread bagl0312
Putting simply:

 Option AGPSize 32

as suggested by Tormod doesn't work for me.
gnome-appeareance-properties refuses to switch desktop effects on.

If I add:
Option BusType PCI
desktop effects can be enabled but gdm is unstable: the screen gets all black
if I open a few firefox windows.

Increasing AGPSize to 64 works but I get a kernel panic few minutes
after logon if I open several windows.

To have a stable system I have to put all the options below in the
Device section:

Section Device
Driver ati
Identifier Radeon 9200
Option BusType PCI
Option AccelMethod EXA
Option MigrationHeuristic greedy
Option AGPSize 64
EndSection

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 478160] [NEW] Xorg sometimes sees signal 11 after upgrade to Karmic

2009-11-08 Thread Odd A Olsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrade the x server usually crash during boot with sig 11. I can
start X with startx and it works just fine. I have never had any
stability problem with this computer before the upgrade and do not
believe this is a hardware problem.

Other problems after upgrade, using KDE: hibernate and sleep do not turn
off the computer and shutdown button is not present or disappears
during session, I don't think this is related to the reported bug, but
anyhow...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444139] Re: (Needs KMS) Background and full screen apps don't show up when Normal Visual Effects on (Radeon 7500)

2009-11-08 Thread Tormod Volden
It is useful if everybody posting results also includes the output from
lspci -nn | grep VGA and the amount of video RAM they have.

Since different workarounds are needed among you, there must be several
issues mixed into this report. Bagl0312, I think you should open a new
bug report since you need all these options.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 473114] Re: Iiyama monitor's native resolution does not display properly

2009-11-08 Thread Anna S.
OK, as before, I removed fglrx entirely, modified xorg.conf and
rebooted. Finally, some success! I can now use Firefox in the native
resolution. (Otherwise still no background, no desktop icons, only the
toolbars, and windows open/close/move very slowly.) I've attached the
Xorg.0.log for this boot with that xorg.conf, if it can help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 478201] [NEW] GDM and subsequent sessions ignoring Xkb settings, startx from console works

2009-11-08 Thread Vit Herman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Hi,

after doing a clean install of Karmic on my new laptop, I noticed a very
annoying bug - all my Xkb settings are ignored. I normally use us
keymap as my primary, and cz with qwerty variant as secondary and
use both shift keys to switch between them. I tried using both
/etc/default/console-setup:

XKBMODEL=evdev
XKBLAYOUT=us,cz
XKBVARIANT=,qwerty
XKBOPTIONS=grp:shift_toggle

and XML file with appropriate keys in /etc/hal/fdi/policy (that worked
in Jaunty):

match key=info.capabilites contains=input.keys
  merge key=input.x11_options.XkbRules type=stringbase/merge
  merge key=input.x11_driver type=stringkbd/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.XkbModel type=stringpc105/merge
  match key=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name
 string=Linux
merge key=input.x11_driver type=stringevdev/merge
merge key=input.x11_options.XkbModel type=stringevdev/merge
  /match

  merge key=input.x11_options.XkbLayout type=stringus,cz/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.XkbOptions
type=stringgrp:shift_toggle/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.XkbVariant type=string,qwerty/merge
/match

n get this behaviour if I use for example xfce4-xkb-plugin, getting it
to work with plain X11 (for example in OpenBox sessions) seems to be
impossible.

I'm reasonably sure this isn't wrong configuration on my part, because when
booting to a console session and then doing startx, everything works as it
should. If I however use a graphic login (GDM), they keyboard settings are
busted - starting with the login screen (can't change keymap when entering my
username). The keyboard settings get passed to X.org (they're shown in the xorg
log), but ignored - doing setxkbmap -print results in:
dra...@yarlagash:~$ setxkbmap -print
 xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include evdev+aliases(qwerty) };
xkb_types { include complete  };
xkb_compat{ include complete  };
xkb_symbols   { include pc+us+inet(evdev) };
xkb_geometry  { include pc(pc104) };
 };

After setting it manualy with setxkbmap -layout us,cz -variant
,qwerty -option grp:shift_toggle, it all works like I charm.

I guess I coud work around this by calling setxkbmap at start of every
session, but it doesn't sound like a kosher solution. I triggered this
bug with both Ubuntu and Xubuntu, however I'm not sure if it didn't
start manifesting only after apt-get install xubuntu-desktop in Ubuntu
- I did a clean install afterwards to make sure this isn't a side-effect
of the conversion.

