[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 519801] Re: X server freezes randomly

2010-02-11 Thread broger557
Left memtest running for 8 hrs - no error.

Lucid was working ok for 2hrs, but then I didn't run the usual workload
(chromium, netbeans)

Might I add januty was running fine for weeks.
After upgrade to karmic (not a clean install) stuff started to break.
First rhytmbox started to freeze, now X.

btw. myRage segfaults are in the program I'm trying to debug :)

2010-02-11 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
What packages were upgraded and which one did you keep? I'm not sure
about how the libdrm source package is split into binary packages, but
I would think that the patch only would affect libdrm-intel1.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 520344] [NEW] Two finger scrolling on Acer aspire 1410 (1080T) does not work

2010-02-11 Thread Carlos Aguilar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Ubuntu release: 9.10
Package version: 1.1.2-1ubuntu7
Expected behavior:
Set two finger scrolling in mouse properties would work
What happened instead:
Two finger scrolling only works with edge scrolling

This bug is the same than bugs #44 and #476866 but on different
hardware.

The touchpad is definitely multi-touch capable as windows 7 behavior
shows. The workarounds in the related bugs are multi-touch emulation and
therefore not acceptable.

This affects many different computers and seems to indicate that a
fundamental bug in the driver impacts on all of us.

Thanks if you show some interest for this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 422224] Re: two-finger scrolling does not work on Acer AO531h

2010-02-11 Thread Carlos Aguilar
I have filed a separated bug for my aspire 1410 (Bug #520344), but it
seems to me that the same issue is affecting all of us.

As Alberto Milone set this bug to triaged and low importance after
suggesting that the bug was due to a non-multitouch capability and
people are saying that their touchpads are multi-touch capable I change
the status and importance until this is taken into account.

Sorry for this if I am wrong.

2010-02-11 Thread Irihapeti
The upgraded packages were libdrm-intel1, libdrm-nouveau1, libdrm-
radeon1, and libdrm2. I removed - downgraded, rather - the first three
and kept libdrm2. I figure that -nouveau1 and -radeon1 wouldn't be doing
anything on an intel system and that the problem was most likely to be
with -intel1.

Still no lockups so far.

But any way here's what is happening after the update:
1- No changes on the problem.
2- Some times it freeze at login screen.
3- Some times it freeze when running gksu nautilus.
4- Every time I run Firefox, change address or type anything in search or just
by opening it after few seconds it Freezes the whole system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 410264] Re: Translations: .pot template files missing, existing .po files won't be used

2010-02-11 Thread David Planella
** Description changed:

When scanning the import queue in Launchpad Rosetta for issues that need
manual intervention, I found the following issue with the mesa package
which prevents a smooth import into Launchpad Rosetta and causes the
Ubuntu Translation Coordinators to manually adjust or remove .po files.

In the /obj-i686-linux-gnulp/* directories (and even for all the other
architectures) the .pot template files are missing. Therefore corresponding .po
files cannot be imported into Rosetta and won't appear in the language-packs.
If the translations are not used anyways, please consider to remove all the
directories containing .po files.
If the translations should be used, please fix the build script to actually
build the .pot file.

There are lots of directories in those files, I'm not reporting them all
  here, but they usually are:

  /src/
  /obj-ARCH-linux-gnu/
  /obj-ARCH-linux-gnulp/

- For general guidelines how to ensure smooth imports into Launchpad Rosetta,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 255008] Re: Up arrow key mapped to Print [screen]

2010-02-11 Thread Friedrich Strohmaier
I've marked Bug #512622, filed myself, as duplcate of this bug. It is
describing the wiredness mentioned in Bug #254939 which I also marked
as duplcate. I'm aware it does so in a confusing manner.

Lucid Lynx is also affected.

