Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I tried to do ubuntu-bug AFTER the problem happened via ssh (the only possible way to interact with frozen xorg PC) but it was going for more than 6 minutes and nothing happened (just dots...). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486593] [NEW] Random X crashes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I've just (freshly) installed Ubuntu Karmic on my in-laws’ computer. I was hoping to impress them with Linux goodness, but unfortunately we are facing frequent random crashes. Half the time the X session ends without warning, returning us the GDM log-in screen. Half the time the system totally freezes, accepting no more input of any kind. I've noticed that it happens very very frequently if I open the Language Support window (I needed to install Japanese support). Please tell me how to collect data to help you in ascertaining the cause. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 452096] Re: kwin uses way too much CPU when there's no activity
Hi, I think I might have the same bug, even though I'm using an Acer Aspire 5685 WLMi Laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo and a Nvidia GeForce Go 7600. (Kernel: 2.6.31-14-generic, arch: x86_64, nvidia-driver: nvidia- glx-185) I also noticed high kwin cpu usage, then searched for it and disabled the Use Vsync option in System Settings / Look Feel / Desktop / Desktop Effects / Advanced [tab]. After this my cpu usage normally stays pretty low. Nevertheless it sometimes (every 10 minutes) happens that kwin suddenly decides to take up 100 % cpu time (of one core). I can immediately fix that problem by toggling composite with [ALT]+[SHIFT]+[F12] (switching it off and on again). I decided to investigate the problem a bit further and did an strace of kwin for a couple of seconds and also an lsof | grep kwin (see attachment). It seems as if kwin is stuck polling some file descriptor (in this fd9, which seems to be a unix socket (lsof)). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486702] [NEW] x switches to low graphics at first try to start. second works!
Public bug reported: I'm using Kubuntu Karmic x64 with a nvidia 8400m. The problem: -i start my notebook -short time after usplash disappeared, x tries to start but obviously does NOT use the driver specified in my xorg.conf. Therefore it crashes to low-graphics mode and gives me a few error and solution messages. (reconfigure your graphics etc) -when i cancel them all in about 5 seconds, i'm thrown back to startuplog and x starts again (!) after a few secs with the right settings and therefore with my nvidia-glx-185 driver! everything works fine! -when i'm too slow X won't start again on its own and i have to start it manually with startx or sudo stop kdm and sudo start kdm from tty (kdm seems to run, even after the crashed X server has closed) I don't think this is driver related, cause X does not use the driver ( i do not see the nvidia SPLASH) when it fails. Imo X is started way too early in the progress of booting so that not everything is ready to get X up. When a disk check is forced the boot progress is delayed for at least 5 minutes. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486822] [NEW] Visible Xvideo apps crash during vty switch
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Whenever I switch away from the vty showing a video with Xvideo that app crashes. If the app is minimised then the playback is uninterrupted. This behaviour is consistent across all apps that show XVideo output - vlc, totem, miro. That's why I'm, filing this bug under Xorg. I'm running karmic on a amd64 machine, xorg version is 1:.4+3ubuntu7 and the graphics driver is nvidia's 185 series blob. I did a gdb session with totem. It spawns 7 threads. When I switch to another virtual terminal an error appears and all threads exit as does totem with the exit code 01. Here's the error: The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 516 error_code 11 request_code 133 minor_code 19) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486837] [NEW] Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic
Public bug reported: I did a standard dist-upgrade from jaunty to karmic. I have a nvidia graphic card and was using the standard proprietary drivers (proposed by jockey-gtk), and with desktop effects activated. Since the upgrade, I experience freezes that seem to be related to this proprietary driver : - whenever I hibernate the PC, and start it again, the boot seems fine, but the screen stays blank after the resume - the system freezes after a few minutes watching any flash video content (with the proprietary flash) I'm using version 185.18.36-0ubuntu9 of nvidia-glx-185. Both problems are solved if I disable this proprietary driver through jockey-gtk. I ran two tests : - upgrade to version 190.42 of the drivers (by adding the ppa deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu karmic main ) - keep version 185.18.36 and disable desktop effects In both cases, the freezes are still there. The only workaround I found to avoid them was to disable the proprietary driver I found this bug : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/+bug/474917 but it does not seem to be a duplicate, as my dkms status reports : nvidia, 185.18.36, 2.6.31-14-generic, i686: installed I did not find anything relevant in /var/log about these freezes ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 416001] Re: Notification and similar dialogs are displaying corrupted after update on Karmic
