[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476817] Re: [i855] [karmic] X freezes with intel 855GM videocard

2009-11-19 Thread Willem Ligtenberg
OK, I did try just upgrading the kernel, which didn't help.
I have tried 2.6.32-rc7 from the mainline kernels. However, the description of
xorg-edgers worries me. This the laptop that I work on, so I rather have a non
freezing X, without sound, 3D acceleration, than a non working laptop.
Could I just add the ppa to my sources and update the packages? And if that
fails, roll them back without any harm? Or is it more difficult? (If it is this
easy, and I will always be able to revert to the status I am in now, I will
give it a try)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-11-19 Thread krona
I hope it's not rejected. I understand the desire for the correct
solution, and on the face of it you could argue that the fglrx driver
should not have slow performance with the existing xorg code, however I
think we should be pragmatic given the facts. Lots of people want to use
the fglrx driver and want to use desktop effects. It's not nice to do
driver specific hacks but looking at it another way it's a bit like
having having to deal with different driver capabilities to provide
useable results, something that's not unusual in the real world of
software on any platform. I might be wrong but it doesn't seem that the
conditional patch would have lots of negative effects on many other
clients, I suppose with extensive testing the patch could show some
other issues. I guess the days of manually patching your own Linux
system are not over. I think I would have to get the latest source next
time and apply the patch and make sure I don't make the same mistake
with the package version!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2009-11-19 Thread kalessin
Update: I backed out xorg-edgers from my machine. Non-edgers driver does
indeed work without KMS, and acpi=off seems to stop the freezes.
nomodeset has no apparent effect.

Summary:
-freezes with nomodeset
-does _not_ freeze with acpi=off

Problems with acpi=off:
-no sound
-no wifi
-no power management
-possible other irq-related problems (since acpi is used to configure the
hardware interrupts nowadays)

I tested with current distribution kernel (2.6.31-15 I think), but
mainline kernel seems to behave more or less the same in this regard.

Note: additional tests by Andrea could actually be of interest, since he
runs the same hardware (Asus M2400N). My device has upgraded wifi
(ipw2200), but that should not matter.

BTW I have to concur with Andreas opinion: the fact that the current
Intel drivers have such severe problems on older hardware and no
developer ever seemed to deem it necessary to maintain stable support
for existing machines is quite upsetting. I have currently only two
options: to either downgrade to Hardy (at least until support is
dropped) or to throw away perfectly good hardware. Or is there a
possibility to disable the HAL detection of the graphics hardware, thus
forcing the machine to vesa graphics or something? That would be at
least a little help (I don't exactly need hardware acceleration on that
machine).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 478031] Re: Mouse buttons not registering clicks correctly

2009-11-19 Thread peter
It also happens here, Dell Precision M4400 running Ubuntu 9.10 (problem was
already present in 9.04).
xorg version is 1:7.4+3ubuntu7.

It only happens a few times a day, difficult to reproduce in xev.
I am mostly working with the mouse stick and its related mouse buttons. At some
point, the mouse pointer does not react on clicks from these buttons any more.
What mostly helps is pressing the (left) button associated with the touchpad.
There seems to be some interference between the buttons associated with the
stick and those associated with the touchpad. In some cases, however, only a
switch to the console via CTRL+ALT+F1 or even a restart of X helps.

I'm having the same kernel panic problem with my brand new desktop. I'm
using ATI Radeon HD 3200 controller integrated on motherboard (Gigabyte

If there's anything I can do please let me know.

Same problem here... except I have an ATI 4650 HD. Login screen appear
on the second monitor.

It's very annoying... it did work correctly under jaunty but since the
karmic update it doesn't work anymore.

It's strange that there is no way to configure GDM to show the login on
the correct display.

