[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 506951] Re: x locks when starting
No, it is not possible to upgrade only a small part of Karmic. It's fine if you want to stay on Karmic. This kind of breakage sometimes happens in the development version of Ubuntu and if you cannot risk that it might stop working after an upgrade, it is better not to run it. On my laptop I have two partitions. One with Jaunty that I have set up well a long time ago that I use for work, and one with Lucid that I use at home and catch bugs as they appear. Because of this problem my Lucid didn't work for a day or two, but I still could use the computer. -- x locks when starting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/506951 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Terry, Point 1 about backing up all your data and settings to external drive is excellent advice otherwise you will lose all the data on the Ubuntu side unless you follow a fairly simple procedure that no-one seems to know about except me i am late for work. So backup your entire /home to external drive or onto another machine to backup everything. Please ask this as a new question. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used
Changed to 16bpp on 64MB ATI card, less than max. resolution, and problem still exists. I opened a terminal and ran 'xwininfo', which reported 'Depth: 24', so we know the color depth was set to 24 bpp. I also ran 'lspci' which reported I am not running in the highest resolution, so there should be extra video memory. NOTE: My card has 64MB, see the first screen in the attached image for graphics details and notify-osd problem. I restarted the system in single-user mode and ran 'Xorg -configure' then edited /root/xorg.conf.new to configure only the video information. Adding 'DefaultDepth 16' was necessary to force 16bpp mode. 'xwininfo' reported 'Depth: 16', and the problem still exists. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505820] Re: gnome-power-manager reports a broken display server after random screen blanking
Hibernation appears to be irrelevant; it happened again to me on a clean boot. Additionally, there was a longer wait before the screen unblanked this time (until I moved the mouse; it's probable that it lasts until either any input, or anything that would dismiss a screensaver/unblank a screen). As with the last time it happened, and with cheoppy's report, there's nothing at all relevant in any of the logs I checked, just the screen blanking and unblanking, and the notification area warning of a bug. -- gnome-power-manager reports a broken display server after random screen blanking https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/505820 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503674] Re: [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later
Hello Harel, perhaps you can update the driver using the third-party Xorg »edgers« driver repository. It’s a so-called PPA (personal package archive). I guess the Openchrome driver in there does not depend on a more recent Xorg, so install without dependency error. I can’t check. But you’ll see if it installs. To add the additional »Software Source« for »Xorg Edgers / drivers only« use this command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/drivers-only And then run a package update in the command line: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-openchrome Before you enter »Yes« you should look at what it proposes to install. You want to pull in the newer OpenChrome driver. It should only install that one package and maybe some necessary dependency. Afterwards you can disable this PPA source in the »Software Sources« dialog. Then reboot without an xorg.conf at /etc/X11/cong.conf. This is to test if it magically recognizes your monitor again. If that didn’t work then the newer driver didn’t help and you should use the manual config using Nelsson’s xorg.conf. Perhaps the option that Bartosz mentioned helps. I don’t know this driver and its options. -- [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

@Eduard Two things are not correct: 1) you should remove this file: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-local.conf This is what prevents you from using the driver, as it blacklists the module that you need to use. After removing the file and rebooting your system, the driver should work. 2) This is not related to the problem that you mentioned but the error with nvidia-common should be fixed by an upgrade to version 0.2.17 of nvidia-common -- [lucid] nvidia-glx can't work with new xorg 7.5 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/494166 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507618] [NEW] xserver-xorg-video-radeon has insufficient (even missing) dependency on libdrm-radeon1
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati During a partial upgrade from karmic to lucid, I wanted to restart X after updating the X packages but it didn't come back. Looking at the gdm log the error could be found pretty fast: /usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so: undefined symbol: radeon_cs_create At this point xserver-xorg-video-radeon was already updated to 1:6.12.99+git20091125.0061c4db-0ubuntu2 (lucid) while libdrm-radeon1 was still at 2.4.14-1ubuntu1 (karmic). Updating libdrm-radeon1 to 2.4.17-0ubuntu1 (lucid) fixed it and my X started again. I looked then at the dependencies of xserver-xorg-video-radeon I saw that it's missing a dependency on libdrm-radeon1 at all: Depends: libc6 (= 2.2.5), libpciaccess0, xserver-xorg-core (= 2:1.6.99.900) Looking further at the needed libraries of /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so: $ objdump -x /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so | grep NEEDED NEEDED libpixman-1.so.0 NEEDED libdrm_radeon.so.1 NEEDED libdrm.so.2 NEEDED libpciaccess.so.0 NEEDED libc.so.6 other needed libraries are missing in Depends too. While at least libpixman-1-0 and libdrm2 are pulled in through xserver-xorg-core depending on them (still are direct dependency would be better than a indirect one), libdrm-radeon1 is only pulled in through a recommendation: $ aptitude why xserver-xorg-video-radeon libdrm-radeon1 i xserver-xorg-video-radeon Dependsxserver-xorg-core (= 2:1.6.99.900) i A xserver-xorg-core Recommends libgl1-mesa-dri (= 7.1~rc1) i libgl1-mesa-dri Dependslibdrm-radeon1 (= 2.4.12) But this doesn't assure that libdrm-radeon1 is installed at all and even in the correct version needed by xserver-xorg-video-radeon. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- xserver-xorg-video-radeon has insufficient (even missing) dependency on libdrm-radeon1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507618 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 327805] [NEW] Keyboard layout switching hotkey becomes disabled after monitor power-save
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I have Both Shift keys together change layout checked in System Preferences Keyboard Layouts Other Options Layout switching, but it seems that every time the monitor goes into power-save mode, this shortcut no longer works (but simply visiting those Preferences again restores everything to normal). (This may or may not be related to a slightly less annoying problem, which is that while the monitor is in power-save mode, it seems to take a few seconds after the first keystroke for my monitor to wake up and my system to actually register the keystrokes. E.g., hitting Num Lock won't actually toggle the indicator light for about 5 seconds.) I would guess that this was filed under the wrong package and should have been xorg. Can you try this in a Live CD of Lucid please? If this is a problem there please run apport-collect 327805 and allow it to pull in all the information. You may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your bug report. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507598] Re: [GM45] serious X problem with aspire 5738z karmic
Sorry to close another bug report on you, but there are a few problems with your report: - You report multiple problems in one bug report (we will only focus on one per bug report) - You need to clearly state the exact problem in the title - You need to describe the problem in detail in the bug report. - We currently focus on fixing bug in the development release of Ubuntu (Lucid, 10.04). Only high-impact bugs in Karmic will get any attention at this point in time, and this doesn't seem to be one. You are welcome to test the development verison and report the bugs there (but use the above guidelines and the ones in the links in bug 437298) Based on this, I think it is best to close this bug report. This is not to say that you don't have real problems, only that your report doesn't help us solve them for the next release. We currently have far more bug reports in xserver-xorg-video-intel than we can handle, so I thought it was better to close this report that leave it ignored for a long time before it's closed. The Invalid status simply mean that we have closed the report for another reason than fixing the bug. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- [GM45] serious X problem with aspire 5738z karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507598 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Thank you for reporting this bug in the development version of Ubuntu. Could you test some newer kernels for me so that we can decide if there is a fix upstream that we can pull, or it has to be fixed there as well? Information about testing mainline kernels can be found at [1]. The two kernels that I would like you to test are v2.6.33-rc4 and the newest drm-intel-next. If the problem is still present with those kernels we will collect some more information and submit a bug report to the intel developers. If it is fixed with one of the kernels, we will try and identify the fix and see if it can be pulled into Lucid. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399745] [NEW] desktop missing a part of screen
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop using Wubi from Windows XP. The PC is a HP Compaq nw8440 in a docking station with an external monitor connected (Philips 240BW , 24 1920x1200) On first boot I updated suing the Update Manager. Then on second boot I changed the Dsiplay settings from: - same screen mirrored on both monitors (1680x1050) to - non mirrored, 1920x1200 on Philips and 1680x1050 on the laptops monitor Result: Part of the Philips screen (bottom and roght) is black. That is, the desktop background picture does not cover it. Furthermore if any window is dragged to that part and moved back, traces of it are left there (see screenshot). The entire laptop monitor is the same: black, windows leave traces. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399745] Re: desktop missing a part of screen
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in xserver-xorg-video-ati. When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs. ** Package changed: ubuntu = xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) -- desktop missing a part of screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/399745 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503674] Re: [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later