I checked that this is not a ThinkPad-oddity bug by installing Slackware
13 on the same machine - it works there just fine (KDM as a login
manager there).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 473114] Re: Iiyama monitor's native resolution does not display properly

2009-11-08 Thread Alexandre
Oh la la, finally! LOL! Anyway, about the no background no icon stuff, it's
surely nautilus which didn't start, so when it happens, you just make Alt +
F2 and you type nautilus in the launch an application. I guess the
repetitive crashs of the xorg server, changed some stuff in the session
preferences, and so that's why nautilus didn't start.
Well, there is no error in your xorg.conf, only some little warnings which are
not so important. Direct rendering is enabled, so it should be ok now. Ah yeah,
just thinking about one thing for the slowness of the windows, just go in
Système -- Préférences -- Apparence, check the visual effects and select
Extra, then all your desktop and your windows will be handled directly by your
graphic card by AIGLX, so it will be faster.
Voilà, have a good sunday Anna.
PS: sorry for the bad english in all of this, but well i'm french, and so it's
not my native language.

I have found a workaround (for my machine at least).

It seems that enabling desktop emulation in the graphics tab of winecfg
at least allow programs using 3d acceleration to run and display.

I'd still rather that my fullscreen apps be fullscreen, however...

2009-11-08 Thread Daniel Kamm
I can confim this behaviour on Maxdata Pro i600 Notebook. After
upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 the display freezes and cannot be restarted
at all. The system is fully available from network (i.e. ssh shell) and
can be shut down or restarted. System load is ~1 although 100%idle on
CPU.

There is a stack trace in the messages log which shows, that this must
be a problem of the i915 driver:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 478253] [NEW] Switch user or guest session always hangs

2009-11-08 Thread Sergio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

With a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10, when i try to switch user or do a
guest session, it goes to a black screen and after a few seconds, the
keyboard stops responding (num lock, caps, lock, etc.).

It does not respond to ctrl+back+esc and also cannot change to another
terminal.

It happens also when trying to do a switch user when the session is
blocked.

I have the Visual effects off and the official fglrx driver than install
Ubuntu for my Ati Radeon 3650HD.

It work well in Ubuntu 9.04 (upgraded from 8.04).

I just realised, this also happens on Karmic Koala Live-CD (just wanted
to do a fresh install). So the i915/855 problem is not only depending on
an upgrade from Intrepid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 473114] Re: Iiyama monitor's native resolution does not display properly

2009-11-08 Thread Anna S.
Good idea about Nautilus, but in fact it was running - I've attached a
screenshot just to show it.

Your tip about the Appearance/Visual Effects preferences helped discover a new
problem :o) So, here are the steps I went through:
Original state: xorg-radeon driver with Alexandre's latest xorg.conf, native
res 1920x1080 in Karmic, display as shown in screenshot with Visual Effects
prefs set at Normal. Slow windows on open/close/move.
- Changed Visual Effects prefs to Extra. The windows became a bit faster, but
still slower than before (meaning that they're slower than on Jaunty, and
slower than with the fglrx driver on Karmic).
- Changed Visual Effects back to Normal just to compare again, windows were
indeed a bit slower than with Extra.
- Changed Visual Effects to None. My background and icons appeared! (A
screenshot for reference, I can only add one attachment, so it's a link to my
site: http://www.fraise.net/images/PLE2407HDS-radeon-bg.jpg )

The important step, because it caused a session crash and threw me to the login
screen (the crash was replicable):
- Changed Visual Effects prefs from None to Normal. Ubuntu displayed the
message Searching for drivers, then the session crashed.
- I logged in and tried that step again. Second session crash, this time
without the Searching for drivers message.
- I logged in and, again, tried changing to Normal visual effects. This time
no crash, but the background reverted to blank and a message asked me if I
wanted to keep the changes (no... Visual Effects at None is more usable).

Voilà. (Also, Alexandre, pas de soucis pour l'anglais ! Moi c'est
l'inverse, je suis américaine et j'habite en France... pas toujours
évident, les langues étrangères :) )

2009-11-08 Thread Sergio
I've uninstalled fglrx and also the DVB-T drivers and here are the

the screen goes blank, the mouse hangs and the keyboard keeps responding but
i'm unable to switch to a terminal o end the x session
 * Switch user: i click another user and works. when i close this session, the
same as before (blank screen, mouse hangs, etc.)
 * Log off: i can log into the same user or another user without problem

Concerning the X crash: this should have been fixed a while ago (see bug
#401067), if you have this issue with an up-to-date system would you
please collect a backtrace (see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing)
and open a new bug?

For the rest from what I can see the problem is fixed in newer x and
mesa packages (and maybe others?) - i.e. works well in fedora - but they
aren't included in this release of ubuntu.

