[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476817] Re: [i855] [karmic] X freezes with intel 855GM videocard
OK, I did try just upgrading the kernel, which didn't help. I have tried 2.6.32-rc7 from the mainline kernels. However, the description of xorg-edgers worries me. This the laptop that I work on, so I rather have a non freezing X, without sound, 3D acceleration, than a non working laptop. Could I just add the ppa to my sources and update the packages? And if that fails, roll them back without any harm? Or is it more difficult? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
I hope it's not rejected. I understand the desire for the correct solution, and on the face of it you could argue that the fglrx driver should not have slow performance with the existing xorg code, however I think we should be pragmatic given the facts. Lots of people want to use the fglrx driver and want to use desktop effects. It's not nice to do driver specific hacks but looking at it another way it's a bit like having having to deal with different driver capabilities to provide useable results, something that's not unusual in the real world of software on any platform. I might be wrong but it doesn't seem that the conditional patch would have lots of negative effects on many other clients, I suppose with extensive testing the patch could show some other issues. I guess the days of manually patching your own Linux system are not over. I think I would have to get the latest source next time and apply the patch and make sure I don't make the same mistake with the package version! -- [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
Update: I backed out xorg-edgers from my machine. Non-edgers driver does indeed work without KMS, and acpi=off seems to stop the freezes. nomodeset has no apparent effect. Summary: -freezes with nomodeset -does _not_ freeze with acpi=off Problems with acpi=off: -no sound -no wifi -no power management -possible other irq-related problems (since acpi is used to configure the hardware interrupts nowadays) I tested with current distribution kernel (2.6.31-15 I think), but mainline kernel seems to behave more or less the same in this regard. Note: additional tests by Andrea could actually be of interest, since he runs the same hardware (Asus M2400N). My device has upgraded wifi (ipw2200), but that should not matter. BTW I have to concur with Andreas opinion: the fact that the current Intel drivers have such severe problems on older hardware and no developer ever seemed to deem it necessary to maintain stable support for existing machines is quite upsetting. I have currently only two options: to either downgrade to Hardy (at least until support is dropped) or to throw away perfectly good hardware. Or is there a possibility to disable the HAL detection of the graphics hardware, thus forcing the machine to vesa graphics or something? That would be at least a little help (I don't exactly need hardware acceleration on that machine). -- [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447892 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 478031] Re: Mouse buttons not registering clicks correctly
It also happens here, Dell Precision M4400 running Ubuntu 9.10 (problem was already present in 9.04). xorg version is 1:7.4+3ubuntu7. It only happens a few times a day, difficult to reproduce in xev. I am mostly working with the mouse stick and its related mouse buttons. At some point, the mouse pointer does not react on clicks from these buttons any more. What mostly helps is pressing the (left) button associated with the touchpad. There seems to be some interference between the buttons associated with the stick and those associated with the touchpad. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367941] [NEW] 3D acceleration broken on Sony Vaios with dual graphics adapters
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Some older Sony Vaios have 2 graphics adapters, usually one from Intel and one from nVidia (e.g. on the Vaio SZ650N, there is an Intel GM965 and an nVidia GeForce 8400M GS), which you can select with a hardware switch when the notebook is off: so-called STAMINA and SPEED modes. Ubuntu supports acceleration of both chips with open source (Intel) and proprietary (nvidia) drivers, but installing both means that the 3D setup gets clobbered. The current workaround is to have two xorg.conf files, one for each adapter, a couple of backed-up 3D libraries and a script that selects the right combination. The script in its current state is specific to particular nvidia driver versions (even a minor version change would break it), so is limited, but does work. Jaunty is slightly more difficult to configure than Hardy as installing nvidia-glx-180 removes /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 (needed for the Intel 965), which is not replaced by simply reinstalling the deb for libgl1-mesa- glx. Instead, you have to extract the file manually from the deb and copy it to /usr/lib. see http://doube.org/hardy-vaio.html#video and http://doube.org/jaunty- vaio.html#video for details. Do we even know that this bug is on ATI's radar? I mean I see no indication on the upstream bug report that it is being looked at http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1546 The fact that ATI hasn't responded to the bug is the most frustrating part of all this. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485338] [NEW] X11 with Intel graphics freezing repeatedly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Ever since upgrading to Karmic Koala, my X server has been crashing on a consistent basis, usually about every 2-3 days. When the crashes occur, I am not doing anything out of the ordinary - usually just using Firefox, a console, or working in Eclipse. When the freeze happens, my mouse will move around the screen fine, but I am unable to click on anything or use the keyboard. Only a complete reboot gets it working again. A few other notes: when first upgrading to Karmic Koala, my system would boot into a black screen and not allow me to login. Based upon the bug reports on this site I added i915.modeset=0 to GRUB. I followed the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze to collect debug information and have attached it to this bug. Please let me know if you need any other information. lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 9.10 Release:9.10 apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-intel: Installed: 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 Candidate: 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 Version table: *** 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 CurrentDmesg: [ 46.568012] eth0: no IPv6 routers present Date: Thu Nov 19 10:01:51 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 Lsusb: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c517 Logitech, Inc. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 429102] Re: [i945GM] Huge font size in KDE and GDM. Makes KDE unusable 8.04-9.10.
I am also hit by this bug on a HP Compaq nx7400 with Intel 945GM. Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/HugeFonts it seems to be related to bad monitors. Since the several posts and bugs about the issue, I am writing as reference the following workarounds: 1) For the giant fonts making the KDE session unusable, here it is how I solved the issue: - after booting, ctrl-alt-F6 to go to a terminal session; - login with username and password; - type sudo nano .kde/share/config/kcmfonts - set DPI to 96 by editing the relevant line into: forceFontDPI=96 - save following on screen instructions - restart the session or reboot I adapted a suggestion made in this thread http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3107128.0 since the xterm trick did not work for me. 2) For KDM, similarly to the GDM case, one has to add -dpi 96 to the line ServerCmd=/usr/bin/X in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc (all without brackets obviously, I have just put them to distinguish relevant instructions from normal text). This solve the giant fonts issue in the login screen. I have adapted an old discussion from http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3087975.0 Hope it helps. -- [i945GM] Huge font size in KDE and GDM.