Also my mouse pointer appear in between the two monitor when starting...
but that was also the case on jaunty still there the login appeared on
the correct monitor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367941] [NEW] 3D acceleration broken on Sony Vaios with dual graphics adapters

2009-11-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Some older Sony Vaios have 2 graphics adapters, usually one from Intel
and one from nVidia (e.g. on the Vaio SZ650N, there is an Intel GM965
and an nVidia GeForce 8400M GS), which you can select with a hardware
switch when the notebook is off: so-called STAMINA and SPEED modes.

Ubuntu supports acceleration of both chips with open source (Intel) and
proprietary (nvidia) drivers, but installing both means that the 3D
setup gets clobbered. The current workaround is to have two xorg.conf
files, one for each adapter, a couple of backed-up 3D libraries and a
script that selects the right combination. The script in its current
state is specific to particular nvidia driver versions (even a minor
version change would break it), so is limited, but does work.

Jaunty is slightly more difficult to configure than Hardy as installing
nvidia-glx-180 removes /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 (needed for the Intel 965),
which is not replaced by simply reinstalling the deb for libgl1-mesa-
glx. Instead, you have to extract the file manually from the deb and
copy it to /usr/lib.

see http://doube.org/hardy-vaio.html#video and http://doube.org/jaunty-
vaio.html#video for details.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367941] xkbcomp.txt

2009-11-19 Thread Michael Doube

** Attachment added: xkbcomp.txt
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/35851233/xkbcomp.txt

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

- Jaunty is slightly more difficult to configure than Hardy as installing
- nvidia-glx-180 removes /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 (needed for the Intel 965),
- which is not replaced by simply reinstalling the deb for libgl1-mesa-
- glx. Instead, you have to extract the file manually from the deb and
- copy it to /usr/lib.
+ Karmic and Jaunty are slightly more difficult to configure than Hardy as

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-11-19 Thread aarons
Do we even know that this bug is on ATI's radar? I mean I see no
indication on the upstream bug report that it is being looked at
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1546

The fact that ATI hasn't responded to the bug is the most frustrating
part of all this. Either way though, I always end up regretting getting
a laptop with ATI video. Next time I'm making sure it has an nvidia
chip, since I've never had a problem with those linux drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476319] Re: X cannot start after upgrade to Karmic

2009-11-19 Thread Massimiliano Ballerini
** Description changed:

I have updated my Ubuntu to Karmik 2 days ago.

I had nvidia drivers 96 installed WORKING in Jaunty, and now it load up
the system and show the ubuntu logo white on black, then it show a
  flashing shell prompt.

It looks like gdm tries to start X in an infinite loop and X crashes
everytime to the shell. I press CTRL+ALT+CANC and the system reboot.

Accessing in recovery mode, i delete the xorg.conf, reboot and then
ubuntu working fine with mesa driver (but no dri).

I saw other bugs posted much like this one, but they result fixed.

The package with module actually compile and load on kernel
2.6.31-14-generic, but it looks like it's not compatible with last xorg
- server or some of it's components. I tried reinstall, but didn't work.

Bummer.

How did you get your uptime up to 5 days?

I have no idea; I didn't do anything special. I did accept any upgrades
_except_ kernel upgrades, as I'm already on 2.6.31.

This is my current xorg.conf file - I think it should also be the
default one (at least from previous Ubuntu 9.04 clean instalation),
because I didn't changed any options in it. So if there was some change
in Ubuntu 9.10, let me know if I should test Xorg autodetecting the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446316] Re: [KM400]Second logout leads to Xorg crashing

2009-11-19 Thread Chan Chung Hang Christopher
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/333 and
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/335 reports are NOT similar to
this bug. Both those reports are about failures to load KDE. I had no
problems loading KDE. I had a problem getting the kde login screen AFTER
the second logout which could only be worked around by sending a HUP
signal to kdm. I suppose you might even say kdm has a bug in not
handling stuck/dead X although I do not understand why there were no
problems with the first instance of logout.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485338] [NEW] X11 with Intel graphics freezing repeatedly

2009-11-19 Thread David Kelly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Ever since upgrading to Karmic Koala, my X server has been crashing on a
consistent basis, usually about every 2-3 days. When the crashes occur,
I am not doing anything out of the ordinary - usually just using
Firefox, a console, or working in Eclipse. When the freeze happens, my
mouse will move around the screen fine, but I am unable to click on
anything or use the keyboard. Only a complete reboot gets it working
again.