In the essence my search which also led me here, ends up to following:

Introducing evdev managing keybords resulted in changing keymapping of
the non ascii keys (guess!) in a non reasonable way. Did all that
keyboards out there change the same? ;o))

At least this is incompatible to xmodmapfiles created for xfree86 driven
keyboards.

from my point of view solution could be:

most elegant:
- make evdev output reasonble (i.e xfree86/xmodmap compatible, for all that
keyboards out there already are ;o)) )

if evdev output is reasonable in any way (I don't believe):
- make xmodmap detect evdev driven keyboard and handle apropriately

or worse:
- kick xmodmap to avoid confusion

grml.org team (recent debian testing) solved that problem by managing
the keybord by xfree86 and all the rest by evdev (don't know how, but it
works as expected with my old xmodmap files)

Worst case in my opinion is to kick xmodmap, because we will loose
xkeycaps - a great tool to manage complexity of keybord issues in a
quit easy and portable manner.

I'm not really an expert, so maybe I'm lost completely with this.

Other conclusions ending in a working solution for this pain always
apreciated. :o))

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 520519] [NEW] Expose Dashboard keys don't work on Apple MacBook / MacBook Pro

2010-02-11 Thread Mario Schwalbe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

X.org keyboard database in Ubuntu Karmic doesn't provide keycode
mappings nor keysyms for Apples Expose Dashboard keys (F3/F4) although
the Linux kernel's evdev layer reports correct keycodes. The attached
patch adds the required keycode definitions to
/usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev as well as symbols to
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet (evdev section). Those symbols finally
can be used to configure compiz.

Note: I assigned the symbols XF86LaunchA and XF86LaunchB due to a lack
of better alternatives.

This is package version:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475429] Re: [i945] Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller Freezes when compiz enabled

2010-02-11 Thread takashi torigoe
I don't use Lucid for now. So I build patched libdrm for my karmic.
I still got freeze, but the problem (below) might be fixed I think.
In Ubuntu 9.04 the screen lock, but back when the mouse is moved.

I tried to find out the cause of freeze.
First, I run the euphoria as ' strace /usr/lib/xscreensaver/euphoria --badmath
2./logd 1logd2'
Next, 'killall euphoria' after freeze.

logd is below.
ioctl(4, 0xc0086457, 0xbfeade88)= 0
ioctl(4, 0x4020645d, 0xbfeade80)= 0
ioctl(4, 0xc0086457, 0xbfeade88)= 0
ioctl(4, 0x4020645d, 0xbfeae030)= 0

ioctl(4, 0x40286454, 0xbfeae058)= 0
ioctl(4, 0xc0086457, 0xbfeae008)= 0
ioctl(4, 0x400c645f, 0xbfeadfc4)= 0
ioctl(4, 0x4020645c, 0xbfe9e000)= 0
--- SIGTERM (Terminated) @ 0 (0) ---

ioctl 0x4020645c is executed before killed.
ioctl 0x4020645c is DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_PREAD.
ioctl DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_PREAD is called by drm_intel_gem_bo_get_subdata in
intel_bufmgr_gem.c:856.
I wrote check code to find out that the freeze occred in
DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_PREAD.

check code:(freeze time count)
  struct timeval tv,tv2;
  long lusec;
  gettimeofday( tv, NULL );
  ret = ioctl (bufmgr_gem-fd, DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_PREAD, pread);
  gettimeofday( tv2, NULL );
  lusec = (tv2.tv_sec - tv.tv_sec)*100L-tv.tv_usec+tv2.tv_usec;
  printf(%ld¥n, lusec);

log by printf is below.
234
230
255
252
236
251
82744282
256
246
238

The result indicates that, euphoria is freezed (82 sec) until killed.
It seemed that the freeze is caused by DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_PREAD.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 518938] Re: black screen on Intel HM55 - during boot and Xorg

2010-02-11 Thread Eric Boesch
When swapping the kernel out, how do you get to see a shell prompt from
which to run dpkg in the first place? Is it necessary to build a custom
boot disk as described at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization , or am I
overlooking an easy answer to this?