2009-11-08 Thread Partha
nh2,

No problems! :)

Yes, I think the bug is the same. I had not noticed the connection
with the usage of two fingers. If you are using any brush (or eraser,
etc.) in Gimp, you are holding down the left button and using another
finger to paint with the brush. Then, bang it flies across the screen
leaving a long streak across the picture. Luckily we have cntrl-Z, but
it gets old pretty fast.

Thanks,
Partha

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 345119] Re: [i965 X3100] X freezes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional

2009-11-08 Thread lpad
it's not an xserver-xorg-video-intel related bug. cuz I tested different
versions of intel drivers and system freezes ONLY on the latest kernel
2.6.31-14-generic

on 2.6.28-13-generic it WORKS like a CHARM!!

it defo to do with i915 kernel module, something wrong with it.. :-(

also I noticed that latest intel driver which in karmic is kinda broken
(gives me garbled screen when switching from X to console and back) so
I'm using this:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance#Reverting%20to%20the%20intrepid%20version%20of%20the%20driver

also If you will add to boot options acpi=off than your system will work
without ANY freezes, try that and report back, so AGAIN its defo
something wrong with the kernel drivers :)

2009-11-08 Thread mangwills
The attached Xorg.0.log.old is the log file when the screen corruption
occurs. This happens when there is no /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file.

With the attached Xorg.conf with log file Xorg.0.log, there is no screen
corruption.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 462939] Re: [i855GM] Lid close with intel 82852/855GM provokes black screen, loss of control and overheat

2009-11-08 Thread kludge
reconstructing xorg.conf from memory (on another machine not booted and
i gotta run out the house):

Section Device

Identifier Builtin Default intel device 0
# I stole the identifier from Xorg.0.conf run with no xorg.conf
Driver intel
Option ForceEnablePipeA True

EndSection

...and that's it; everything else is autodetected. for thoroughness
sake, i ought to test without it, but i haven't yet.

also, it's a driver bug. drivers are part of the kernel, but also their
own separate projects.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 407587] Re: [i865] karmic: 865g is pretty unstable

2009-11-08 Thread Edmundo
Well, I think we are not through with the problems with 865. More often
than not when the box is booting, X won't start and I won't get access
to the VTs when that happens. I can shut it down gracefully by pressing
power button or by using alt-sysRq keys. From another box through SSH I
get to see this on dmesg:

[ 85.663792] [drm:i915_wait_request] *ERROR* something (likely vbetool)
disabled interrupts, re-enabling
[ 85.663820] render error detected, EIR: 0x0010

[ 85.663838] render error detected, EIR: 0x0010

Just in case, here's the backtrace of X:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444139] Re: (Needs KMS) Background and full screen apps don't show up when Normal Visual Effects on (Radeon 7500)

2009-11-08 Thread tastyracer
lspci -nn | grep VGA reports following:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon
9200 PRO] [1002:5960] (rev 01)

Also 128MB, essentially identical to bagl0312

Fresh install of Karmic - I had tried all other suggestions but these
screwed it up too much so thought I'd start again and wait for a proper
fix. Just setting AGPsize seemed so simple and easily-reversed - and it
worked.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433326] Re: [i945g] maximum resolution: 800x600

2009-11-08 Thread girto
How does X proceed when no EDID info is available?

IIRC, there was an option in Gutsy Gibbon (or was it Hardy?) to choose
the monitor in the display applet. Generic LCD panel options were there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433326] Re: [i945g] maximum resolution: 800x600

2009-11-08 Thread girto
@SM,

Could this be of any help?
(tormod)

http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8091551postcount=1208
 Please RTFM thank you
...

No. Was it of any help to you?

Fourthly, I cannot confirm now, but as I recall, when I had this intel
945 card on a non EDID compatible monitor, even if I manually configured
Xorg.conf with a Monitor section, specifying decent refresh rates,
this would be ignored, and I would still be limited to low resolution.
I'll confirm that as soon as possible. And if this is the case, then the
issue is with the driver ignoring the Monitor section, even if EDID
information is not available.

Obviously, what you had encountered, if confirmed, is not this bug. This
bug's workaround, as stated in the OP, is specifying monitor properties
in xorg.conf. Please open another bug report for your case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 345119] Re: [i965 X3100] X freezes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional

2009-11-08 Thread lpad
to be completely honest with latest xserver-xorg-intel-2.9 I'm still
encountering problems with 2.6.28-13, so I used this:

xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.6.3-0ubuntu9.3_i386.deb (from jaunty I think,
not sure) - it works without any artifacts