A few other notes: when first upgrading to Karmic Koala, my system would
boot into a black screen and not allow me to login. Based upon the bug
reports on this site I added i915.modeset=0 to GRUB.

I followed the instructions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze to collect debug
information and have attached it to this bug. Please let me know if you
need any other information.

2009-11-19 Thread raboof
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 378391 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378391

The kernel used is 2.6.30-8-generic - http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-
fix-touchpad-issues-after-karmic-upgrade.html suggests some problems
with touchpads are fixed in more recent kernels (2.6.31). Perhaps
something to try?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 429102] Re: [i945GM] Huge font size in KDE and GDM. Makes KDE unusable 8.04-9.10.

2009-11-19 Thread Antonio C. Costantino
I am also hit by this bug on a HP Compaq nx7400 with Intel 945GM.
Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/HugeFonts it seems
to be related to bad monitors. Since the several posts and bugs about
the issue, I am writing as reference the following workarounds:

1) For the giant fonts making the KDE session unusable, here it is how I solved
the issue:

- after booting, ctrl-alt-F6 to go to a terminal session;
- login with username and password;
- type sudo nano .kde/share/config/kcmfonts
- set DPI to 96 by editing the relevant line into: forceFontDPI=96
- save following on screen instructions
- restart the session or reboot

I adapted a suggestion made in this thread
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3107128.0
since the xterm trick did not work for me.

2) For KDM, similarly to the GDM case, one has to add -dpi 96 to the line
ServerCmd=/usr/bin/X in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc (all without brackets
obviously, I have just put them to distinguish relevant instructions from
normal text). This solve the giant fonts issue in the login screen. I have
adapted an old discussion from
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3087975.0

Hope it helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 459961] Re: radeon_dma.c:210: radeonRefillCurrentDmaRegion: Assertion `dma_bo-bo-cref == 1' failed.

2009-11-19 Thread Adam Buchbinder
I'm running mesa 7.6.0-1ubuntu4, and have 2GiB of system memory.

$ lspci -nn|grep [V]GA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY
[Radeon 7000/VE] [1002:5159]

I see this in my Xorg.0.log; let me know if I should be looking
elsewhere to count up my video memory:

(II) RADEON(0): Detected total video RAM=32768K, accessible=65536K (PCI
BAR=131072K)
(--) RADEON(0): Mapped VideoRAM: 32768 kByte (64 bit DDR SDRAM)

I first experienced this after upgrading to Karmic; the upgrade path was
7.4-0ubuntu3.2 (no problem) to 7.6.0-1ubuntu4 (problem).

I tested:

libe...@acer:~$ glxinfo |grep renderer
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 (RV280 5C61) 20090101 AGP 4x x86/MMX/SSE2

While running compiz hyperspace terminates immediately after showing the
first frame:

hyperspace: radeon_dma.c:210: radeonRefillCurrentDmaRegion: Assertion
`dma_bo-bo-cref == 1' failed.
Aborted

Without compiz hyperspace seems to work normal but as soon as the
hyperspace window is completely covered by another window the system
freezes.

Openarena seems to work fine here with and without compositing.

In Jaunty (Mesa 7.4) I did NOT encountered this problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 269904] Re: Screen refresh problems with nvidia on intrepid

2009-11-19 Thread Brian J. Murrell
I'm on Karmic with nvidia-glx-185 185.18.36-0ubuntu9+ppa2 and seeing
this quite a bit. I have to manually refresh windows using the title
bar to roll them up and then down again.

Is this supposed to be fixed in Karmic or is it still a known issue?