(Without boot disk customization, the 9.10 alternate installer
succeeded, and upon reboot GRUB ran successfully, but booting even in
recovery mode yielded the old blank screen.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 520578] [NEW] X resets or hangs after plugging/unplugging USB keyboard several times

2010-02-11 Thread Colin King
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Running with lucid amd64 with latest updates (as of 11/02/2010), I've
noticed in the past few days that X either restarts or locks up after
I've plugged/unplugged a USB keyboard several times.

Looking at dmesg there is no sign of segfaulting (X restarting case) or
the machine hanging (when X locks up) since I can ssh it the machine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 520580] [NEW] KMS fails when switching user

2010-02-11 Thread Jeffrey Baker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

In Lucid, when the machine is locked and someone tries to switch user,
the display crashes and the user is left at VT7 with a blinking cursor
and system messages shown. Oddly there is also a working mouse pointer.
The machine does not crash, and restarting gdm from another VT restores
the display.

The Xorg log indicates that we Failed to become the DRM master and
Kernel modesetting setup failed. See Xorg.1.log attached.

This is actually the nastiest bug in current karmic for me. When you
mouse scroll in website with java content (happens often for with these:
  http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1067810), then X crashes
and everything goes back to gdm screen. It happens mostly when I'm down
in the page and mouse scroll up back into the direction of the java
- content.
+ content. I have an Intel video card.

There are some similar bugs like bug 478338, but that one is not exactly
the same, so I filed a new one.
+
+ We think this might be related to the window manager since awesome wm
+ does not have these problems. We hope to get some feedback from devs at
+ some point since this is a really nasty bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 520585] [NEW] USB2VGA2 device not autodetected at boot

2010-02-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sisusb

[Problem]
The USB2VGA2 device from StarTech.com works when manually configured but does
not automatically detect when X boots.

[Configuration]
Manual configuration requires adding a section like this in xorg.conf:

Section Device
Identifier SiS USB2VGA
VendorName SiS # Value does not matter
BoardName SiS # Value does not matter

Driver sisusb

# BusID: Does not matter if you have only one USB2VGA dongle.
# If you have more than one, you can specify the device node
# name or the device number here.
#BusID USB:/dev/sisusbvga0

EndSection

Section Screen
Identifier screen1
Device SiS USB2VGA
MonitorGeneric
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection Display
Depth 16
Modes 1600x1200 1024x768 800x600 640x480
EndSubSection
SubSection Display
Depth 8
Modes 1600x1200 1024x768 800x600 640x480
EndSubSection
SubSection Display
Depth 24
Modes 1600x1200 1024x768 800x600 640x480
EndSubSection
EndSection

The challenge is, the X.org video device autodetection operates against
devices attached to the PCI Bus, but this connects to the USB bus. So
it's not as trivial as adding some pciids to the xserver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 520585] Re: USB2VGA2 device not autodetected at boot

2010-02-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
Unfortunately, there seems to not be an active upstream for this driver.
The driver was developed by Thomas Winischhofer, but it doesn't look
like it's been touched since 2005.

There are no other bug reports at launchpad on the sisusb driver, and
only one (from 2005) at bugs.freedesktop.org. This definitely feels
like a really corner case hardware.

OTOH, this might be of interest in the context that now with DisplayLink
we have other video devices which need detected on the USB bus, and if
that is sorted out, this device could piggyback on that effort.

@jdstrand can you pls turn off kms and try this kernel ? In Jaunty there
was no radeon KMS suppport, so lets see if my small set of kernel patch
backports work, then you will .

It will not be possible to do a complete back port of drm at this point,
I did a backport and I am building a kernel now, and it amounts to 172
patches.

Looking through the sisusb source code, I see it has the voodoo in it to
detect stuff on the USB bus, in sisusb_driver.c, function
SiSUSBFindUSBDongle(). Something akin to this would need ported to
xserver's driver selection logic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455902] Re: X server doesn't launch everytime. intel 845

2010-02-11 Thread Charlie Kravetz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Since the versions of xserver-xorg are different in your
report, it is not a good comparison other than we know the older version
xserver-org worked for you. Please run the command 'apport-collect
455902' which will attach necessary information for debugging this as an
Xorg problem.

Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2010-02-11 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Andrea, 2.6.31 is the Karmic kernel. The libdrm package could hopefully
fix (some of) the remaining freeze bugs in Lucid, but I don't have much
hope for Karmic.

Actually, I would recommend people who experience frequent freezes on
Karmic to upgrade to Lucid now. Yes, it is a development version and as
such may break suddenly, but it may freeze less and it may help us to
know which freeze problems still remain there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 508456] Re: Lucid frequently crashes while starting gdm on Averatec 3280

2010-02-11 Thread Erik
Somehow installing compiz solved the weird startup behaviour.
I know, this is not a real solution, but I guess compiz changed the startup
order in a way.

I did not yet test removing compiz again, though, to see if the problem
is reproducable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 467245] Re: Incorrect German translation of Ctrl+Alt+Backspace in xkeyboard-config in 9.10

2010-02-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
This appears to be fixed already in the version we have in Lucid. The
translation upstream selected was:

#: ../rules/base.xml.in.h:164
msgid Control + Alt + Backspace
msgstr Strg + Alt + Löschtaste

This is not a serious enough issue to warrant an SRU to karmic so guess
we can consider this issue resolved now.

 order in a way.

I did not yet test removing compiz again, though, to see if the problem
 is reproducable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 517550] Re: failsafe X doesn't have an option to restart X with new configuration

2010-02-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
Yeah it's a standard dialog, implemented using zenity. I don't think
the button can be easily removed, but it could be directed to do
something more useful if you'd like.

The code is in /etc/gdm/failsafe* if you care to do some hacking. I'm
very appreciative of patches.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 520721] [NEW] [LUCID] Xorg freeze pressing ENTER

2010-02-11 Thread Alessandro Rinaldi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 2 (all packages upgraded to latest version) with
a nVidia GT220.
It all works, but it has a really annoying problem.
I can login and do everything, but when I press the ENTER key, the system
totally hangs. No matter which window has the focus, the system will hang and I
do nothing, also can't go to a terminal by CTRL+ALT+Fn.
However, it is still reachable by SSH (i did the bug report from there when it
was just crashed) and if I type sudo restart gdm gdm restarts and ENTER works
as it should.

2010-02-11 Thread Surbhi Palande
Bryan Quigley, Karmic has now reached its stable version and we shall only
backport patches which fix a regression, data loss or are security fixes. You
can find more information on this at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates.
Since, backporting this patch to karmic needs large changes, this change will
not be seen in karmic.

Suggestion - - are there one or more useful commands that we can enter
on a terminal screen and redirect output to a file??

Wonder if there are certain data that we can collect for your
evaluation. Perhaps we can send the most relevant data to you and
simplify your review.

Am running U-9.10 very happily on an old Dell portable and on n old
Compaq desktop. Sadly, 9.10 locks up a newer Compaq desktop as
previously reported. That machine is back to U-9.04.

soon as I do something everythings hangs again and bye bye to lucid

Tomorrow I'll attach output from RenderAccel=off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 30969] Re: monitor suspends regardless of gnome-power-manager timeouts

2010-02-11 Thread bpan123
I have this problem too.
Someone (on ubuntu forum) suggested adding [xset s off] (to /sys/prefs/startup)
which has stopped the monitor power-down, but g-s-s still doesn't enable the
screensaver.
g-p-m appears to be running.

- Atom230 (Intel D945GCLF) 1GB, WD1600BEVSRTL (160GB 2.5), atheros 5k
compatible wireless PCI card), HP DVD-RAM.
- Only variant is that monitor is attached through a KVM switch. No problems
with Keyboard and Mouse...

This was a clean install with all hardware attached at startup.
Still wondering what causes this... can't be so difficult to reproduce?