Thank you everyone including Tobias, Nelsson, and Bartosz! !Before getting to Tobias' message I tried two experiments and apparently the second one worked! Remember I am completely unfamiliar with xconf and chrome etc, so I merely experimented blindly. Here is what I did: The experiment was only half blind since I had, first, Nelsson's post #13 with his xorg.conf and second, I had the warning from him that vertRefresh might not work. However I thirdly knew that I had an error message (as poreted in my message #11 above) when I tried to use HorizSync 30.0-100.0 per Bartosz's earlier suggestion, and I saw that Nelsson's xorg.conf had that line..so I decided to try four experiments: 1) Try Nelsson's file with both the HorizSync line and the VertRefresh lines both BOTH commented out (I used google to learn that # works here as it does in some other areas) (begin) Section Device Identifier Configured Video Device Driver openchrome EndSection Section Monitor Identifier Configured Monitor # HorizSync 30.0-100.0 # VertRefresh 50-60 EndSection Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Monitor Configured Monitor Device Configured Video Device EndSection (end) 2) Try Nelsson's file with only VertRefresh line commented out, but with HorizSync left in (begin paste) Section Device Identifier Configured Video Device Driver openchrome EndSection Section Monitor Identifier Configured Monitor HorizSync 30.0-100.0 # VertRefresh 50-60 EndSection Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Monitor Configured Monitor Device Configured Video Device EndSection (end paste) I was worried about this because I had the earlier error (see post #11) when I left the HorizSync still there..but this seemed to work, so I did not try the other two experiements, which would have been 3) Leave in VertRefresh but comment-out the HorizSync and 4) leave in both. Details of what happened when I used 2) and then Restarted my computer: I did see something that (unless I was not paying enough attention in the past) was new, during the computer's lines of self-talk while rebooting, and it was something like: Filesystem check in progress (and something about his ESC to stop) and some line with /(/dev/[other words here...] I am pretty sure it was like that a / then a ( and then / and then dev/ Then I got a very very very small display so I knew something changed..I was able to log in and used System--preferences---Display and found out it was set to 1680 by 1200 My monitor's official limit is 1024 by 768 (which is still much better than the 800x600 I have been stuck with) and fortunately that WAS available in the pulldown menu (unlike before this (fix?)) so I chose that and said YES when it asked me whether to keep this confirguration Then I re-started the computer again and looks like I am at 1024x768 still...good! Given that I am a newbie, and given that my time is limited (with my fulltime work duties now starting again in a week) and given that it took so many hours before (see 6 pages at http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1361193page=6 ) I am tempted to just STAY WITH THIS and not try to change anything else unless there is a reason why there is a problem with what I have now? What do you experienced folks think? And my second question: Should I worry about that filesystem check in progress self-talk by my computer that first time I rebooted after changing the xorg.conf file? That's my last pragmatic question for now :-) My third and last question for now is: will this thread on launchpad automatically alert the people behind the next version of Ubuntu to try to make this automatic so no one will be in my shoes again? (reminder-- Dapper Drake understood my monitor perfectly and had no problems showing the right 1024x768 display...but Heron and Koala both kept me in 800x600 as my higher allowed option, until this, I hope, final fix) -- [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507765] [NEW] Please build libdrm-intel for ports architectures
Public bug reported: Please enable libdrm-intel for ports architectures. It's a build- dependency of plymouth, so contributes to a plymouth FTBFS. Fedora makes available libdrm-2.4.6-6.fc11.ppc.rpm, demonstrating that this wouldn't be a change unique to Ubuntu. While it is unlikely that anyone has hardware with sparc/powerpc/armel/ia64 processors and the necessary graphics drivers to require this package, the package builds successfully and may even work. If anyone happens to have the hardware necessary to report a bug, then it demonstrates that the package should have been built. If nobody has the hardware, then it doesn't matter if it works. I believe this to be a less-invasive solution than attempting to special-case plymouth's code to conditionally build the intel bits only for linux-i386, linux-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, and kfreebsd-amd64. ** Affects: libdrm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Please build libdrm-intel for ports architectures https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libdrm in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507765] Re: Please build libdrm-intel for ports architectures
I've prepared a debdiff implementing the requested changes, as well as cleaning up the libdrm-dev dependency on libnouveau for non-linux ports (fairly meaningless in the context of Ubuntu, but matches the lines in debian/rules). I've tested builds in lucid for both amd64 and powerpc, and the results seem sane (although I obviously have no way to test if the libdrm-intel code actually works on powerpc rather than just being present as a library and headers). ** Attachment added: Debdiff implementing requested changes http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37910250/libdrm_2.4.17-0ubuntu2.debdiff -- Please build libdrm-intel for ports architectures https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libdrm in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
