[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 425372] Re: GeForce 7050 PV does not work on karmic alpha-5 - shows video corruption

2009-11-12 Thread luca_ing
OBSERVATION:

Happens to me too.

Datapoint: lspci says the Adapter is:
nVidia Corporation C68 [GeForce 7050 PV / nForce 630a] (rev a2)

I got a garbled screen on X startup, but I could drop to console and manually
install nvidia-glx the way detailed in comment #9 .
I didn't try to boot into safe mode, so no idea whether that would have worked.

EXPECTATION:
X should start without trouble, perhaps by falling back to a safe default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 481195] [NEW] Vertical arrangement of two monitors hangs Xorg. (monitors.xml)

2009-11-12 Thread Grzegorz
Public bug reported:

Laptop 1400x1050, attached monitor, 1280x1024 - vertical arrangement. Monitor
is above, laptop below.
I'd like to setup it like this via the Preferences-Screen. After such
arrangement Xorg hangs.
It's only possible to recover by jumping to text console, editing monitors.xml,
then kill Xorg.

It's possible to almost-arrange by reducing starting point of lower
(laptop) screen from 1024 to 1023, but after such operation windows
cannot be moved between monitors. Increasing to 1025 - is also almost
nice, because windows can be moved between, but after maximizing there
is no title bar accessible.

Horizontal arrangement works ok, so I assume it's a bug.

I add
monitors.xml.ok
monitos.xml.bad
top
Xorg logs

This also occurs in Kubuntu updated to the same point . and also if
stellarium is built from source . In both kubuntu and Ubuntu the
corruption does not occur in karmic but does as soon as the install is
updated to lucid .

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444674] Re: Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment

2009-11-12 Thread Timo Jyrinki
It seems I can confirm this on a Dell D600. Even xorg-edgers _lucid_
(including mouse, evdev, synaptics, xorg-server 1.7.99 etc.) does not
seem to solve the problem. Tried around with some HAL policy changes as
well (with hal/gdm stop+start cycle), but didn't find anything I could
switch that would help somehow (evdev - synaptics and vice versa,
either did not help or something stopped working).

2009-11-12 Thread misha wolf
Attached are the requested files. Also, i've noticed that some rare
system events still print windows that are messed up even without
compositing. See the attached jpg for an example of a network state
notice. (attaching to an access point) Again, the jpg is a photo of
what happens when compositing is OFF.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415682] Re: Stuck with KDE Cursor after installing ubuntu-desktop

2009-11-12 Thread Miguel Branco
I had the same problem too, when installing kubuntu-desktop on top of Ubuntu.
It seems to be fixed by running:

sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme

and selecting /usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursor.theme (it was 7 in my
machine)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 470422] Re: [Q45] 1600x1200 resolution is not available on the 2nd monitor (it was on ubuntu 9.04)

2009-11-12 Thread ubu...@szantocsalad.hu
I downloaded the new kernel, and I can set the display 1600x1200 I was
happy and excited... then I tried to install the free VMWare Player. It
first complained about the missing kernel headers for 2.6.32-020632rc6
which I donwloaded from the same location as the kernel. Then VMWare
appeared in the start menu, but at first start it wanted to compile
further components which failed. I uninstalled the new kernel re started
the VMWare installation and it worked fine. Given that the kernel is an
RC is it possible that it is not correct?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 445191] Re: Enabling proprietory ATI driver prevents X from starting

2009-11-12 Thread James Pursey
One more update. What I reported in my last comment was repeated today.
After a routine bug check, Ubuntu failed to start. I once again had to
drop down to a command prompt and switch off acpi to get it going again.

Cheers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 481349] [NEW] Karmic: intel i915 crash (locked up - had to power off)

Hi.

After leaving my machine on over lunch (1hr) when I came back the

I had to power off / on .

I do have an opengl screen saver (which had in the past been fine)

syslog shows the following:-

What's needed is a way to make this sort of adjustment without going
in and directly editing xorg.conf, such as making a selection at boot
time, as with some older live CDs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 481371] [NEW] inverted colours when using X Window System (X11/XShm/Xv)

2009-11-12 Thread mewt
Public bug reported:

Hi,

After the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, colours in movies playing in totem
or vlc or anything else are appearing as inverted when using X Window
System (X11/XShm/Xv) as output plugin. If I change the output plugin
from gstreamer-properties to X Window System (No Xv), colours appear
fine but movies are slow and choppy then.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this ?