I also have an old Dell latitude laptop with a 1GHz Celeron and 512 MB ram with ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY video and with a clean install of 32 bit karmic, I could not run system-monitor. It would open a window with random horizontal lines. Also the GL screensavers were very slow and the cosmos screen saver also exhibited the random horizontal lines with no visible image. glxgears showed a frame rate of 1500fps. I know it's not a benchmarking program... I created an xorg.conf and this is what is in it: Section Device Identifier ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY Driver ati BusID PCI:1:0:0 Option AGPMode 4 Option AGPSize 64 # default: 8 Option RingSize 8 Option BufferSize 2 Option EnablePageFlip True Option EnableDepthMoves True Option SWcursor off #Faster than default (on) Option AccelMethod EXA #or XAA, which is the default and may be more stable Option DynamicClocks on Option BIOSHotkeys on Option RenderAccel true # Enables hardware acceleration Option DynamicClocks on # Adds clock scalability / power management for the video card EndSection After restarting x and also after trying a reboot, I still have reliable suspend/resume, all the video artifact has vanished, system-monitor works properly GL screensavers run pretty smoothly and glxgears now shows 2400fps. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486943] [NEW] scroll wheel broken with QEMU's emulated USB tablet
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev When running Karmic as a guest under KVM/QEMU and using the -usbdevice tablet option to KVM/QEMU, the pointer positioning works correctly but the scroll wheel is ignored. The problem is a bug in the version of the xinput evdev driver in Karmic (2.2.5), which causes wheel events to be ignored from pointing devices with absolute axes. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 462393] Re: [Karmic] Sony Vaio VGN-C260E laptop freezes when external monitor is plugged in
I have the same problem with my machine (also an intel video card). One way around the freezing behaviour is to turn off compiz before you open up the display properties box. Alt+F2 and metacity --replace beforehand. Then plug in your monitor, configure, apply and run compiz --replace afterwards. Of course, it seems like this run of the intel drivers doesn't get EDID info correctly, so you might not even be able to configure the external monitor the way you want, but there it is. -- [Karmic] Sony Vaio VGN-C260E laptop freezes when external monitor is plugged in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462393 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 438000] Re: [i945gm] [karmic] X servers hangs when settings up dual monitor config
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 419328 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419328 I am having the same issue with a Dell Mini 10 (Model 1011), Atom N230 and GMA 945. I successfully, and without any effort, had Compiz enabled while driving both the LVDS at 1024x576 and the VGA at 1024x768 right of LVDS in 9.04. Today I upgraded to 9.10 via update manager and now have this same issue. Combined width is 2048 which is the max texture size (width) for the 945 chipset. This may not be a bug, but is most definitely a regression because I have lost functionality over a previous version. As mentioned in the other bug, success can be had by arranging the screens vertically: 1. Switch to Metacity (Desktop Effects set to None) 2. Attach external monitor 3. Open Display Settings 4. Arrange external Below LVDS 5. Set proper screen size for the VGA (in my case it's actually 1280x1024) 6. Turn Compiz back on (Desktop Effects set to Extra) This arrangement nets a virtual resolution of 1280 x 1792 which falls neatly inside of the accelerated buffer limit of 2048x2048 on the 945. The problem is, as mentioned, this is a regression from 9.04 (which did let me arrange them side by side) and is spatially difficult to maintain as I don't rest my netbook on top of my monitor as the arrangement seems to make me want to feel. -- [i945gm] [karmic] X servers hangs when settings up dual monitor config https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438000 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