I can attach any logs you need, Just ask

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444674] Re: Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment

2009-11-12 Thread Magnus Carlsson
I suspect this bug is related (but perhaps not identical) to the problem
that Andy Isaacson reported on here:

  http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg04193.html

Most of the times, I can unstuck the button and get the missing
button-release event by moving the pointer with the touchpad (but not
with the pointing stick).

I booted the kernel with i8042.debug=1, and looked at the output from
i8042.c in /var/log/kern.log. For normal ButtonPress and ButtonRelease
events, I get six bytes of data (details attached):

press: ff 69 28 29 5d 00
release: ff 69 28 28 5d 00

But occasionally when I release the button, I get what looks like an
additional ButtonPress event, plus an additional six bytes of data:

  ff 69 28 29 5d 00 ff 00 00 08 00 7f

This results in a missed ButtonRelease event.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 470422] Re: [Q45] 1600x1200 resolution is not available on the 2nd monitor (it was on ubuntu 9.04)

2009-11-12 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Your test confirms that this particular problem is fixed upstream,
most likely by the patch mentioned in the upstream bug report. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds for more information
about the mainline kernel builds.

I don't know enough about VMWare or the kernel to tell if the VMWare
problems is a bug or simply due to something ubuntu-specific which is
not included in the mainline build. You may try Lucid, which currently
has a kernel based on 2.6.32-rc6 (see
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/info/kernel-version-map.html). It
is very early in the Lucid release cycle, so don't expect it to be
stable, but if it starts all right for you and the problem is there as
well, please file a bug report using `ubuntu-bug linux`.

You may also have some luck trying VMWare forums with the specific
error messages you get during compilation. They may tell you what the
problem is.

I can confirm that on Karmic (9.10), this must be a legacy problem
though because after building a quite recent xorg from the xorg modular
git rep. xdmx works fine. I do have problems with glx though with the
nvidia drivers. Using them on the xorg server works fine, but launching
xdmx and then using e.g. glxinfo crashes xdmx.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476817] Re: [i855] [karmic] X freezes with intel 855GM videocard

2009-11-12 Thread Julian J. M.
I've also tried acpi=off and it fixes the freezing problem... But just
because, at least on my system, it disables 3D acceleration completely.

I don't use desktop effects for testing, but Google Earth. If 3D is
enabled, I load Google Earth and X freezes in the first minute. With
acpi=off kernel parameter, GE tells me that it's using software
renderer, thus no freeze, although it's painfully slow ;)

There is nothing relevant in dmesg or the X log when it freezes... Is
there anything we can do to help developers track this issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399636] Re: [i915gm] karmic 2.6.31-2 and -3 lid closing blacks screen until reboot on thinkpad r52

2009-11-12 Thread Maarten Wisse
I can confirm this bug for a Dell Latitude D620 with an GMA 950 Intel
chip. However, on this machine, the trick with Fn-F8 does not work.
Reboot or putting the machine to sleep with Fn-Esc and then power it up,
fires up the screen again.

I am affected by this bug, too, and it definitely needs to be fixed. I
can't believe that this bug got into the release, especially since it
was reported 6 weeks ago. If you need any more information or testers of
fixes, please tell me how I can help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395476] Re: nvidia sets HUE to -1000

2009-11-12 Thread D Becker
The gstreamer-properties workaround fixes the problem with things that
use gstreamer with xv, but I'm still seeing this problem with other
applications that use xv -- so it looks to me like the problem is not in
totem or gstreamer. MPlayer, for example, shows this problem with -vo
xv, but not when using other output drivers - Again, only on my
GTX280M, but not on my GeForce Go 7700.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477149] Re: Failsafe X support added in proposed upload still doesn't work

2009-11-12 Thread b2ag
I have a problem and wonder if it has something in common with this bug.
I have had karmic-purposed sources on and after one of the last updates
Xorg keeps sending me to a failsafe-session instead of starting up
properly. I hardly understand whats the problem, because restarting kdm
results in X is coming up with the proper driver (not low graphics).

b2ag:~# grep xorg /var/cache/debconf/config.dat
zsh: exit 1 grep xorg /var/cache/debconf/config.dat

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 441408] Re: [MASTER] Mouse jumps to bottom corner on click in fullscreen games. New mouses (A4Tech). Related to DGA / DGAMOUSE in SDL.

2009-11-12 Thread Riot777
export SDL_VIDEO_X11_DGAMOUSE=0 urbanterror --- this workaround is
not ideal solution, I'm still having occasional mouse jerky movement.
That's pretty strange as in Ubuntu 9.04 my mouse worked like a charm, no
jerky movement no, jumps to corners. This problem probably affect all
A4Tech X7 series mice.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 481514] [NEW] since last update Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode

2009-11-12 Thread Ákos Mattiassich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This happened after update following packages:
$ grep xorg /var/log/aptitude
xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu9 - 1:7.4+3ubuntu10
xserver-xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu9 - 1:7.4+3ubuntu10
xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.4+3ubuntu9 - 1:7.4+3ubuntu10
xserver-xorg-video-all 1:7.4+3ubuntu9 - 1:7.4+3ubuntu10

I can't get rid of low-graphics mode, if I choose Exit to console login, my
monitor displays only an error message, that signal is out of range.
Now i can communicate with my PC only via ssh.

Nope, this wouldn't cause that issue.

I have had karmic-purposed sources on and after one of the last updates
Xorg keeps sending me to a failsafe-session instead of starting up
properly. I hardly understand whats the problem, because restarting kdm
results in X is coming up with the proper driver (not low graphics).

something is seriously wrong with compiz / gnome / intel 950 card... and
 yet it worked before.

If the solution is to use the older driver,  then by all means have the
old driver be part of the initial install.  I noted before (and still
firmly believe) than you can't have someone new to Ubuntu throw in that
live CD .. then be faced with a complete lockup of their machine.

You just need one influential blogger to go out and say that happened on
their box... and bingo.. Ubuntu will be known as lockup central.

Now I have successful upgraded 7 machines in this office to Ubuntu 9.10
.. not a hitch.. it's just that machine that runs the Intel 950 graphic
accelerator.   The problem is that it was a very popular card...  so the
chances are this is a bigger problem... much bigger than what is being
reported because the machine locks up to the point where it can't
report... meaning you're not getting any automated crash reports from
it.. because the machine doesn't crash.. it locks.

This is my problem --  I can't boot in Gnome proper -- must use failsafe ..
Just did an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04 ... upgrade went ok..  then
within 30 seconds in Gnome.. it freezes... freezes to the point where I can't
even move the mouse, type anything..  must do hard reboot.

Now Gnome failsafe works fine,  I installed KDE to see if that works.. no
 problem...  just Gnome.

I can't even see what the problem is because the computer locks up to the
point where a hard reboot is needed.

 It's a Compaq Presario - Celeron D
 Intel 950 Video Card
 1.5 GB ram

I cannot provide you with any more information regarding it because honestly
the computer locks up to the point where I can't reach terminal or click on
anything to find out what is wrong.

Now I am not a big fan of having to use Gnome Failsafe...   I can provide you
any information you need when the computer is in Gnome failsafe.. but I
cannot report squat when it locks up in Gnome

Worth Nothing,  this machine ran Ubuntu 9.04 without fail or errors...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2009-11-12 Thread Adam J. Lincoln
I tried passing nomodeset to the kernel on boot to disable KMS, but
still get identical freezes. I will post a tarball of debugging info as
soon as I can. (Desktop effects have been off the whole time I've seen
this bug.)

Interestingly, while 1280x1024 resolution is not available anymore (and
was available under jaunty!), it becomes available if I pass nomodeset
to the kernel. Same freezes, though.

I also tried the xorg-edgers ppa with both the stock karmic kernel and
with the newest mainline kernel from kernel-ppa. With xorg-edgers and
the stock karmic kernel, I get identical freezes. With the newest
mainline kernel from kernel-ppa and xorg-edgers, I get a freeze that
behaves somewhat differently and seems to happen more frequently - plus
there are i915 errors printed on the first virtual console about
rendering errors with this kernel/xorg combination. If I have a chance
I can submit tarballs of debugging info for all combinations of
kernel/xorg I've tried, but I'm unsure that it's the same bug.

I am open to any other advice or debugging techniques no matter how off-
the-wall.
